Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales. “New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm. While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19.
In preparation for Easter, the Walt Whitman Shops is offering an opportunity for local children to have fun and give back to charity during their annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event will take place on Sunday April 14th at 9am. Tickets are $5 per child and all proceeds will be donated to Birthday Wishes of Long Island. Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!
Birthday Wishes relies heavily on donations of toys from generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations.

The Mercy Inn is an amazing soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one ever leaves their soup kitchen hungry. They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people. enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s dozen Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. They teach biology, chemistry, earth science, English, government, history, Italian, math, Music, 7th-Grade Science, and coach cross country. The winners teach in Baldwin, Brentwood, Commack, East Hampton, Garden City, Huntington, Jericho, Manhasset, Port Washington, and Syosset in grades seven to twelve. Commack High School teachers have been well represented in recent years by Harvard’s Distinguished Teacher Award program for their excellence both in the classroom and as lifelong mentors to their students. Derek Pope, a Town of Smithtown resident and Math teacher at Commack High School, has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2019” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. Derek Pope will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on March 30, along with eleven other teachers from across Long Island. Harvard Professor Matthew Baum will speak on “The Fourth Estate and the Current Political Climate,” exploring how the media performed in their role as watchdog of democracy, with a focus on the period leading up to and since the 2016 presidential election. Mr. Pope obtained undergrad and graduate degrees from Seton Hall University and SUNY Stony Brook, respectively. In addition to his dedication to the students at Commack High School, he is an Adjunct Professor for Math Education at SUNY Stony Brook. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Pope is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys skiing, hiking and travel experiences in his free time. At the ceremony on March 30, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teacher of 2019 who will also receive a scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, MA. The Mesozoic Era classroom sessions. The second-grade classes started the day with an assembly where learned about fossils, dinosaur species, why they became extinct and Lisaius’ work in the field of paleontology. Back in the classrooms and with a toolbox full of treasures, Lisaius visited
each of the individual second-grade classes for an informative hands-on session featuring relics of the past. Students touched different artifacts – some dating back millions of years – including dinosaur horns, claws, teeth and fossilized rocks.

Get Ready: Early Spring Landscaping Tips D uring the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of their window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes, no doubt, dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season.
One of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another frosty day.
Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler

The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable. A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz found that more than 4,500 users were planning a landscape update. In addition, 56 percent of homeowners surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining.

Explore the Emerald Isle YOUNG ENGINEERS - Students in Sean Tomasello’s Project Lead the Way introduction to engineering design class at Smithtown High School West are designing cams using Autodesk Inventor to provide a specified motion. After the design phase is complete, the students create a physical model using a full spectrum laser cutter and test their design to compare the results against the desired outcome. In most homes, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and build up in the ductwork. NADCA sets the industry

How Do I Top That? After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that? Have you ever felt that way? You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?” Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there. Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people
confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time. It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot. It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations? So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own
expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as
paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s
green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush
cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any wax. Cartons are made mainly from paper with

Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for
