T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Did you know that senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world? The number of Americans 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Michael, a Plainview resident. Michael wished for a record player and vinyl records. The Twilight Wish Foundation happily granted his wish, and as far as the records go, he received two of his favorites! Michael had worked in insurance and took an early train into the city every morning, returning home late at night. By the time he retired, he was ready for senior living accommodations. However, retirement did not stop his desire to volunteer. Prepandemic he worked closely to help people who were lower functioning/ had dementia. During the pandemic,

PSEG Long Island is improving the reliability of the energy grid in the Town of Smithtown. This is one of many system improvements included in the “Power On” program. “PSEG Long Island is committed to making every effort to ensure our grid is resilient during storms,” said Peggy Keane, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Construction and Operations Services. “This infrastructure improvement project in Smithtown is part of our ongoing, multiyear work to improve electric reliability for our customers.” Beginning in mid-March and lasting approximately seven months, PSEG Long Island licensed and approved contractors will work along approximately 5.77 miles of mainline distribution lines in the Smithtown area. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, ﬂaggers and signage at the work sites as needed. Local officials will be notified in advance regarding any traffic concerns. The storm-hardening improvements include: · Stronger Poles: PSEG Long Island will replace some existing utility poles with stronger, more durable poles that are capable of withstanding winds up to 135 mph. The new poles will be approximately the same height as the existing poles, have a stronger base and will be placed no more than 5 feet from the current pole locations. PSEG Long Island will actively coordinate the removal of old poles with other utilities and municipalities. · Narrow Profiles: To help wires deﬂect falling limbs instead of catching them, PSEG Long Island will be installing shorter cross arms atop some poles. · Stronger Wire: Current

In the 1640s, the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area. Today, their family farm tradition continues as Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, which is run by both Amy and Jennifer Halsey. Both Amy and Jennifer received agricultural educations and returned to the farm after college. Amy manages the retail store, helps design gardens, custom designs planters and more. Jenn is on the farm growing the crops. She once had even been named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas. At their farm they grow apples, peaches, pumpkins, blueberries, pears and table grapes. Many value-added products are made from their produce, including fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple and pumpkin pies and more. With the help of their dedicated staff, this family farm continues many traditions, while also trying new ideas to grow the business! Running a farm is no easy task, but Amy and Jennifer make it seem so! Visit their farm for a great experience on the East End.

Rhonda Klch is the Executive Director and Founder of Equity First, which was formed in 2004. This organization provides financial education, literacy and best practices to the community at low or no cost. Financial decisions are based on emotional scenarios, often times leading to clients making poor choices and decisions in regards to their future. Equity First creates and implements an approved client plan until the desired result is achieved. Their programs include money management, budget reviews, financial well check, credit restoration, debt settlement, bankruptcy consulting, loss mitigation services and more. Each service is paired with ongoing consultations to ensure a thorough understanding of timelines, expectations and benchmarks. Rhonda and her team are making an incredible impact in the Long Island community. In addition to financially assisting others, during the pandemic they have also given locals in need food, gift cards, personal hygiene products and more.

Lisa Gatti is the Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and the mother of her 13 year old daughter, who is the pride and joy of her life. Her passion for horses and teaching began at a very young age. In college, she was the captain of the equestrian team and she graduated with a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education. She has supplemented her education throughout the years by taking other educational programs. In 1996 and 2000, Lisa was named as US Team Leader for the US Equestrian Paralympic Team in Atlanta, Georgia and Sydney, Australia. From 2008-2013 Lisa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAGALA, the global standard for equine assisted psychotherapy and personal development. In 2015, Lisa was named to the Board of Autism Communities. Most recently in 2019, she was appointed to the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Committee to help local government identify the most crucial issues facing our special needs population. She was honored with the 2020 Woman of Distinction and Distinguished Service Award from The Town of Islip, is a current finalist for the Imagine Awards for the Leadership Excellence Category and just received the 2021 Circle Of Excellence Award from the Long Island Business News. Throughout the pandemic, she still sees the greatness around her everyday and believes that when we see it in others, we know it, and when we trust its presence in ourselves, we embody it.

Eileen Scanlon has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years. She has worked with Corporate America, Non Profits, Academia and local grass-roots organizations. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Instilling A Love Of Languages

National Car Care Month in April is the time of year to give vehicles some extra attention. Basic car care is the key to a longlasting investment, improving its safety and dependability, says the Car Care Council. “Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Following a routine maintenance program makes financial sense, extending useful vehicle life and helping avoid costly repairs down the road.”

Smithtown High School West world language students and staff decorated the department’s tower in celebration of National Foreign Language Week from March 7-13. Both classroom doors and the hallway walls were decorated to represent different aspects of all the cultures studied at the school. The world language curriculum at Smithtown High School West infuses the culture into the language studies. The

goal is to instill a love of language, and languages, said lead language teacher Ana Tiburcio. “We are working to encourage the students in their language study beyond high school,” she said. “We are promoting the importance of learning a foreign language.” To that end, the students watched TikTok videos of people doing the “polyglot challenge,” speaking in several different languages. The students also received messages from faculty members throughout the

building greeting them in different languages. Students created videos that were linked to QR codes around the tower that showcased their language skills. March Madness-style posters were also created with different brackets. French students used poets while German and Spanish used music as their brackets. After reading a poem or listening to a song, the winning vote would move on to the next bracket.

Her poem, which she is currently working to transform into a song, won an Award of Merit for Literature at the school level. James H. Boyd Intermediate School third grader Sally Ferruzzi was also recognized at the meeting for winning a New York State Reﬂections Award of Excellence in Composition. Her original song, “Hearts,” performed on the ukulele, focuses on how while we are all different, we all have hearts and should work together for a brighter future. Sally will move on to the National PTA Reﬂections competition. The last student to be recognized was ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High

School senior Christopher Addeo, who also won a New York State Reﬂections Award of Excellence in Composition. For his submission, Christopher used MuseScore computer software to compose an original song and orchestra piece titled “A Burning Passion.” He will also move on to compete at the national level. Christopher, who has been composing music since eighth grade, was one of only 60 students to be accepted to the prestigious Gallitin School of Individualized Study at New York University where he intends to study industrial psychology and data science. The Elwood School District congratulates these students and wishes them much luck in pursuing their passions in the future.

8 Tips For Dyeing Easter Eggs Coloring eggs is a beloved Easter tradition. Eggs long have been symbols of fertility and rebirth, making them fitting icons for spring.
