( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling

Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. Smithtown Artist Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of Smithtown artist Ivy Michelle Berg will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown, April 15 - June 15, 2019. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular bank hours. Smithtown’s Ivy Michelle Berg considers herself not an artist, but a “scientist who paints.” She received a bachelor degree in Neuroscience from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst then went on to a position as a science fact-checker for Microsoft in Redmond, WA, and a 5-year engagement as an exhibits interpreter at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center before. In the late 1990’s art found its way front and center she began creating watercolor portraits of her favorite musicians, most notably, Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette, both of whom have portraits of Ivy’s in their private collections. Ivy returned to Long Island and accepted a teaching position at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing
Arts, the very same camp she’d attended as a child. Over the years, she’s taught in both private and large group formats to students of all ages and abilities, ever enjoying the challenge of understanding each student’s unique learning style and how to best customize lessons. To this day, Ivy remains a life scientist at her core, drawing her primary inspiration from the natural world, especially from wildlife. She hopes that by bringing not just images of animals into her classroom, but also interesting facts and lessons about the importance of environmental awareness and ecological health, she will impart this passion to future generations. Ivy feels the world is far too beautiful a place to ignore the inspiration it offers up freely. And so, she continues to create... “My work is inspired by a life-long love affair with the natural world. I was that kid who lifted rocks and rotted logs, eager to behold the living treasures underneath, breathed wildlife documentaries, and devoured each new issue of Ranger Rick! I
am fascinated by life on our beautiful planet in all its forms. Painting enables me to connect more deeply with this life, understanding its intricacies, its workings, and its most detailed and unique structures. I’ve painted creatures as small as mosquitoes and as large as elephants. Their eyes fascinate me most, sometimes complex alien mosaics... often pools so deeply human that it’s hard to imagine we’re different from them at all. Art is reflection, and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to reflect a world so rich in color, texture and diversity. Each painting enables me to learn more about the beings I love and to share my discoveries with those around me. Recognizing Your Life Cycles You may think you know where you will be one year from today. Think again. Wherever you are right now; the people who are around you, the places you frequent, your relationship status, financial status, health status... even the area in which you reside are all outward projections of your inner world and your current stage of development. In the blink of an eye you could find yourself doing a slow circle turnabout as you wonder, “Whoa! How did I get here? My world has done a sudden 180.” It’s as if you have taken a quantum leap, but that leap has actually been a long time in the making. It is a result of your personal life cycles. I know what you are thinking. “That’s an interesting thought, but a year from now my life will most likely be pretty much the same.” That could be, but let me ask you this... Think about the year you met your spouse, the year you unexpectedly changed career paths or fate might have brought you to a new city (maybe fate brought you to Long Island, NY from someplace else), the
year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice. We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion. This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle. A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life. Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again. Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite
This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com. For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves! What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced
Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! Inspired By Survivor’s Story Smithtown High School West recently welcomed Holocaust survivor Ruth Minsky Sender to speak to the Holocaust and genocide classes of Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West. Sender is
the author of “The Cage, To Life,” “The Holocaust Lady” and “While There’s Life.” She shared her experiences of a tragic time in history and how she wrote poetry while in the camp. The poems depicted
scenes of anguish, but also inspired others to continue their will to live. Her testimony helps educate the new generation of the atrocities of the past and inspires them to live a life free of hate.

Smithtown Seeks Alumni Submissions for Wall of Heroes Smithtown Central School District is seeking submissions from its alumni for its Wall of Heroes. The two high schools are currently compiling information from alumni – graduates of Smithtown High School West, Smithtown High School East, Central High School and Smithtown Branch High School – who have served in any branch
of the armed forces. The district would like to honor those individuals who have defended our freedom.
