tudents from the Great Hollow Middle School mock trial team recently swept four cases at the 32nd Annual Western Suffolk BOCES Mock Trial Tournament at Dowling College. Two GHMS prosecution teams and two defense teams won four different, complex and lengthy criminal legal battles, ranging from 90 minutes to more than two hours. The GHMS team consists of 25 students. Their adviser is Richard Restifo. Congratulations!

Pleasant Elementary School’s new outdoor ecology center, Eagle Scout Ryan O’Dea of Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge) constructed four benches for the children attending the school so they can be taken outside on nice days to learn about all different types of things in the

environment around them. Utilizing 36 volunteers under his leadership, more than 400 hours were logged to create and install the benches for the students’ educational benefit. A Smithtown High School West Senior, Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge)’s 89th Eagle Scout Ryan O’Dea plans to

attend the College of St. Rose in Albany for music industry. Accepting the project on behalf of the students at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School was Joseph Ierano, the principal, in front of one of the four benches with Eagle Scout Ryan O’Dea.

Branch Brook Elementary School fifthgraders recently presented their entertaining and humorous rendition of “Big Bad Musical.” The musical tells the story of the notorious Big Bad Wolf (played by Leah Kelly), who is in the midst of defending a class-action lawsuit filed

by storybook characters Little Red Riding Hood, Grandmother Hood the Three Little Pigs, the Old Shepherd and the Boy Who Cried Wolf. With Sydney Grimm as the commentator on live Court TV, the two greatest legal minds in the Enchanted Forest clash in this historic

courtroom battle — the Evil Stepmother serving as the defense and the Fairy Godmother as the prosecution. The Wolf made a strong case for innocence during a lighthearted song and dance, leaving the jury/ audience with a tough decision.

Half of the students decorated the shapes in cool colors (blues, purples, and greens) while the other half of the members used warm colors (reds, yellows, and oranges). The students also had the opportunity to take part in painting the background of the canvas. The shapes were used to form two hands embracing in friendship. This powerful piece is on display in the front hallway at the school. Advisors Mary Hanna,

Regina Gleason, and Adele Daigger were very proud of all the Best of Buddies members‚ hard work and dedication. The Best of Buddies philosophy is to build meaningful, long lasting friendships between students based on trust. Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) Does Not Need to Disrupt Your Life Almost one in every four women in the United States have some sort of pelvic floor disorder such as pelvic organ prolapse, and more women are likely to be affected as the population ages. Jennifer Hill, MD, a urologist specializing in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, discusses what you need to know about this condition.

What are the risk factors? Risk factors for POP include difficult deliveries, a family history of POP, obesity, advancing age, a prior hysterectomy and conditions that chronically increase intra-abdominal pressure such as asthma, chronic cough or constipation. What is pelvic organ prolapse (POP)? Pelvic organ prolapse refers to the prolapse (drooping) of any of the pelvic floor organs such as the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel or rectum. These organs are said to prolapse if they descend into or outside of the vaginal canal or anus. Are there different types of POP? There are several different types of prolapse. These include: • Cystocele — a prolapse of the bladder into the vagina, the most common condition • Uterine prolapse — a prolapse of the uterus into the vaginal canal • Vaginal vault prolapse — prolapse of the vagina • Enterocele — small bowel prolapse • Rectocele — rectum prolapse

What are the symptoms? Many women do not have symptoms and do not require treatment. However, urinary and bowel urgency and frequency, vaginal bulging, and pelvic pain and pressure are all common symptoms of prolapse that may be very bothersome to the patient. What treatments are available? Many women with POP can manage their symptoms conservatively with pelvic floor exercises to tighten and strengthen the pelvic floor, high-fiber diets to prevent constipation, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding activities that stress the pelvic muscles, such as heavy lifting.

If conservative management fails, and the pain and discomfort are still present, you may want to consider having surgery for the condition. Often, more than one of these types of surgery are needed at the same time. The types of surgery available include: • Cystoscele repair — for bladder prolapse • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) — for uterine prolapse • Rectocele repair — repair of the rectum • Enterocele repair — repair of small bowel prolapsing into the vagina • Vaginal vault repair — suspension of the vaginal vault • Closure of the vagina — for severe procidentia (all pelvic organs protruding from the vagina)

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

Transit Safety The Suffolk Region PTA, in collaboration with the New York School Bus Contractors Association and the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, recently held a special session on child school bus safety. Four local school bus companies participated, hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service

in Bay Shore. Nearly 100 people from all over Suffolk County attended the event, designed to help parents better understand the safety features on modern school buses and the training requirements of drivers. Information provided includes the Top Ten Questions You Should Be Asking Your Bus Company. Demonstrations included

proper emergency evacuations, student management of crossings to and from the bus stop using the mirror system, child check safety using internal and external cameras, motion detectors, the significance of stop arms, and the necessity of children avoiding the danger zone of 10 feet in front of the bus.

Commack High School’s History Bowl Team recently participated in the New York City Regional Competition for the first time and took first place - undefeated with a 6-0 record. The team is now headed to the Nationals in Washington, D.C., in April. Commack was the only undefeated team present, finishing with a 6-0 record by defeating Team “New Castle” 290150 in the championship match. Team members include senior Sean Briody

(Captain), senior Daniel Hosseinian, freshman Samuel Petruzzi, and freshman Muzaffer Tasoglu. In the National History Bee individual competition held the same day, Sean placed third in the varsity division, and Samuel and Muzaffer placed first and second respectively in the Junior Varsity division. Later that week, in the U.S. History Bee individual competition held at Kings Park High School, Sean and Muzaffer placed first and

second, respectively. These individual competition victories qualify each participant for the National Competition held in April. Senior Jason Tropper placed first regionally in the U.S. Geography Olympiad individual buzzer competition held at Kings Park. Muzaffer and Samuel also qualified for Nationals in the Geography Olympiad through the qualifying test, and Jason also qualified for Nationals for the U.S. History Bee.

The Smithtown High School East boys varsity basketball team conducted a Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser during the winter season, with the junior varsity squad also participating.

Nine students from the Smithtown Central School District have advanced to the state level of the National PTA Reflections program. Reflections provides pre-K-12 students with an opportunity to demonstrate their creative talents and express themselves through original works of art in dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Smithtown’s state qualifiers were honored at the March Board of Education meeting. They were congratulated by

Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane, Board Vice President Joanne McEnroy and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Jennifer Bradshaw. Congratulations to the following students: Abby Fain (High School West, literature), Tiffany Holtje (High School West, visual arts), Monica Philbin (High School West, photography), Ilysa Sirota (High School East, visual arts), Savannah Keenan (St. James Elementary School, visual arts), Leah Kelly (Branch Brook Elementary School, music and dance), Josie Muratore

and teacher aide Cynthia Greenberg for their contributions in preparing the show.

Living Lesson

Tenth-grade students at Smithtown High Schools East and West learned about the history of conflict in Rwanda and received a heartfelt message about perseverance from someone who lived it. Joseph Sebarenzi, whose Photo courtesy of: Smithtown Central School parents, seven siblings and countless other family District members were among 800,000 Tutsi brutally murdered by extremist Rwandan Hutus during 90 days of genocide in 1994, recently visited both schools to give his

firsthand account of how he turned around his life, and so many others. Sebarenzi spoke about returning to Rwanda following the massacre, and his election as speaker of parliament, a position he held from 1997 until 2000. Today, he is a professional public speaker who discusses reconciliation and conflict management with thousands of students at high school, colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. In addition, Sebarenzi

serves on the faculty at the School for International Training in Vermont, teaching reconciliation and conflict management courses. In 2009, Sebarenzi’s memoir “God Sleeps in Rwanda: A Journey of Transformation” was published, chronociling his survival of civil wars and genocide, his professional career, including his years in politics, and insights about conflict prevention and reconciliation.

Suffolk Students Honored Thirteen distinguished Suffolk County Community College students were presented with the 2015 Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence at an Albany ceremony hosted by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L.
