Arrow Of Light Honorees Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta attended the Kings Park Cub Scout Pack 379 Blue & Gold Banquet where eight scouts were awarded the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, earned by Webelos, who are now eligible to join a

Boy Scout Troop. In order to achieve this level in cub scouting, each young man must be active in their dens for at least six months and earn the following badges: Webelos, Fitness, Citizen, Readyman, and Outdoorsman, as well as

four elective badges and complete the Honesty Character Connection. Legislator Trotta congratulated the cub scouts on their accomplishments and wished them much success in their future scouting endeavors.

Smithtown High School East senior Brian Righter was awarded first place in the Microbiology category at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair held on March 12th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. As a result, Brian will represent Smithtown and the Long Island region at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this May. Six others from Smithtown were recognized at LISEF, including a thirdplace winner from Smithtown High School West. Brian won for his paper titled, “Designing a Genetic CRISPR-cas Detection Probe for Adherent-Invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) Utilizing Comparative Genomics,” a result of his work at Stony Brook University under the direction of professors Dr. Ellen Li and Dr. Grace Gathungu. He was awarded the prestigious Simons Summer Fellowship to conduct research at the university last summer. The program gives academically talented high school students the opportunity to engage in hands-on research in science, math or engineering while working with distinguished faculty mentors. A participant in the HSE Science Research Program, Brian investigated the relationship of a subset of E. coli

to inflammatory bowel disease. IBD has negative health consequences as well as an annual cost of $1.7 billion in healthcare expenses. Brian investigated the use of certain genes as biomarkers for IBD and more specifically for Crohn’s Disease. Finding a genetic biomarker would enable easier detection of the disease, avoid the use of

invasive procedures, and allow for future, larger studies. Brian recently presented his research to the Smithtown CSD Board of Education with his science research program coordinator Maria Zeitlin and HSE Principal Edwin Thompson in the audience. He was given a

Certificate of Recognition from Board of Education President Christopher Alcure and Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane for his outstanding work. His ability to speak to a general audience about his research is rivaled by none, and I consider him to be a wonderful ambassador of science!” Brian competed in two rigorous qualification rounds to earn the LISEF first-place award and the trip to ISEF. According to the Society for Science & the Public, ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, with 1,700 students from over 70 countries showcasing their independent research and competing for more than $5 million in various awards.

Innovation Honored The Smithtown Children’s Foundation has awarded Accompsett Middle School a $500 grant, due largely to the efforts of library media specialist Donna DeLuca and the school’s innovative use of its digital media lab. DeLuca, who launched and advises the AMS Digital Media Club, was presented with a check by SCF Executive Board member Chris Fitzgerald with AMS Principal Paul McNeil and members of the club present in the library’s green room. The AMS DMC is recognized for its weekly news broadcasts, interviews, virtual tour lessons and other interesting curriculum

projects that infuse the latest available technology. Many of these projects are video recorded in the green room. “With more than 50 students enrolled, it was clear that the DMC was something students were interested in,” said Fitzgerald in her announcement of the award. “It gives them alternative ways to express themselves and to apply what they learn in the classroom in a real world setting. Donna gave us numerous applications for the lab’s use – from newscasts, to podcasts, radio and talk shows – and students can even create music using Garage Band.

The Long Island based credit union NEFCU announced today the 2015 recipients of its annual Making A Difference college scholarship program, granting a total of $12,500 to 10 local college students. The scholarship program recognizes students currently enrolled at accredited universities, colleges and community colleges who have succeeded in both their classrooms and communities. Those eligible for the scholarships must be members of NEFCU or related to a member. Since the establishment of the Making A Difference scholarship program, over 10 years ago, students have been awarded over $1,000,000 in grants. “NEFCU is proud to continue the tradition of offering a scholarship program for our members and their families. We believe that investing in education produces great returns,” said Valerie
