When someone requests a personal jail tour for their teen through the Sheriff’s website, it will initiate a call from a Correction Officer who will often talk with the parent about the problems they are having with their child, and an appointment is made to visit the Riverhead Correctional Facility, in a group setting or individually. Once they arrive at the jail, the youth and their parents will learn about the day-to-day life inside the correctional facility. After the introduction, the Correction Officer will show them the crowded holding cells and walk through different housing areas. The tour ends in the jail’s chapel area where inmates will talk frankly with the youth about how their own poor decisions led to incarceration. “A lot of the kids and their parents are very emotional

following the jail tour, and it undoubtedly leads many of these teens to reconsider how their behavior is leading them down the wrong path. I would urge parents to consider taking their teens on a jail tour if they are exhibiting very defiant behavior, and to do it before it’s too late.” stated DeMarco. When Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco began offering “Youth Enlightenment” personal jail tours in 2010 for parents and their at-risk youth, he didn’t realize the impact it would have on the teenage participants. “We wanted to show young people the realities of jail: the loud sounds of cells clanking shut, the lack of privacy, the noises, and we wanted these youth to come away with a strong feeling that jail was not a place they wanted to be,” stated DeMarco. He added, “But what we learned over time by giving these tours is that the parents of these defiant kids really need support. The Correction Officers who run these tours have become a resource for parents who don’t know where else to turn for help.” The personal jail tours are available to Suffolk County residents and their

The four courses are Indian Island Golf Course in Riverhead, Bergen Point Golf Course in Babylon, West Sayville Golf Course, and Timber Point Golf Course in Great River. As part of the Tomodachi Japan Society Junior Fellows Student Exchange Program, Smithtown High School East had the opportunity to welcome two students from Japan during their two week stay in Smithtown. Tenth grade Japanese student, Haruku Ito, had been staying with her host family, the Lynns, and attending class with

Gabrielle Lynn. Gabrielle is an alumni of the program, spending three weeks last summer in Japan attending school and learning about the Japanese culture. Anna Irei, who attends 11th grade in Japan, had been staying with her host family, the Chandlers, and shadowed Allison Chandler around school. Allison was one of 10 students

nation-wide to apply and be accepted to travel to Japan this summer. She will be leaving for Tokyo on June 30th where she will spend 2 weeks with a host family and 1 week traveling around Japan with members of the program. All enjoyed an experience of a lifetime!

The new legislation, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman, (I-Montauk) expands a pilot program that make the veteran fee reductions at county golf courses permanent. “After one of the harshest winters on record, we gather to say goodbye to winter and hello to the 2014 Suffolk County Golf Season with new discounted rates for veterans and active military personnel,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation to reduce military veterans’ golfing fees permanently in Suffolk County.”

Pet Supplies Plus and Natura, the makers of Evo, Innova, California Natural, Iams & Eukanuba pet foods have donated more than 80,000 pounds of dog food to help feed the hungry dogs of Long Island. All 10 Pet Supplies Plus locations on Long Island have participated in a “buy a pound/donate a pound” program to benefit pets in need. During the donation period of February 10th to March 9th, for every pound of Evo, Innova, Cal Natural, Iams or Eukanuba dog food purchased at a Pet Supplies Plus store, Natura donated a pound to the local food bank. 80,000 pounds of

dog food was sent in full trailer trucks on March 24th and March 26th to Long Island Cares, who graciously accepted the huge donation and made space in their warehouse. Pet Supplies Plus owner Stanley Lang says that, “Making sure that the animals of Long Island are properly fed and taken care of is near and dear to our hearts here at Pet Supplies Plus. We wouldn’t want struggling families to have to drop off their pets at the local animal shelter because they could not feed them. We hope this donation helps hundreds if not thousands of families

on Long Island.” Since 2010, Long Island Cares has distributed nearly 500,000 pounds of pet food and pet supplies through its network of 590 community-based member agencies that assist families in need to maintain their pets at home, as opposed to placing them in shelters. Are we done with the random, sudden snowstorms - you know, the ones originally forecast as a 50% chance of rain? Can we begin the planting process without fear of our blossoms being petrified by the next deep freeze? One can only hope. At least baseball is back. Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the

roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it

always seem like it rains on those days? Of course, there’s something to be said for tackling that “spring” cleaning we’ve been putting off for the last year or so. And that closet… I don’t know about you all, but the nicer weather motivates me to do some serious shopping – if only I had room to stuff one more hanger in between the massive wardrobe collection that has taken up permanent residence. Ah, but if that’s the biggest problem, I’d say it’s shaping up to be a pretty fine spring indeed.

More than 60 Hauppauge middle and high school students were among the 540 total

students Islandwide who participated in Long Island History Day competition at Hofstra University

in March. The students competed in a variety of categories, including: Historical Paper, Group

and Individual Exhibit, Group and Individual Documentary, Group and Individual Website and Group Performance. Hauppauge’s award recipients in the Long Island History Day competition were: Junior Division – Middle School Lauren Romito placed first in the Long Island History Fair for her historical paper titled: The Influence of Title IX on Women’s Athletics. Romito will continue on to the New York State History Competition that will be held in Cooperstown, NY on April 28th, 2014.

LI History Day Danny Claps won a special award, sponsored by the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, for his entry on Conservation, Preservation, Restoration or Entry Tied to a Historic Site for his website titled: Preserving National Parks. Erin Fan won Best in School for her historical paper titled: The Meiji Constitution: Defining Rights and Responsibilities in Japan Senior Division High School Elise Zhao won third place for her individual website titled: China’s One Child Policy. Cuzzi and Kriya Patel placed third for their group website titled: United States Responsibility in the Khmer Rouge Genocide. Reah Vasilakopoulos won a special award for an entry on Peacemaker or Practitioner of NonViolence, sponsored by Hofstra’s Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives, for her historical paper titled Apartheid: Diminishing the Rights of Black South Africans. Liz Littos won Best in School for her individual exhibit titled: Too Young to Wed – Child Brides in Yemen.

On To The Next Journey

I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision. Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing. Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America. Although not many

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless. As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors. Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience. Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

and rural influences. My parents are hesitant for me to enroll, as it is in a foreign area. It is hard to pass up such a prestigious education, so I have to visit to be sure it is the right place for me. As I write this article, I am sitting on a plane headed for Atlanta, row 35, seat C, contemplating my future. In a few hours, I will be on campus, where I hope to spend my next four years. Next week, I hope to tell you about my experience. I hope it is a positive one! With any luck, I will meet some very nice people and have a great time. Go Eagles!

Remove the moisture and you remove the mold. • Myth: Thicker carpeting will wear longer and better. • Fact: It is not the thickness or plushness of the carpeting but the density of the fibers that will be a telling clue of durability. This means a relatively thin carpet that is woven densely will likely last quite a while. • Myth: Carpeting can never be truly clean. • Fact: No surface can be 100 percent free from dirt. But with proper cleaning, carpeting can be just as clean as other flooring materials. Many people would like to have carpeting in their homes but are deterred by a handful of enduring myths. Vegetables generally need ample warmth and sunlight to thrive, so find an area of the yard that gets several hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny spot is good, but you also want a location with adequate drainage so your garden does not succumb to flooding or fungus during and after heavy downpours. Know When To Plant Many of the foods grown in vegetable gardens, including tomatoes and peppers, are summer vegetables, which means they reach peak ripeness after the height of the summer season. Add Color To Kitchen Cabinets Many homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,” homeowners can expect to spend more than $53,000 on a major kitchen remodel and recoup just below 70 percent of that cost at resale. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add

life to a kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets. Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to

Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule. Remove the doors and hardware. When painting cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware. When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory.

This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting. Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry. Sand the surfaces. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old

paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting. Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future. Paint the cabinets. After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets. Begin with the inside edges and openings of

the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint. Reassemble the cabinets. Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

DANCE CONFERENCE - Hauppauge High School dance students recently attended the Tilles Center Dance Conference. The students took master classes in ballet, modern and contemporary dance and yoga. They also performed for adjudicators and received impressive remarks for their choreography and performance. In the evening, they performed in a concert that included the LIU Post Dance Company. High School Senior Elizabeth Costa’s choreography was showcased in a jazz dance performed by the Hauppauge High School dancers.

SPECIAL DINNER - Hauppauge High School’s National Honor Society members recently prepared a special dinner for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park. The Ronald McDonald House provides families with a place stay while their children receive medical treatment. The families, some of whom have spent more than 150 days there – come from all over the United States and the world. Seniors Katie Austin and Nick Lupo; and Juniors Nick Cecchini, Luke Farrell, Katie Finn, Sarah Jacobs and Vinnie Policastro prepared the dinner as part of the Ronald McDonald House “Meals from the Heart” program.

Gala Fundraiser supervisor at Angela’s house known for her kindness, compassion and dedication to her work, family and friends, and who’s life was lost far too soon. “Seeing how happy these children are in their new home, Angela’s House III, makes all of the work worthwhile. I am so thankful for everyone who supports what we are doing,” said Bob Policastro. Darren Krantz, a long time friend and supporter of the organization, was honored with the Angel Wings Award for his Race For Kids Organization, held at the Riverhead Raceway every year. Darren Krantz and his company, PRC Industries, have donated over $118,000 to the organization. Darren and his family and team for years have been generously promoting and raising money for Angela’s House and other children with special needs. His father, Arthur Krantz, has also been recognized for his support over the years as well. The Gala was an emotional night, one full of love and support. The organization was able to raise thousands of dollars, but more important than the money raised, was the awareness. Awareness is the most important;

money cannot buy what the result of awareness can bring. There is a deep-rooted desire that everyone who lives, works and supports this organization has to help these children and to assist parents in safely caring for their children at home. It is important for people to understand what the homes of Angela’s House are all about. “We have a burning desire to have to our children live in one of our homes verse living far from home or in a hospital or nursing home. We feel the children deserve our homes, ones that offer a warm and loving environment,” said Bob Policatro. While seeing the children who Angela’s House takes care of can sometimes be very sad and challenging, the event celebrated the lives of the beautiful children and how far they have come. It was a magical night, one that will reside in the hearts of everyone who was in attendance for the rest of their lives, as well as in the children and families that receive everyone’s love and support. TOURNAMENT FUNDRAISER - Hauppauge High School Girls Lacrosse Program held its first Lacrosse Tournament Fundraiser for Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children that are medically fragile in the community. The tournament was on Saturday, March 22nd, at Hauppauge High School. The new Varsity coach Diana Lopez and her coaching staff, Jerry Goodfellow and Tina Cascio, had 10 teams with over 200 girls playing in the tournament. They also had a concession stand serving food and beverages for purchase to those in attendance.

The Watermill in Smithtown was transformed from a beautiful catering hall into a space full of love, support, friends and family on March 27th. Over 250 people were in attendance, and although not everyone knew each other personally, they were not strangers. The Angela’s House Gala was an event that united people for a beautiful night, in support of the children and families of Angela’s House. “I feel blessed to have had such a big crowd and a very nice spirit the whole night. Thank you for your support which helped us to have a successful evening,” said Bob Policastro about the wonderful night. The Gala was a night not only for community members and friends to show their support for this amazing organization, but mostly it was for the families and the employees of Angela’s House to dedicate their lives to helping these children live happy, comfortable and joyful lives in a safe and loving environment. So, since we couldn’t bring the veterans to Etchings, we brought Etchings to the veterans.” VA Recreational Therapist, Lynda Page, said, “The second annual intergenerational visit of Commack High School students with the veterans was once again a huge success! The Veterans thoroughly enjoyed the poems the students wrote with smiles and stories shared by all. The cookies and baked goods were a delicious surprise. We are looking forward to their next visit in the near future.”

Giving Back Commack High School students and staff, representing Etchings, the high school’s annual arts and literary magazine, visited residents of the Northport VA Medical Center. The veterans and students enjoyed an afternoon of shared poetry, creative writing, and refreshments. In addition, the students presented a gift of $250 to the VA’s Recreational Therapy program. Etching’s faculty advisor, Kevin Dineen, shared that students “wanted to donate the proceeds of our magazine sales to the men and women who have given so much to our country.” It was the second
