The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI), the leading organization for providing quality mentoring opportunities for Long Island’s youth, held its 10th Annual Mentoring Matters Conference, presented by AT&T, on March 13th-14th at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. MPLI partner, and Mentoring Matters Conference Title Sponsor, AT&T, kicked off the twoday conference with a $20,000 check presented to MPLI, along with key elected officials, and LIU Post representatives in support of youth mentoring programs. The Mentoring Matters Conference two-day conference brought together participants and advocates from Long Island’s youth mentoring community, who participated in educational sessions and workshops designed to further their involvement in mentoring programs. The conference included a Professional Development Day for mentors and advocates and a Youth Day for middle and high school mentees and peer mentors. “Each year, hundreds of mentees and mentors attend the Mentoring Matters Conference to learn and be inspired about the peer mentoring process and deepen their understanding of the unique role mentoring plays in a youth’s life,” says Jean Lahage Cohen, Executive Director, The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island. “We are very thankful to AT&T for their continued support of our mission and for helping make this conference possible. We are also equally grateful to LIU Post for their generous donation of their campus for the past 10 years.” AT&T’s title sponsorship of the annual Mentoring Matters Conference comes on the heels of its recently announced partnership with MPLI on the February, 2014 opening of the AT&T / MPLI Regional Training Room in Huntington. At the training facility, MPLI offers Mentoring Academy classes and workshops in the AT&T regional facility. AT&T is an advocate for youth mentoring through its national ASPIRE program that is committed to investing $350 million in youth education. “AT&T is committed to supporting our nation’s youth through its national ASPIRE program and by forming strong partnerships with local programs throughout the country, including the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island,” said Marissa Shorenstein, New York State president, AT&T. “We

tips to students as they prepare for the college admissions interview: Do spend time reflecting on yourself as a candidate for admission. The interviewer might want to learn more about your reasons for wanting to attend the college and the components of your background that would make you an ideal fit. There are no wrong answers in an admissions interview, since the interviewer simply wants to get to know you better. However, the more you prepare, the more polished you will come across. Don’t present yourself as someone different than the real you. While you might feel tempted to embellish your résumé or act in a way you think might impress the interviewer, it is better to be honest about who you are and what you have to offer. That may even mean discussing lessons you have learned from challenges or failures.
Do act professionally. You should treat the admissions interview as a chance to share your goals, educational journey, future plans and excitement about the college. Although the interviewer wants you to feel comfortable, treat this interview as you would a job interview. Come ready to answer a variety of questions about yourself in a direct and clear way. Don’t be aloof or act too casual. Avoid cracking jokes, using inappropriate language or sharing too much personal information. Relax and be yourself, but remember that this is still an interview for college admission. Do be prepared to ask questions. There is a good chance that you will be asked if you have any questions. Do your research about the college and the program or programs in which you are interested and develop a list of questions before your interview. Have them
ready just in case. Don’t waste valuable interview time asking about things you could learn elsewhere. While there may be time allotted for questions, choose those questions wisely. You could easily find out about the admissions process and extracurricular activities on the college’s website. “The admissions interview is a great opportunity and should not be a source of anxiety,” Huntington reminds students. “Look on the college’s website for any interview guidelines or tips, spend time preparing for the interview, and most important, put your very best foot forward.” For more tips on effective interviewing, admissions success and more, contact Huntington Learning Center at 1.800. It’s college application time and your teen has taken the SAT or ACT, kept up his or her grades, written a stellar essay and completed all college applications. There is one more piece to the college admissions puzzle that could potentially gain your teen the acceptance he or she seeks: the college admissions interview. “Not all colleges require a college admissions interview, but many of the competitive institutions do, as do some colleges’ departments or schools that require secondary admission,” says Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center. “The admissions interview intimidates many prospective students, but we encourage them to approach this as an opportunity to put a face to a name, make a good impression and articulate face-to-face why they would be a great student at the college.” Huntington offers a few

Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.
Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.
This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

The 4th Annual All Kids Fair takes place on Sunday, April 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott - Long Island. The event is dedicated to bringing together individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations with children from birth through high school age and their families. The All Kids Fair is part education and activities expo and part health and wellness fair. In over 80 exhibitor spaces, many available programs and services will be presented, including after school activities, birthday party ideas, schools, camps, health and wellness products and services, special needs, financial services, day cares, and tutoring. In four speaker rooms, some classes will be focused on the adults and others will be geared towards children. Topics for the adults include childhood
obesity and treatments for varicose veins from pregnancy. Classes for the children and their families to enjoy together include music, crafts, and fitness classes. For their attendees’ convenience, a new addition to this year’s event is free valet parking. Also, QuackerJack of the Long Island Ducks will be visiting and taking photos with the kids. Many non-profits will be participating in this year’s event. Those who bring non-perishable food to benefit The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) will receive raffle tickets to win desirable prizes, such as Long Island Ducks tickets. Penelope’s Odyssey will once again offer simple cheek swabbing of adults for the lifesaving National Bone Marrow Registry. At last year’s event, Lori Schneider of Penelope’s Odyssey shared that she “enjoyed the day and all
the people we met. I am amazed at how many wonderful businesses and organizations you had represented.” Last year, 26 altruistic people were swabbed, and she hopes to beat that number this year. Other non-profits include the American Airpower Museum and Huntington YMCA. Long Island Parent Magazine, Your Local Kids Source, LongIsland.com, and Long Island Island Center for Vein Treatment sponsor this year’s All Kids Fair. Tickets for ages 3 and up are only $5, no charge for 2 and under, and there is free admission for grandparents when accompanied by parent and child with tickets. Game Farm To Open bottle-feeding. There are even special areas within the farm, including popular “Bambiland,” where children get up close and personal with deer; and “Old MacDonald’s Farm,” where children get a glimpse of life on an actual farm with pigs and chickens. For almost half a century, children have been leaving the Game Farm with acquired knowledge and a smile from ear to ear. Opening Day — Saturday, April 12th — coincides with the start of many Long Island schools’ spring break. The Game Farm will be open the entire break (ending on April 20) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, the Game Farm will reopen the next weekend, April 26th and 27th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well. Beginning in May, the Long Island Game Farm will be open Thursday through Sunday. Beginning May 22nd, the

Most importantly, this competition is a fun and exciting means of showing students that they can accomplish anything they envision, if they put great effort towards it.” This season, students participating in FIRST Robotics are eligible to apply for more than $18 million in scholarships from 200 universities throughout the country. Over a six-week timeframe, students work with
professional engineering mentors to design a robot using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these students create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the ability of each robot, the power of collaboration, teamwork, and the determination of students. On Thursday, March 20th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Hannes Baumann, Research and Adjunct Professor, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, speaking about climate change and global warming. He noted that scientists are watching especially the Artic, where warming appears to be increasing 10 times faster than elsewhere, and where there has been an alarming reduction of Arctic land and sea ice between 1980-2010. He also pointed out the latest “bombshell” regarding the Labrador tundra mass, where new melting is resulting in the appearance of plant growth areas that were not ice-free for at least 44,000 years. Hannes, using graphs and charts in addition to photographic evidence, pointed out by decades the changes in the world’s coastal temperatures. Our
latitudes are warming faster than anywhere else. Surprisingly, the North is warming, while the South is cooling. The influence of the Gulfstream is getting measurably weaker. The coastal Pacific region is experiencing cooling. Scientists do not yet understand exactly why these radical changes are taking place so fast, but they point to the memorable recent effects of climate
change that they are studying, such as the ongoing Texas drought, the devastating 2010 wildfires in Russia, Hurricane Sandy, and the freak storms currently causing devastation in Western Europe, as they continue to seek answers to and remedies for such events. Fisheries Biology and Biological Oceanography at the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel (19952001), subsequently finding his research subjects in diverse marine areas such as the Baltic Sea, the Bays of Newfoundland, the Great Barrier Reef, or the American Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Since joining Stony Brook University in 2008, his research has primarily been focused on natural and man-made reasons for ubiquitous changes in marine fish abundance, growth and population characteristics. He is particularly interested in studying principles of short and long term adaptation of marine organisms to temperature change, ocean acidification, and commercial fishing all of which will help to better anticipate the great ecological restructuring that we are witnessing in the age of the Anthropocene. Nesting Bald Eagles Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy preserved this land as a secure nesting area
for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.” Edged in white by 12-miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of Shelter Island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic Bay.” “The fact that bald eagles are nesting at Mashomack speaks to the value of preserved land and its significance for wildlife,” said Michael Laspia, Director of Mashomack Preserve. “We couldn’t be
happier that our national bird is gracing us with its presence –and we hope this majestic species has a successful season rearing its young here.” Mashomack was purchased by The Nature Conservancy 34 years ago, in an effort to stop development of this nearly pristine peninsula and to protect an important concentration nesting ospreys along the northeast coast. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder and subsists mainly on fish, although capable of catching live fish bald eagles are primarily scavengers feeding on dead fish found on the beach or stolen from ospreys. Juried Photography Exhibition The Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce its 33rd Annual Juried Photography Exhibition, which will be on view at the Mills Pond House Gallery Saturday, April 5th through Sunday, May 4th. The works chosen for this exhibit reveal the greatest combination of the artist’s medium with their subject and will feature Encaustic on Pigment Print, Kallitype, Cyanotype, Gold-toned Argyrotype, Gold-toned Albumen, Wet Plate Collodion, Tintype, Ambrotype with Collage, and Liquid Emulsion on Vellum over Copper Leaf among other processes. First Place was awarded to Greg Sand of Tennessee for his Ambrotype with Collage work titled Void. Second Place was awarded to Eric Nelson of Wisconsin for his Wet Plate Collodion, on Aluminum work titled Beth: Plate for Praxinoscope. Magna Cum Laude with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania on May 18th, 2008. As she left the graduation with her parents, an 18 year-old man talking on his cell phone was paying more attention to his phone conversation than his driving environment and failed to notice a red light. As he entered the intersection, a tractor trailer swerved to miss him and hit the Good family’s car full-force. The impact killed her parents instantly and severely injured Good, who was given about a 10
percent chance of surviving the night. She defied the odds and slowly recovered from her injuries. Since then, Good has worked tirelessly to educate people across the country about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. She previously has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, been a guest of the United Nations Secretary General, featured as a “Hero Among Us” in People magazine as well as been featured in numerous articles, television and radio news pieces and press conference nationwide.

With less than forty school days of my senior year left, I am beginning to understand why people are always talking about savoring the moment. As a high school senior, I am very excited to be “in the home stretch,” even though this means that I am one step closer to leaving my home, my school and my family. With just about four months before I leave, I find myself spending more time with my brother. Lately, we have been bonding over the simplest things. Perhaps, this is because he will be sad when I
leave for college, like my mom predicts; however I have my own theory. I believe that I am the one who will miss him when I leave for college! As the primary agent of my socialization for these past seventeen years, my family has had a ridiculous impact on my personality. My brother, more than anyone, has shaped my life. He is the peanut butter to my jelly; my little brother has always been there for me. Even though I am counting down the days before I hit the road, I am well aware that my days with family
are numbered. I know that I am going to miss them. Even though I will love college, I will miss playing catch with my little brother on the front lawn. I will miss my mom’s cooking, and I will miss my dad’s antics. As I cross off each day on the calendar of my high school career, I can say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my friends and family. When I start the next chapter of my life, I will not forget the memories that have been formed or the bonds that I have made with my friends, and most importantly, my brother.

Culinary Competition A team of five Hauppauge Middle School students recently captured 2nd place in the annual Whole Foods Jr. Iron Chef Competition this past weekend. Known as the “Wild Whiskers,” Timmy Cullen, Owen Kells, Carly Lam, Kaitlyn Moletti and Brandon Sandow, spent
months developing and perfecting their original recipes in the Middle School’s FACS Room Test Kitchen. The Wild Whiskers cooked and presented their original recipes for Crispy Potato Patties, Sweet Salsa and Whole Grain Tortilla Chips and Hummus for the Whole
Food judges – earning the team an impressive 2nd place ranking. “I am so proud of these students for their outstanding creativity, culinary skills and achievement in this competition,” stated Home & Career Skills Teacher Barbra Commisso.
On Tuesday, March 18th, Republican Caucus Chairman John M. Kennedy, Jr. honored the Suffolk County Woman of the Year, Gina Coletti, at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Ms. Coletti, who grew up in Dix Hills, currently lives in Nesconset with her husband Robert and daughters Lauren and Jaclyn. In addition to all of her work in the community, Ms. Coletti is a successful businesswoman as a Real Estate Appraiser. She received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Finance from the New York Institute of Technology. With a 20 year successful banking and finance career with Citigroup, Gina transitioned into the real estate industry, holding both a New York State license as a Real Estate Appraiser and a Real Estate Salesperson.
In addition to her business acumen, Gina has taken a large role in shaping the community where Robert and she have chosen to raise their children. As former President of the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Board for over 10 years, Gina played an integral role in the creation of the Nesconset Gazebo Park, the Nesconset Toner Water Park, the completion of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Project and improvements along Smithtown Boulevard, including a Decorative Streetlight Project. Gina also has served on the boards and committees of the Annual Nesconset Chamber of Commerce fundraising events including Casino Night, Craft Fair, and Beautification Gala, in addition to the Summer Concert Series at the
Gazebo, Nesconset Day Street Fair, Nesconset 5-K Run, Chanukah Celebration Menorah Lighting and Christmas Tree Lighting. Ms. Coletti, who was first chosen as the Woman of the year in the 12th Legislative District was then chosen as Suffolk County Woman of the Year from a pool of 18 nominees, one from each Suffolk County Legislative District. “Gina is a wonderful representative of the community, both as a businesswoman and parent and community advocate,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I have been extremely lucky and it is my honor to have worked and continue to work with Gina to better our hometown and Legislative District. Congratulations to Gina and all of the other nominees in this competition,” concluded Kennedy.
Smithtown Recreation has teamed up with US Sports Institute to offer a Sports Squirts camp. This camp is an ideal introduction to sports for children ages 3 to 5. The program is designed to introduce young children to a variety of sports in a safe, structured environment. Youth Conservation Program Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative, a two-day, hands-on program on hunting safety will be offered on April 26th and 27th by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education Program, the agency announced today. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that the region offers a
multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “The 2014 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce the next generation of sportsmen and women to hunting ethics and teach them how to be responsible hunters from the start. These youth education courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative to expand hunting and
fishing opportunities in New York State.” Since 1994 this event has been sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education Program, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The Youth Conservation Program will be held at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville. Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a
75-word application. Enrollment in the class is open to all youth between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken their Hunter Education course. To date approximately 800 students have successfully completed YCP on Long Island. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate. This certificate is required in order to purchase a hunting license. For more
