The popular “All Kids Fair” returns to the Melville Marriott for the fifth straight year on Sunday, April 26th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This event, which won first place in the Event Category of the 2014 Long Island Web Awards, is a combination of education and activities expo and health and wellness fair. It offers entertainment choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. The All Kids Fair is excited to announce that Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 will appearing at the expo beginning at 10:30 a.m. In addition to posing for photos and signing autographs, Chef AJ, age 11, will be doing a demo at 3:30 p.m., featuring Belgian waffles, including a whipped cream challenge. Other guests of this
year’s event are: • QuackerJack from the Long Island Ducks (11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.) • Tanya, a juggler from the Big Apple Circus • Amy Marchany, Ms. Royal America 20112012 Over 80 exhibitor spaces and 24 kids’ classes provide valuable information for kids and their parents and grandparents. Fair founder Barbara Kaplan said, “The 2015 All Kids Fair will bring back many of last year’s favorite features and will add many new ones for the enjoyment of our visitors.” Exhibitors will cover schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, photography, kids’ products, college planning, and health and wellness services. Some of the classes children can share with their families are tap and ballet, hula hooping, crafts,
robotics, book readings, music performances, and tennis. Free valet parking, introduced in 2014, will be offered again. Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) Does Not Need to Disrupt Your Life
What are the risk factors? Risk factors for POP include difficult deliveries, a family history of POP, obesity, advancing age, a prior hysterectomy and conditions that chronically increase intra-abdominal pressure such as asthma, chronic cough or constipation. What is pelvic organ prolapse (POP)? Pelvic organ prolapse refers to the prolapse (drooping) of any of the pelvic floor organs such as the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel or rectum. These organs are said to prolapse if they descend into or outside of the vaginal canal or anus. Are there different types of POP? There are several different types of prolapse. These include: • Cystocele — a prolapse of the bladder into the vagina, the most common condition • Uterine prolapse — a prolapse of the uterus into the vaginal canal • Vaginal vault prolapse — prolapse of the vagina • Enterocele — small bowel prolapse • Rectocele — rectum prolapse
What are the symptoms? Many women do not have symptoms and do not require treatment. However, urinary and bowel urgency and frequency, vaginal bulging, and pelvic pain and pressure are all common symptoms of prolapse that may be very bothersome to the patient.
If conservative management fails, and the pain and discomfort are still present, you may want to consider having surgery for the condition. Often, more than one of these types of surgery are needed at the same time. The types of surgery available include: • Cystoscele repair — for bladder prolapse • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) — for uterine prolapse • Rectocele repair — repair of the rectum • Enterocele repair — repair of small bowel prolapsing into the vagina • Vaginal vault repair — suspension of the vaginal vault • Closure of the vagina — for severe procidentia (all pelvic organs protruding from the vagina)
What treatments are available? Many women with POP can manage their symptoms conservatively with pelvic floor exercises to tighten and strengthen the pelvic floor, high-fiber diets to prevent constipation, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding activities that stress the pelvic muscles, such as heavy lifting.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”
expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest
prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Fencing Champions At the March 24th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislators Robert Trotta and Steven Stern, who both represent parts of Commack, recognized the Commack Cougars’ Girls’ Fencing Team for capturing the Suffolk County tournament title. “I am pleased to honor the outstanding Commack
Girls’ Fencing Team on a remarkable record-setting season,” Legislator Stern said. “Through teamwork, dedication and hard work, the 2014-2015 fencing team has brought great pride to their families, their school and our entire community. Power Brunch The Smithtown Central School District Industry Advisory Board and Career Tracks Committee recently held the 13th Annual Women’s Power Brunch in the Smithtown High School West library. More than 80 female students from HSW attended, with prominent local businesswomen leading a discussion panel modeled after television’s “The View” and providing valuable advice to the students on hand. Representatives from local companies, such as Bob’s Jungle Reptiles, Blue
Chip Marketing, Holiday Inn Express, Passion 47 Inc. and Zebra Technologies participated in the event. Ingrid Hrvatin, the district’s administrator for guidance and pupil related services and Karen Ricigliano, Smithtown’s assistant superintendent for personnel, also shared their perspectives. Kristine Chayes, cochair of the Career Tracks Committee and field editor with Taste of Home magazine said young females entering the workforce often overlook many non-traditional
careers available to them, and conducting forums such as this helps to bring certain opportunities to light. Karen Arthus of Sunrise Business Solutions co-chairs the committee with Chayes. The Smithtown CSD IAB and Career Tracks Committee rotates the event between the district’s two high schools, so next year’s brunch will take place at Smithtown High School East. Hauppauge High School is pleased to announce that two students were semifinalists in this year’s annual Design-A-Card Contest sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Freshman Umut Baran Kahyaoglu won 7th place (teacher: Jonathan Hernández), and Sophomore Dana Liuzzo (teacher: Rosemarie Torres) took 9th place at the Senior High School level. Kahyaoglu drew a portrait
of the internationally known figure of Colombian coffee Juan Valdez, and Liuzzo’s image depicted a silhouette of the Spanish Fighting Bull. The Design-A-Card Contest was open to all students of teachers who are members of the AATSP organization. The competition was judged on three different levels: Senior High School (grades 7-12), Middle School (grades 6-8) and Elementary School (grades K-5). The Contest offers
Long Island students an opportunity to create an original Hispanic/Spanish design (of cultural scenes, images, landmarks, maps, etc.) to be printed and used as an actual postcard to help raise funds to support the Judy Abrams/Margaret Fernández National Spanish Examination Scholarship Fund. This year’s Design-ACard contest had a total of 526 entries from schools/ students across Long Island.

Artists Win Awards AP art students representing Smithtown High Schools East and West won 18 different awards at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Congratulations to HSE students Andrew Chang, Luke Gelfman, Troy Hallahan, Rose Kong, Kristin Scomillio and Jamie Werner, as well as HSW students John Brunner,
John DeSousa, Iryna Divirak, Sari Friedman, Deilia Lewis, Griffin Reynolds, Sam Struzzieri and Bea Vera, who were honored in various categories including drawing, illustration, painting, photography and printmaking. Andrew and Rose each won three awards. Griffin, Iryna, John, Luke and Rose all won
