Thanks to Governor Cuomo’s leadership and support, State Parks is excited to host the return of the Air Show. The Town of Smithtown will keep its reputation as Tree City USA for the 34th year in a row. The Town of Smithtown was first declared Tree City USA in 1986 by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Since then, the Town of Smithtown has taken great pride in managing a vigorous and sustainable urban forestry program. “I am truly grateful for the commitment and dedication exhibited daily by our Urban Foresters and the Department of Environment and Waterways; led by David Barnes. The quality of our green space has never been more paramount to the health of our community. As we continue to live in a worldwide pandemic, Smithtown’s beautiful parks, downtown areas and neighborhoods have become a sanctuary for everyone to find peace of mind.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim In addition to maintaining the title of Tree City USA, the Town of Smithtown was recognized with a ‘Growth Award’ by the Arbor Day Foundation. The Growth Award is given when a town completes major milestones and annual activities to build a sustainable community forestry program. Smithtown completed a
portion of tree inventory and implemented a public tree care guide, which is delivered to each home where a town tree is planted. The town has currently inventoried 10,000 street trees, or 20% of the town’s estimated 50,000 total street tree census. In addition to these growth initiatives, the Town of Smithtown’s Urban Forestry division has begun a rigorous awareness campaign and has applied for a grant from Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA) to survey ash trees for the emerald ash borer beetle. In 2020 the Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, and the Highway department planted over 675 trees combined.
The National Arbor Day Foundation is a countrywide not-for-profit organization committed to promoting the benefits that trees provide for wildlife habitat, improving air quality and increasing property values. The Foundation recognizes communities as a Tree City, USA with tree care programs that meet four criteria; A local ordinance to protect trees, funding of a local tree care program at a minimum of $2 per capita, a “tree board” to oversee the local tree care program and an annual observance of Arbor Day. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park will return this Memorial Day weekend after a one-year absence. The outdoor show, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, features a range of military and civilian aerial performers. This year’s show will be a ticketed event, with reduced capacity and social distancing measures in place to ensure a safe return of the patriotic Long Island beachfront tradition. “As we continue to see progress in our fight against COVID and cautiously reopen our state, we can look forward to enjoying more and more outdoor adventures this summer - including the annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park,” Governor Cuomo said. “With safety measures in place, New Yorkers and visitors can get back to enjoying all that Jones Beach and Long Island State Parks have to offer, and this annual festival is a great way to get outdoors and support the regional Long Island economy.” The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of the most popular events on Long Island, was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Its return this year brings back a Memorial Day weekend tradition that celebrates the beginning of summer at Long Island’s beaches, and honors military families and those who serve our country. This year’s show features the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the United States Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog), United States Army Golden Knights U.S. Army parachute team, and United States Coast Guard Search and Rescue team, as well as many other worldclass civilian performers. The Bethpage Air Show will take place Friday, May 28, (Practice show); Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day. PSEG Long Island is preparing for the upcoming osprey breeding season by inspecting known nesting areas, performing maintenance on the osprey cams it installed last year, and cleaning out debris and garbage in the nests located near the cameras in Oyster Bay and Patchogue, N.Y. “On a recent cold, wintery day, crews visited the two osprey nests viewable via the PSEG Long Island osprey cam to clean and reinforce the cameras and remove debris from the nests,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution, PSEG Long Island. “We look forward to the return of the osprey pairs so we can all enjoy a glimpse of these majestic birds in their natural environment.” To view the work at the nest, visit https://youtu.be/

Many times, the osprey will gather garbage, such as plastic bags, fishing wire — and in this case, even a bungee cord with a large metal hook — to build their nests. Fishing lines and strings may wrap around the birds’ feet, preventing them from leaving the nest. Plastic litter is very easy to find and since the birds live close to humans, plastics often are found in nests. In balancing its commitment to the consistent, safe delivery of power for its customers with its commitment to being a good environmental steward, PSEG Long Island has
installed dozens of new osprey nesting platforms to deter the returning birds from nesting on electrical equipment, which puts both the raptors and the electrical system in danger. Maintaining the nesting platforms helps PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. As part of PSEG Long Island’s annual inspections of the transmission and distribution system across Long Island and the Rockaways, electric service workers take notice of any dangerous nesting activity near electrical equipment. Ospreys instinctively seek lofty places for their nests, often choosing utility poles and transmission structures. When ospreys build a nest on electrical equipment, it puts the nest in danger of catching fire, which can cause significant damage

Make Way for the Osprey PSEG Long Island Cleans Osprey Nests To Prepare For The Raptors’ Return and outages to customers, as well has harm to the ospreys. The birds are at high risk of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. PSEG Long Island has installed 24-hour webcams at two of the nests safely relocated by line workers. Since the resurgence of the osprey population, PSEG Long Island and its dedicated team have identified best practices for when to move a nest, and when to create alternative safer nests for the ospreys. Long Island is home to more than 400 species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the population decreased and sites on or near waterways 1950s through the 1970s, became endangered. The has contributed to the rise Long Island’s osprey effort to build safe nesting in the population of osprey.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. The Board of Directors, members, supporters and volunteers of CFK are all “Contractors For Kids.” They are all helping others and building futures for children and their families in need. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is
located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Donations are so important to CFK, especially being that they receive no grant money. They would like to thank all thsoe who attended their Scavenger Hunt fundraising event on April 10th. Their next fundraising event will be a golf outing on June 14th, stay tuned for more information! TROTTA RECOGNIZED BY NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER - Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has sponsored a blood drive in his community since elected seven years ago, and St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park has co-hosted it. The drive helps collect much needed blood for the New York Blood Center, which distributes it to hospitals throughout Long Island. “Hospitals are always in need of blood supplies, especially now during COVID-19, so it is important that if you can donate blood to do so because one pint of blood can help save three lives,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. Smithtown Native Paying It Forward In A Uniquely Personal Way Five Smithtown High School East students will be receiving college scholarships, thanks to Smithtown native and Smithtown High School East alum, Ari Spar. This is the second year in a row that Spar has given out scholarships to his alma mater. Spar worked with the one2one USA Foundation, an innovative organization that personalizes charitable giving, to customize a scholarship program for his hometown and also helped select each of the students. Spar, a successful businessman who came from modest means, felt a strong connection to his high school and recognized that similar lower-middleclass and high achieving students can fall through the cracks when it comes to scholarship funds. He decided to pay it forward with this Program. Through his partnership
with one2one, Spar was able to create the scholarships to meet his specific criteria. one2one, with the aid of Smithtown High School East, and through a detailed application and review process, then presented Spar with the qualified candidates. Through in depth Zoom interviews, Spar got to know each candidate, and ultimately decided to grant five students with a scholarship towards their college education. Each scholarship is $12,500 over four years. The five students who are receiving these scholarships this year are: • Angelina L. is a member of the Varsity Volleyball Team, a volunteer coach for Smithtown Little League, and an officer in the Italian Honor Society as well as a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to study Dentistry.
• Arianna R. is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, SADD, Friends of the Smithtown Library and Treasurer of Family, Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). She plans on studying Criminal Justice/Pre-Law at Tulane University. • Chadwick B. is a singer in multiple bands, a songwriter with over 1000 original lyrics and a Teen Companion at Long Island Young Widows Group. He plans on studying Psychology and Music Engineering. • Hannah A. is the Treasurer of the National Art Honor Society and a member of the National Honor Society, English Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She also participated in the STEM program at Stony Brook University and is a Student Advisor on the Smithtown Youth Bureau.
Hannah plans on studying Accounting, Architecture or Chemistry. • Sydney A. is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Math Honor Society, Vice-President of SADD and Treasurer of Athletes Helping Athletes. She is also a member of both the Varsity Lacrosse Team and Varsity Field Hockey Team as well as being an All-Division, All-County and Scholar Athlete. Sydney plans on studying Nursing. Spar, a Smithtown native and avid philanthropist throughout his life stated, “It was the most personalized philanthropic effort I’ve ever done. I haven’t experienced joy like that from giving, and I do it a lot. I truly felt like I was part of the process. When you write a check to a university, you have no say in where it goes…(t)his
experience was different. It reflects how you’re feeling and how you want to give.” Smithtown High School East Principal, Kevin Simmons stated, “I would like to…thank you and express how proud we are for the partnership we have forged with the Spar Scholarship Program. Through the one2one USA Foundation’s generosity, awarded students have received significant funding to assist with their collegiate costs and expenses”. Scott Krase, Founder of the one2one USA Foundation, turned his family’s practice of targeted, personbased philanthropy into an organization that works to connect donors with individual donees. Krase noted “when we created one2one, we wanted to do exactly what Ari needed – identify a passion or community need, build
