555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. The COPE Foundation, Inc. (“COPE”), a nonprofit grief and healing organization dedicated to helping parents and families living with the loss of a child, was named a Finalist in the Leadership Excellence Award category in The 4th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. Last year’s event attracted over 400 attendees from the nonprofit and business communities and an even larger crowd is expected this year. Winners will be announced LIVE at the awards gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016. Nominated organizations, their constituents and the Long Island business community are expected to attend. More than 135 entries were submitted for consideration in five categories, including Innovation, Leadership Excellence, Social Entrepreneurism, Rising Star, and Social Impact. The COPE Foundation is one of four finalists in the Leadership Excellence Award category for its President and Founder Lillian Julien. The death of a child is the most devastating loss. Yet Lillian Julien rose above the loss of her daughter Michelle in 1996 to found an organization whose purpose is to support other families living in similar circumstances. Shortly after Michelle’s death, Lillian’s daughter came to her in a dream letting her know she was okay but persuading her with the words, “you need to help each other.” Michelle’s message became Lillian’s mission—to create a healing center where parents and siblings

could come together for emotional support and a variety of healing modalities. But Lillian didn’t stop with a vision; she turned vision into reality. She first created a spiritual center within her temple, which later became COPE. Recognized as a 501(c) (3) organization in 1999, COPE has grown from a select group of families meeting in each other’s homes to a support network of over 1,000 families gathering and healing in generously donated space as well as a dedicated COPE House in Eisenhower Park. COPE helps bereaved parents, adult siblings and children heal after devastating losses through professionally-facilitated bereavement support groups; alternative healing therapies (like yoga, Reiki, Tai Chi, meditation, art and music therapy, and writing and spirituality workshops); professional workshops for mental health professionals, schools, clergy and funeral homes; a grief hotline; and Camp Erin® NYC, a bereavement camp for children ages 6-17 dealing with the loss of someone close to them, including concurrent parent camp. Lilly works actively on a daily basis to not only provide support to the COPE families who turn to her for that purpose, but also to guide and spread the word about COPE and its mission and to spearhead fundraising efforts. Lilly continues to be the driving force behind COPE, serving as board president, chief fundraiser and even facilitator of the organization’s art/creative expression workshops. She is also the author of GriefQuest, a workbook for grieving parents, and speaks at conferences across the country. In 2008, Lillian was inducted into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame under the auspices of the

Long Island Volunteer Center, and in 2014, she accepted the Roger E. Joseph prize from Hebrew Union College for her work with Camp Erin NYC. Previous recipients include Victor Kugler, who sheltered Anne Frank’s family, Rosa Parks and Daniel Pearl. “Lilly’s work has a definite social impact,” said Karen Flyer, COPE’s Executive Director. “Families who are able to heal from their profound grief are able to give back to their families, workplaces and society and mentor other families living with loss. Lillian’s innovative model for COPE empowers families who initially come for support to eventually become volunteers and stewards for the organization. The next level of healing is helping, and Lilly has both achieved that for herself, and inspired others within COPE to do the same.” Finalists were chosen by Long Island business professionals during preliminary judging. Members of the Awards’ Distinguished Judging Panel selected the Imagine Awards winners from among the Finalists during final judging. “Being named a Finalist in The Long Island Imagine Awards is an important achievement,” said Ken Cerini, Founder of the Long Island Imagine Awards. “It means that independent business executives have agreed that the nominee is worthy of recognition for their innovation, leadership, entrepreneurism, and sustainability. Suffolk County officials announced Thursday, March 24th the names of organizations that have been chosen to receive funds from the proceeds of the first annual Suffolk County Marathon. Nineteen organizations received awards ranging from $2,500 to $23,600 from the nearly $160,000 net proceeds from the September 13th, 2015 race. Recipients were chosen by the Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee, which assessed the needs of Suffolk County’s veteran population, established criteria for awarding funds to charitable registered 501(c)(3) organizations providing services to local Suffolk County veterans, and established priorities and develop a list of goals and objectives in order to rank applications. “With these awards, we can provide the services that our veterans need when they return home

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Steve Stern, the Long Island Ducks and New York Community Bank jointly announce the return of the Heroes of the Game program for the second consecutive season, which will publicly honor local veterans and active duty service men and women during all home games this season. More than 125 local veterans and active military personnel were honored during the 2015 season. “Suffolk County is home to nearly 100,000 veterans,

the largest veterans population in New York State. It is our obligation to provide our local heroes with the services they need once they come back home,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Heroes of the Game program is a wonderful way for thousands of local baseball fans each game to learn about our heroes’ stories and as a way to say thank you to our veterans for the sacrifices they have made to protect our freedom.” “The partnership between Suffolk County

Lace Up and Go On Wednesday, April 6th, countless numbers of Long Islanders will lace up their sneakers and walk to commemorate the annual American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. The Long Island Health Collaborative will be holding their National Walking Day event at Eisenhower Park at 9:30 a.m. A press event will be held at the Ice Rink followed by a walk around

the lake. Hundreds of walkers are expected. And this year, there’s a fun way to participate nationally: everyone who walks on April 6th can “donate” their minutes walked to the AHA by posting their minutes on social media at #AHALaceUp. All minutes posted there will count toward a national total goal of 100,000 minutes walked. Updates and highlights will be posted all day at

#AHALaceUp. Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for an individual’s overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. Broken down into weekly themes, the American

Heart Association will kick-off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by increasing their physical activity routines. Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get started. Because it’s easy, free and low-risk, walking is the simplest form of exercise you can do and the gateway exercise to other, more vigorous, activities. Week

In yet another partnership with County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Government, on April 1st 2016, LICADD launched a 24-hour assistance line where a live LICADD clinician can be reached to assist Long Islanders who are in need of services for substance use disorders (SUD). As the public health crisis continues to adversely impact a multitude of Long Island families and communities, LICADD is proud to offer 24 hour assistance to those individuals and families in need of support, counseling and referrals to quality healthcare facilities for a host of treatment options for substance use disorders. LICADD’s full-service

substance abuse hotline will serve as what officials called a lifeline to residents battling drug addiction, which lawmakers have been struggling to address across Long Island for years. To get there, the county teamed up with community partners in the substance abuse field to allow residents to call to get screenings, referrals and follow-ups. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will operate the 24-hour hotline and direct callers to those resources. Providing a single phone number to call for a myriad of resources and services is key to assisting those who are battling addiction and their families, officials said. “Like many places in this

country, Suffolk County is facing an opioid epidemic of historic proportions,” County Executive Steve Bellone said in a statement. “We need to tackle this epidemic on all fronts - including prevention, treatment and law enforcement.” Bellone said his administration has made it a top priority to “explore and launch new, evidence-based tools” to help address the region’s fight against heroin and opioid use. “The creation of a local 24/7 hotline is now another tool in our arsenal to assist those who are battling opioid and heroin addiction and their families,” he said. The hotline will become live by April 1st, Bellone said, and the Suffolk County health department

will provide oversight and analyze data to monitor its effectiveness and identify trends and emerging issues in the community. LICADD recognizes that individuals and families in crisis with SUD require immediate and quality support, assessment and referrals 24 hours a day. Long Island Game Farm Opens The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo officially opens for the season the weekend of Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th. Now in its 47th season, the park has long provided Long Island students and families with a wide array of animals, education, and most of all fun. As part of its opening celebrations, the zoo will once again have an array of baby animals in the nursery barn during its springtime hours. The Game Farm will be open from Thursday to Sunday, April 21st to 24th and Wednesday to Sunday from April 27th to May 1st. The park will be open on a limited schedule in early May and will ultimately

be open seven days a week beginning Wednesday, May 25th. For information regarding dates and hours of operation, please see the events calendar on the Game Farm’s website. In addition to hand feeding and petting its animals, the Game Farm is excited to announce its new Ranger Eric Live Animal Show, which is being held at 1 p.m. on May 14th and May 21st. Building a Better Workplace A genuine camaraderie among employees, morale-boosting and team building are some of the feelings heard from representatives of several companies who have joined the annual Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon. This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, April 30th, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY and 10K, half and full marathons on Sunday, May 1st, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. Imperial Commercial Cleaning (ICC), headquartered in West Babylon, has had more than thirty employees sign up to help raise money and awareness for Friends of Karen for the past five years. Last Hope Grant Received Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. today announced it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with several county shelters in Kentucky and Virginia to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. Besides assisting needy dogs in Long Island municipal shelters, Last Hope has developed a partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Since 1981, Last Hope has been striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets, and to provide community outreach services and spay/neuter initiatives for feral cats. Last Hope placed 260 dogs

and 575 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2015. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Southern dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, partner shelters like Daviess County in Kentucky have dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at Daviess were euthanized. Now the dog figure is much lower, less than 10 percent. “In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a hound named Valentine they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. By 2014,

we were working with three Kentucky and one Virginia shelter on a regular basis. In 2014, and again in 2015, we placed over one hundred dogs from these shelters. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Southern dogs, and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. Some are special needs dogs like Daisy a Black and Tan Coonhound who needed an eye removed due to glaucoma, and Henry a Redbone Coonhound who lost a leg after being hit by a car. Henry visits a nursing home with his owner as a therapy dog now. Five theater students from Smithtown High School East in the Smithtown Central School District participated in the Nassau Community College Honors Program’s Monologue Competition on March 19th. Ninthgrader Emily DeAugustino was awarded second place

in the 9th/10th grade division. Additional competitors included ninth-grader Katrina Nocerino, 11thgraders Dana Tortora, Max Sherman and Sarah Weynand, who were tasked with reciting a two-minute monologue of their choice (from a play, literary source

or an original piece) to fit the event theme, “What Matters?” Students were judged on the appropriateness to theme, clarity of expression, dramatic effectiveness, and thorough execution and overall presentation.

Taking the Top Spot Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West took home first and second place overall, respectively, in the Long Island Physics Olympics on March 23rd at Farmingdale State College. Smithtown’s two high school teams competed again 16 schools from across Long Island. In

addition to its first place overall finish, High School East finished first in Fermi Questions, second in Pendulum of Doom and second in Physics Bowl. High School East’s team included Sanjana Eranki, Andrew Tamis, Jake Taub, Brendan Volz and Ruisi Zhong. Second-place winner

During the month of March, Bretton Woods Elementary School students in Co-Teachers Danielle Sukoff’s and Elia Figari’s fourth class collected new baseballstyle hats for the Pediatric Department of Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “Chemotherapy treatments can cause children to lose their hair. Wearing a hat can help keep the children warm and also

help them to feel ‘normal’ during their treatment,” stated Sukoff. “Kids undergoing treatment do not want to stand out, they are kids just like everyone else. Getting a brand new baseball-style hat can be fun and cool.” Sukoff and Figari wanted to focus on the importance of manners and respect toward others with this initiative. “When speaking about manners, we thought about ways that we can be polite, kind and respectful.

NIGHT OF BASKETBALL - Forest Brook Elementary School staff, District administrators and Board of Education members joined together for a fun night of basketball with the talented, always entertaining Harlem Wizards on the Hauppauge High School Basketball Court. The game – which also featured Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy, Jr. as the referee – was a fundraiser coordinated by the PTA for Forest Brook.

School Gets the Nod Smithtown Central School District has been designated as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in America by the NAMM Foundation. The national program has put the spotlight on Smithtown and 475 other school districts that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 17th year, the

BCME program singles out districts for outstanding effort by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders. This is the third year Smithtown has received the distinction. “We are very fortunate to have a strong music program that continues to thrive in Smithtown,” said Michael Mastrangelo, Smithtown Central School

District’s director of fine arts K-12. “Because of this, our community has once again been recognized by the NAMM Foundation.” The BCME program evaluates schools and districts based on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction.

HUNTING FOR MATH - Fourth-graders in Judy Crespo’s and Steve Jackowski’s classes at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District improved their math problem-solving skills during an Easter egg hunt. Eggs were hidden outside around the playground equipment, and students hunted until they found an egg. The eggs contained a math word problem and some goodies. HEROES HONORED - Kings Park resident Joseph Cartelli and Suffolk County Police Officer Matthew Funaro were recognized by Suffolk County Legislators Rob Trotta and William Spencer for their heroic efforts for helping to rescue an elderly woman from a fire in her home. Mr. Cartelli was working at the home when a fire broke out upstairs. Officer Funaro responded and the two carried the woman, who uses a wheelchair, to safety. She was then transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
