How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials - resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers? The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that
enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding wellknown cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the
shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

This change in routine leads to many questions from children who want to know why they can’t attend school or spend time with their friends. The New York State Office of Mental Health offers several suggestions for parents speaking to their kids about coronavirus. - Think about and rehearse scripts for discussing coronavirus with their children. Kids take cues from caregivers about how anxious they should be about a topic. - Discuss the situation openly. This year it may be possible to combine a love for lamb with a love for grilling. This recipe for “Grilled Rosemary Lamb Chops” from Peggy Knickerbocker’s “Simple Soirées: Seasonal Menus for Sensational Dinner Parties” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) gives Easter dinner hosts the opportunity to prepare the meal over an open flame, adding

Note: You can use goodquality, low-salt kosher chicken stock cubes or bouillon powder, but the recipe above for homemade broth is recommended. For the dumplings: 7 ounces medium matzo meal (about 8 matzo sheets, ground up) 3 eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 3 grindings of black pepper 2 pinches of salt First, make the broth. Put the carcass in a large pot and cover with about 21⁄2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns, return to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Strain, reserving the broth. Make the dumplings by
mixing all the dumpling ingredients together, then knead until you have a smooth dough, adding a little water if necessary. Cover and let rest for at least 3 hours. Using your hands, form the mixture into balls the size of apricots. To put it all together, bring the chicken broth up to simmering point. Drop in the dumplings and continue simmering, covered, for 30 minutes. If you don’t have a chicken carcass, boil a whole chicken for the soup and use the meat in other dishes. Traditionally, a boiling fowl from a kosher butcher would be used. Health note: This is the famous “Jewish penicillin” beloved of every mother and grandmother. It’s not an old wives’ tale; there’s good scientific evidence that it contains vitamins, minerals and other natural chemicals that are antibacterial and immune-boosting. In addition, nutrients and valuable plant chemicals are extracted from the vegetables and herbs during the cooking process, most of which end up as active ingredients in the finished soup.

Passover is a Jewish festival that commemorates the story of Exodus. In that story, ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, and men, women and children of Jewish heritage celebrated that liberation during Passover, a seven or eight day festival that is one of the more widely observed Jewish holidays. Passover celebrations begin on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nisan. That day typically falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. One of the symbols of Passover is matzo, an unleavened flatbread made from flour and water. Though matzo is an enduring symbol of Passover, that does not mean it cannot be enjoyed at other times of the year. In fact, those who want to celebrate their Jewish heritage or even those who simply want to experience Jewish culture can enjoy matzo throughout the year. It’s even possible to get a little creative with matzo. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” from Michael van Straten’s “The Healthy Jewish Cookbook” (Frog, Ltd.). This delicious recipe can be a part of your Passover celebration or just a meal to sit down and enjoy with family and friends.

Passover Celebration Passover is a celebration of the liberation of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Along with Sukkot and Shavuot, Passover is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals that feature agricultural offerings and several unique mitzvot. The seder, an elaborate meal that customarily takes place on the first night of the holiday, is
at the center of Passover celebrations. According to ReformedJudaism. org, “seder” means “order” and refers to the 15 separate steps that are taken in traditional order as expressed in the book “Haggaddah.” Blessing, washing, eating a vegetable, breaking of matzot, story telling, and many other components
comprise the seder. Other traditional symbols are featured on the seder plates and tables, each of which have specific ties to the Exodus and history of Jewish slavery. Passover is one of the most commonly observed Jewish holidays and a time to reflect on one’s blessings.

Finding Faith During Easter
To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.
For many Christians, modern Easter celebrations would not be complete without bonnets, bunnies and colored eggs. As fun as those components can be, Christianity is at the heart of Easter, which is the most important date on the Christian religious calendar. Easter Sunday marks the culmination of events that shaped the beliefs and teachings of an entire faith. Easter marks the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which Christians believe occurred within days of his crucifixion and burial. The New Testament indicates that the Resurrection of Jesus is one of the chief tenets of the Christian faith and established Jesus as the Son of God. Easter is an example that God will righteously judge the world by sacrificing His son for the sins of others. And any person who chooses
to follow Jesus receives everlasting life thanks to Christ’s Resurrection. Easter is linked to the Jewish celebration of Passover due to its proximity on the calendar and the fact that Jesus was Jewish. The Bible states that Jesus participated in the Passover meal during The Last Supper. At The Last Supper, Jesus identified the matzo (bread) and wine as his body and blood, soon to be sacrificed and shed. Christians believe The Last Supper marked the first transubstantiation, or the turning of bread and wine into the actual substance of Christ’s body and blood. This also was the first celebration of the Eucharist and Holy Mass that would become another core component of the Christian faith. Easter is a time of great celebration that is preceded by Lent, a weeklong period of reflection, prayer and
repentance. The days immediately prior to Easter are commonly referred to as Holy Week. This encompasses Palm Sunday and lasts through Holy Thursday (the day of The Last Supper), Good Friday (when Jesus was crucified and placed in the tomb), and Holy Saturday (the 40-hour-long vigil that the followers of Jesus Christ held after his death and burial). On Easter Sunday, four women, including Mary Magdalene, went to Christ’s tomb to anoint his body with spices and oils. They found the tomb was empty and were met with an angel who told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. A biblical account in John 20:14-16 indicates that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak with the risen Jesus. She mistakes Jesus for a gardener and says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” In regard to his apostles Simon and Peter who were the first to see the risen Christ. Easter is a time of joy and celebration, and a great opportunity for Christians to immerse themselves in their faith.

Local Scouts Participate at NYS Assembly in Albany

Suffolk County Council (BSA)’s representatives participated at the annual New York State of the State in Albany on February 24, 2020. The youth members and their adult volunteer leaders of the Scouts BSA Troops participated in this event and were given a tour of the NYS Capitol. The scouts presented the legislature with an update on how well scouting is serving the Suffolk County community and each of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers had a chance to speak to the NYS representatives as they shared this information. The 19 youth members and their ten adult Scouting leaders (among others scouts from NY State) had a lunch in the Legislative Building and took a photo with Senator Martinez following a tour of the Capitol Building. The Scouts and Adult leaders listened to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, as well as Senator John Flanagan and Senator Monica Martinez speak about their support for the Scouting

During the ceremonies at the NYS Assembly, the scouts were recognized when they presented the State of the Boy Scouts in Suffolk County Council (BSA). They presented on the state of Scouting in all of New York - youth members served, community hours given, and projects completed for community organizations. In addition, youth heard from leaders about the importance of of community service and how being actively involved will serve them throughout their lives. Youth had a chance to meet and greet and take photos with various leaders. Instilling a lifelong love of reading is the main objective of the Book Club at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District. Run by English teacher Marissa LoSardo, the club works to promote a love of reading in their school community. Using social media, the club shares many of the popular books they are reading with their school community. Students in the clubs do book reviews
and conduct interviews with teachers and students who are “readers of the week,” sharing information about their current favorite title. To show how reading can also be fun, they promote their favorite titles and use their club time to share why they love their current reading selections with members.
