Angel Ball Set The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention programs, is pleased to announce that the 30th annual Angel Ball will pay tribute to Adele C. Smithers, a champion in the field of addiction and recovery. The Community Champion Award will be received by Suffolk County Police Commissioner, Tim Sini. The Angel Ball will take place on Monday, May 1st, at the Garden City Hotel in Garden City. Event begins at 6:30 p.m. For thirty years, the Angel Ball has brought together parents, educators

and leaders in government, law enforcement, and the treatment field to support of LICADD’s programs. LICADD’s Angel Ball is one of the nonprofit organization’s key fundraising events and organizers hope to raise more than $300,000 through sponsorships, ticket sales and onsite auctions/raffles. TSC Track Club members Sophia Muccini and Siena Muccini were second and third respectively for a 1, 2, 3 sweep of the podium positions. The three of them are 13, 14 and 12 years-old. The overall winner, and first in the men’s group, was Francis O’Brien with

a time of 16:47.9. He was followed closely by Patrick Conklin at 16:51.6 and Christopher Strzelinski with a time of 16:57.7. The event was covered by Telecare TV, the National Catholic television network that operates from here on Long Island and covered by Telecare’s own host Karen Smith. In addition to covering the event for Telecare, Smith competed in the event and won first place as the fastest

women’s Catholic educator with a time of 27:27.3. While the podium was dominated by young runners the event drew runners from every age group and acknowledged their accomplishments. Even former St. Joseph’s Principal Eileen Kilbriide came out and ran in the event, winning in her age group. Said Kilbride, “This is a wonderful cause and they deserve our support.”

participants went to Long Beach Catholic Regional School with St. Martin of Tours School in Amityville right on their heels. Private running clubs were well represented by the TSC Track Club from Floral Park sending a large, and fast, group of runners. As a USATAF Certified/ Sanctioned 5K Course, all participants in the race were chipped for exact timing, and the course for precise distance. There were gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in a variety of age brackets as well as a few categories that were purely fun. Some of the noteworthy performances included a second win in a row for women’s overall winner Lauryn Heskin. Lauryn, representing the TSC Track Club set a record with her 2016 run, and was the first women’s finisher again in 2017 with a time of 18:30.7. Lauryn was slightly off her 2016 pace because Lauryn, an eighth grader, had a busier than normal personal

Joseph’s School parent and business community comes together in a powerful way to support the children and families of Long Island’s Catholic Elementary Schools,” said Spinelli. Vice Chairman of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation and run supporters Frank Liantonio and Chris Tully were on hand to thank supporters personally. Over 800 runners participated in the Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, a 5K charity race/fun run hosted by St. Joseph School in Garden City. The event, now in its second year, drew runners from as far east as Greenport, and as far west as Brooklyn. This year’s 812 participants, along with sponsoring businesses and families raised over $18,000 for the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, the Long Island based charity that supports Catholic elementary students and schools. In addition to a 7:30 a.m. Mass prior to the event, Bishop John Barres was on hand to meet and greet the organizations and individuals supporting the event. Bishop Barres offered a blessing to both the fun run participants and to the race participants prior to the two starts. Race Director Dr. Michael Spinelli said, “We are very pleased with the support this race has gained within the community, and grateful for the support of the businesses, families and participants that make this possible,” said Dr. Spinelli. “The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is an outstanding local charity and the St.

And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

spring holiday baskets. Throughout March, the school collected donations from families and staff members to fill the baskets. The baskets, more than 100 in total, were filled with candy, stuffed animals and handmade cards to be distributed by the River Fund of New York to

children in need. The River Fund is an organization that provides food relief all year long for children, working families in need, and the homeless and low-income seniors. The baskets will be delivered prior to Easter.

Path to Success Motivational speaker Mitch Shapiro presented a lecture on overcoming adversity and personal challenges to ninth- and 10th-grade students at Smithtown High School West on April 4th. Shapiro, who is a Smithtown resident and

founder of the Foundation for Sight and Sound, spoke to the students about the challenges he has faced in his life overcoming hearing loss and blindness. “Your future is in your hands,” he told the students. “Find something you are good at and do something you

enjoy. There’s no wall that’s so high and so solid that you can’t get over it or through it.” Shapiro challenged students to see past their obstacles – much like he has done in his life – so they can identify their journey to success.

Out of the Park Major League Baseball’s opening day festivities paled in comparison to all the baseball-themed learning activities at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District on April 3rd. Donning their favorite baseball team attire, fourth-grade students celebrated the start of a new baseball season by participating in Baseball Day which featured math, literacy, science, music and art lessons. Students

dissected the poem “Casey at the Bat” and answered questions and read biographies about famous baseball players. Classes listened to the famous comedy act “Who’s on First?” by Abbott and Costello and tried to determine who was at each position. Students also wrote their own poems to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” In an hands-on science experiment, students had to bounce a tennis ball, baseball, softball, ping

pong ball, golf ball and whiffle ball to predict and measure its bounce height. The fourth-graders listened to “The Greatest” by Kenny Rogers and wrote their thoughts on the song’s meaning on their own baseballs. The students practiced fractions and ordering during their math lesson to determine innings played by different baseball players. During their physical education classes, students headed to the fields to play ball.

Smithtown High School East social studies students learned about hope, tolerance and courage during Holocaust Remembrance and Genocide Awareness Day on April 5th. Holocaust survivor and Smithtown resident Werner Reich was the guest speaker to classes in the morning session. Reich spoke about his time in concentration camps, using his oppressive experience to teach the

students how to take action in a situation. In the afternoon, author and Rwandan genocide survivor Joseph Sebarenzi spoke to students about how his parents, seven siblings and countless family members were among the 800,000 Tutsi murdered over the course of 90 days in 1994 in Rwanda. Sebarenzi’s book “God Sleeps in Rwanda” recalls his survival but also provides insight about conflict prevention and

reconciliation. During classroom activities, students watched films such as “The Killing Fields” on Cambodian genocide, “Hotel Rwanda” on the Rwandan genocide and “Devil Came on Horseback” about the genocide in Darfur. Students also wrote a reaction essay on how they could choose an escape route if they were in Syria during its conflict.

Scouting for Food

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, cheerful… Boy Scouts from Troop 125 were out in force on Sunday, March 5th, participating in national call to service through the annual food drive, Scouting for Food. Canned and boxed goods were donated by community members, as the scouts requested donations shoppers at Commack’s King Kullen (Vets Hwy) and ShopRite (Crooked Hill Rd). An impressive 2,073 pounds were collected that

day, which, in addition to other food collection efforts throughout the year, made for an annual total food collection of 3,496 pounds by the scouts. The food variety included staples such as soup, tuna, assorted canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, rice, olive oil, sauces and cereals. The peanut butter and jelly collected helped restock the shelves for the Commack United Methodist Church’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang, whose customary sandwich making takes

place on the first Saturday of every month and is open to anyone who wishes to help the hungry in the community. Boy Scout Troop 125 meets every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Commack United Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys ages 11 through 18 residing in Commack, Dix Hills, East Northport, Kings Park, Smithtown and their surrounding communities.

High Jumper Honored

Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to congratulate a young athlete in the community who has broken records here in New York State. Daniel Claxton a senior at Smithtown East High School, who is currently one of the top high school jumpers in the United States came with his

coaches and parents to the Suffolk County Legislature in order to receive this accolade. Daniel Claxton jumped 7 feet and 1/4th of an inch, breaking his high school, County and State record. Daniel is a model athlete and student and serves as a role model to the younger members of his team.

He plans to attend the University of Connecticut in the fall. “I am very proud of Dan, for accomplishing this athletic feat; he has showed us that hard work and dedication pays off,” said Legislator Kennedy. “The University of Connecticut is lucky to have him this fall.”

Eagle Coach Training

On Tuesday evening, March 28th, Scout leaders and volunteers gathered at the Suffolk Y JCC (Commack) for a two-hour seminar on becoming an Eagle Scout Coach. The training was provided by the Matinecock District, Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America. It was led by Matinecock District Advancement Chair David Hunt and Advancement Committee member Deb Trifon, who have a combined 20 years of experience coaching Boy Scouts who wish to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Participants were led

through Eagle Scout Service Project, a community service project that takes an average of 9 to 12 months for an Eagle Scout candidate to complete. Eagle Scout Coach is now an official adult position in the Boy Scouts of America. “Last year, 85 Scouts achieved Eagle Scout Rank in the Matinecock District,” explained Mr. Hunt, “and our objective is to increase that number every year. The service projects that they provide not only benefit our communities, but they are also a springboard for providing

leadership experience to our young men, and giving them confidence in their leadership abilities.” The Matinecock District offers this training twice a year. The next seminar will be held on Wednesday, September 27th, 2017. Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves over 12,000 youth, boys and girls, and is powered by over 2,000 adult volunteers. Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta invited Kings Park resident and St. Anthony High School senior to the general meeting of the legislature to recognize him for being the only Catholic High School student named in New

York State as a semifinalist in the National Regeneron Science Talent Search (formerly Intel). This contest is America’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition in the nation. “I am thrilled to have such a bright and

accomplished student in my district. This award took a lot of hard work and fortitude and is also a reflection on the great teachers and leadership at St. Anthony’s High School,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.

Virtual Exploration More than 40 students at Ridge Elementary School recently participated in a unique learning experience. Virtually exploring states and geographical landmarks throughout the country, the students shared their research with handcrafted postcards addressed to students in different classrooms within the school building. “I liked sending my

postcard to my friends in another class and getting a one from my friends in another class,” said student Joshua Kaplan. Students researched their chosen state using maps, books from the school’s library, and online resources. In several classes, the students worked collaboratively in small groups. “Our students worked on comprehension, recalling

On Friday night at the United Methodist Church in Smithtown, Boy Scout Troop 565 of Smithtown New York held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Christopher J. Philips. Leslie Kennedy was proud to be one of the dignitaries to honor Christopher on his big day. In order to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout one must accomplish a number of things in their

Scouting life. A Scout must earn thirteen merit badges from an approved list, plus another eight of their own choosing, and he must complete a service project to benefit his community. To fulfill his community service project Christopher built a fire pit for the Smithtown Historical Society. This fire pit creates a safe place where local clubs and organizations can have a

campfire for special events. “I am extremely proud of this young man Christopher for reaching the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Legislator Kennedy “He has done a good thing for this community, and I am sure he will continue to give back to his community in the years to come. Christopher did a wonderful job constructing the fire pit.”

Hauppauge High School is pleased to announce that Jillian Lawrence won 2nd Place and Jacklyn Goldblatt won 3rd Place in the Suffolk County Judicial Women in the Courts Essay competition in celebration of National Women’s History Month. Lawrence won $250 and Goldblatt won $100

for their winning essays, which were presented at a special awards ceremony on March 24th at the John P. Cohalan, Jr. Courthouse in Central Islip, New York. “Why I Cannot Wait to Vote” was the essay topic for the competition, which was open to all high school juniors in Suffolk County. There were 139 essays

submitted from 13 Countywide high schools from which eight students won awards. “The Hauppauge High School Social Studies Department is very proud of their Jillian’s and Jaclyn’s recognition,” stated AP U.S. History Teacher Ellen Robbins.

Power Brunch The Smithtown Industry Advisory Board hosted its 15th annual female power brunch on March 31st at the Smithtown High School West library. Approximately 80 female students from Smithtown High School West, who were chosen by their

guidance counselors, were in attendance. The brunch featured two different panel presentations by females in different areas of business, ranging from authors to small business owners to doctors and lawyers. The morning and
