Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers
bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,
for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco is pleased to announce that the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed 43 recruits from Class 16-156 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Thursday, March 23rd. DeMarco said, “Corrections is a tough and dangerous career, but it is also very fulfilling
for those who have the compassion necessary for public service, and who serve with integrity, honor, and courage.” Correction Officers must complete a rigorous thirteen week training program at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau. During their Academy instruction, all officer candidates must complete intensive training, which includes
classroom and field instruction, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. Correction Officer recruits are also required to complete a community service class project. Class 16-156 conducted a collection effort for Happy Tails Dog Rescue in Smithtown.

Exploring Motion
Bretton Woods Elementary School students in Elia Figari’s and Danielle Sukoff’s fourth grade class recently participated in a Balloon Lab that explored Newton’s Third Law of Motion: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” The students worked in teams to create balloon rockets using a balloon,
straw, meter stick and string. After the students assembled their balloon rockets, they completed three trials to measure how far their rocket would travel down the length of the string. As the air in the balloon was released, the force pushed the balloon down the string to a waiting team member on the other end of the string. The students recorded the
time and length that the balloon traveled along the string for each trial. They then discussed Newton’s Third Law of Motion in their groups and also applied it to a scenario with a baseball hitting a bat. “The students had a great time and were able to see Newton’s Law of Motion in action through this hands-on experience,” the teachers stated!
Math Fun Night The Smithtown High School West Math Honor Society hosted their 13th annual Math Fun Night at Smithtown West High School on March 16th. Smithtown Central
School District students in grades four through eight were invited to learn about different applications of math and science through many interactive events throughout the night.
Smithtown students were able to build their own lands in an augmented reality sandbox, stick their hand through a bubble wall, and even got to see a hovercraft in action.

Volunteer Efforts Smithtown High School West seniors Courtney Grafstein and Gianna Buttitta were recently honored for their exemplary volunteer service efforts. Grafstein was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and a President’s Volunteer Service Award granted by the program on behalf of
the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Buttitta was also honored with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program granted the award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their
communities and their country. Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors young people across America for outstanding volunteer service.

Ethics Bowl Honorees Hauppauge High School’s Ethics Bowl Club won the coveted Robert Ladenson Spirit of the Ethics Bowl Award at the 8th annual Long Island High School Ethics Bowl Competition that recently was held at Hofstra University. This prestigious honor was awarded to the team that displayed outstanding skill at listening to one another in an atmosphere of civility and mutual respect – allowing for passionate disagreement on principles, while nonetheless encouraging continued dialogue.
Students in the Ethics Bowl Club examine ethical case studies published annually by the Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Teams from across the nation prepare the same cases, thereby allowing for a collegial and competitive atmosphere. The students work hard to prepare ethical arguments and also to implement philosophical theories into their dialogue in advance of the competition. Pines Elementary School’s Annual Talent Show – Pines Got Talent – was a huge success raising more than $10,000 for Makenzie Cadmus, a Hauppauge community member in need. “As always, the Pines students enjoyed sharing their talents, while caring for others in our community,” stated Principal Dr. Claudine DiMuzio. More than 70 students participated in the show as cast and crew and over 800 people attended the annual

Members of the Manhasset Junior Coalition, the youth arm of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, recently visited the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program to present a check for $10,000 to support the Adelphi program’s educational forums. After meeting with staff and breast cancer survivors in Garden City, a Junior Coalition member Charlotte Ryan said, “It was incredible to hear what the volunteers at the Adelphi support center do for women diagnosed with breast cancer. It made me proud to be able to help them in any way that we can.” This was echoed by another volunteer Nicole Pullano who said, “Going
to Adelphi and learning about the program helped us learn how much of a difference we are making and how every little bit helps.” The Junior Coalition of MWCABC was formed in 2003 as a charitable organization for Manhasset teenage girls. Elise Dadourian, Junior Coalition coordinator, says their purpose is to provide education and awareness about breast cancer at a teenage appropriate level without fear, to generate compassion and understanding for those afflicted with the disease and the family and friends affected by it, and to join together to raise funds for breast cancer research and patient support programs. Says Hillary Rutter, the
executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, “These young women set an admirable example of community service.” The funds are being used to support educational programs such as “Feel Better and Have More Energy After Breast Cancer” on May 1st and “Using Mindfulness and Meditation to Cope with Breast Cancer” on May 22nd, both held at Adelphi in Garden City.
