At the March General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, women from each legislative district were recognized by their respective legislator for their contributions to their community and presented with a proclamation. Rose Mangogna, a longtime volunteer and resident of Kings Park, was selected by Legislator Rob Trotta as the 2017 Woman of Distinction for the 13th Legislative District. “Rose is the consummate volunteer and is passionate about her town and its residents,” said Legislator Trotta. Rose established three new athletic teams for St. Joseph’s CYO in Kings Park, where she continues to coach its Volleyball team. In 2009, she initiated the Track & Field team and is a former coach. She also implemented the TOP Soccer program for children with disabilities. In addition, she is on the committee for St. Joseph’s Family Day Picnic. For more than 10 years, Rose has been involved with the Kings Park Soccer Club, where she is a coach and has been its president for the past seven years. The Long Island Junior Soccer League named Rose its Volunteer of the Year for 2015 in recognition of her outstanding service to the youth of Kings Park and for making a positive difference in their lives. Rose is very active with Cub Scout Pack 75 and Boy Scout Troop 75. She is a committee member for

preserve and beautify the park. She helps to organize the park’s Sunset Run and its annual Turkey Trot/ Walk for the Park. Rose also co-chairs the annual Kings Park Veterans Day Parade and is responsible for inviting the parade participants and dignitaries, ordering the wreaths, selecting the keynote speaker and publicizing the event. Legislator Trotta added, “Rose is dedicated to enhancing the lives of others and has demonstrated a strong work ethic in all that she does.”

Housed underground in an authentic 1936 subway station, the museum includes twenty vintage subway and elevated train cars dating back to 1907. The Scouts are all working towards earning their Railroading Merit Badges, and this tour/visit was part of the requirements of the merit badge. After touring the Museum, the group had lunch (which they had “brown bagged”) at the base of the Manhattan Bridge. From there, they walked across the Brooklyn

Bridge. The entire eightmile hike took the group across the 134-yearold bridge, through Manhattan’s City Hall Park, past St. Paul’s Church and past the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan, up the Hudson River Greenway, and then along the famous High Line Walkway to Penn Station. Said Boy Scout Kyle Adams, “The MTA Museum was very interesting. Not only learning about how they built overhead subway lines, and then tunnels, but also how they ran the system through blackouts and Hurricane Sandy. It was also a great experience walking across such an old and busy bridge.”

Math students at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District put their academic skills to the test when they participated in a math-themed breakout challenge on April 7th. Themed after “Night at the Museum,” students were charged with escaping

the Nesaquake library before the T-Rex came to life. Students in Tina Bosi’s Math 8 and algebra classes divided into four different teams to complete the challenge. The teams had to unlock six different locks featuring puzzles designed by Ms. Bosi. The math students

International Competition used their knowledge of graph functions, points of intersection, multiples and negative exponents in an attempt to unlock each puzzle. Clues were hidden throughout the library and each team was given two hint cards throughout the timed challenge.

Three Commack High students, Charity Russell, Abbigayle Cuomo, and Raphael Iskra, will be representing the Commack community on the world stage in Los Angeles, California at the International Science and Engineering Fair during the week of May 14th. Charity took 1st Place in Animal Sciences for her project, “Manipulation Odor Driven Behavior in Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaster).” Her research involved exposing genetically modified fruit flies to various light and odor conditions, with possible human applications. Charity also

won the US Air Force Award at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF). Abbigayle’s “A Study in Westward Recurving Tropical Cyclone Tracks in the Atlantic” earned 1st Place in Environmental and Earth Sciences. Westward recurving storms in the Atlantic Ocean, such as Hurricane Sandy, have damaging consequences, and Abby studied storm tracks with an eye towards improving forecasting. Abby also won a Ying Scholar Award, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Award, an Association for American Geoscientists Award, and an American Meteorological Society Award at LISEF. Raphael studied “The Effects of Nitazoxanide on Chaperone/Usher Pathway Assembled Virulence Factors in Gram-negative Bacteria,” and won 1st

Place in Microbiology. Raphael investigated transport across the outer bacteria cell membrane. In addition to his first place title, Raphael also earned a US Air Force Award at LISEF, and a Ying Scholar Award. “Our science research program continues to excel,” stated Dr. Alison Offerman Celentano, Director of Science. “Our teachers provide opportunities for students to follow their passions through original research, where they learn 21st century skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. We are so proud of Charity, Abby and Raphael for the prestigious invitation to compete at ISEF in California with students all over the world and know they will represent Commack with dignity and poise.”

The Best Buddies Club presented a Disability Awareness Program for the 9th grade classes in recognition of Human Rights Week at Hauppauge High School. The presentation was designed to help the freshman class understand some of the challenges people with disabilities face in their everyday lives, such as reading, writing, buttoning a shirt and beyond. The Club members discussed acceptance

and friendships among all people and addressed such questions with the audience as: “What would the world be like if there was acceptance of all people? What would Hauppauge be like?” They also spoke about the global Best Buddies Campaign slogan: “SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD.” The freshman students were asked to sign a banner and take a pledge to stop using the “R” word and replace it with “RESPECT.”

Working Together

At St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District, a group of fifth-grade students have been busy at work in an effort to give back to their community. The EPIC Club, a community service and leadership club, meets weekly to work on projects and activities for the betterment of their local community. They are currently working on painting flower pots for a

local nursing home and a macaroni and cheese drive for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. Other initiatives this school year include food drives for the Smithtown Food Pantry, volunteering at the Project Hope soup kitchen in Greenlawn and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood. The club has also worked on Valentine’s for Vets and a project called

Caitlyn’s Smiles, making craft kits for children in local hospitals. The EPIC Club doesn’t forget about their animal friends either, making bird seed feeders for the local nursing home, organizing a food drive for Tuff Tails (animal fostering program) and working with Savea-Pet, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind and the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Club members – with and without disabilities – also spoke about their personal experiences, the impact the Best Buddies Club has had on them and how it touches the lives of their fellow peers. “It was an amazing experience to have this open forum to discuss these important topics and to raise awareness of and empathy for the challenges that people with disabilities face in their lives,” described Best Buddies Club Adviser Angela McElroy-Braun. Best Buddies is an international non-profit organization that fosters friendships between people with and without disabilities. Power Breakfast Legislator Kennedy held her third annual Suffolk County Woman’s Power Breakfast today, hosted at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. Featuring elected officials, community leaders and business leaders, the breakfast was an opportunity for local women to meet and discuss challenges facing women in the private and public sector today, as well as resources that can help them overcome these challenges. While networking was the primary goal of the event, the breakfast also featured a panel of elected officials that included Islip

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright, Islip Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, Babylon Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Huntington Receiver of Taxes Esther Bivona, Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascal, and Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers Chair Gina Coletti. The panel discussed their experiences as women in public service and gave advice and resources for women seeking to overcome adversity. Afterwards, Legislator Kennedy met with the other attendees, discussing their individual experiences

and potential solutions. At the conclusion of the breakfast, Legislator Kennedy thanked all who attended and wished them success in their future endeavors. “I’d like to thank each and every one of you for making this breakfast a success,” Legislator Kennedy stated, “but also for fighting the good fight every day, whether it be as a women against adversity, or in support of women fighting against adversity.” She concluded by hoping that their experiences would help inspire other women in Suffolk County.
