The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!
Fundraising is also a very significant part of UCP, as it is with just about any other nonprofit organization. However, United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is one of the most fiscally responsible agencies on our island because 92 cents of every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.
This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. In addition to helping those with cerebral plasy, they currently are serving those with:

Exterior renovations can enhance the appearance of a property and make it more enjoyable for homeowners. Certain renovations have the potential to add value to a home, while others may do the opposite. Learning which ones have the largest return on investments can help homeowners select features that will have the most positive impact. Curb appeal goes a long way toward attracting potential buyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, first impressions of a property have a strong influence on buyers. Landscaping and external features can do much to influence such impressions. • Lawn care program: Investing in a lawn care program that consists of fertilizer and weed control application and can
be transferred over to a subsequent home owner is an attractive feature. NAR says such a care program can recover $1,000 in value of the $330 average cost, or a 303 percent ROI. • Low-maintenance lifestyle: When choosing materials for projects, those that offer low-maintenance benefits can be preferential. These include low-maintenance patio materials, composite decking, vinyl fencing, and inorganic mulched beds. • Fire pit: A fire pit can be used for much of the year. In the spring and summer, the firepit is a great place to congregate to roast marshmallows or sip wine and gaze into the fire. In the fall, the fire pit can make for a cozy retreat. A fire pit that has a gas burner is low-maintenance, and the National Association of Landscape Profession-
als says that most can recoup about $4,000 of their $6,000 average price tag. • Softscaping: Hard-scaping refers to structures like outdoor kitchens or decks. Softscaping involves the living elements of the landscape. Hiring a landscape designer to install trees, shrubs, natural edging, and rock elements can do wonders toward improving the look and value of a home. • Pool or water feature: In certain markets, particularly hot climates, a pool or another water feature is a must-have. However, in other areas where outdoor time is limited, a pool or water feature can actually lower the value of a home. Speaking with a real estate professional can give homeowners an idea of how a pool will fare in a given neighborhood.

When It Can Be Smart To Hire A Painting Pro Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various
paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or oors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spoton painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. Seventh graders in Marissa LoSardo’s class at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District walked to raise awareness for the water crisis in South Sudan on March 11. This is the fourth year the school participated in the fundraising event. As part of their ELA curriculum, the students recently read “A Long Walk to Water,� based on a true story about the need for clean water in South Sudan. During their lunch period, and with a gallon jug of water in hand, the students marched outside the school to raise money for Water for South Sudan. They collected money from family members and classmates to sponsor their walk. Members of the Community Service Club also collected donations during lunch periods. “The message from this book resonates with the students; it’s empowering because it shows how one person can make a difference,� LoSardo said. “Walking with a gallon jug of water also helps to build empathy because students get to see what life is like in other countries.� All the money raised will benefit the organization Water for South Sudan and is part of their Iron Giraffe Challenge. Tips When Planting Shade Trees
Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. Dogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Journalists Take The Lead Students in Joseph Sagarese’s journalism and media literacy class at Smithtown High School East in the Smithtown Central School District are learning all the basic roles of journalists during their class time. Each student has the opportunity to write, edit and layout articles for the school’s quarterly newspaper “The Matador.” Students have the opportunity to pitch articles that interest
them and are responsible for generating a minimum of four stories per quarter plus website content. After articles are submitted, most of the work –such as editing and layout – becomes student-centered, Sagarese said. “Students are learning how to write objectively and with purpose in addition to learning the basic mechanics of journalism,” he said. Based on
their areas of interest, students gravitate toward different positions in the journalism field such as proofing, editing, layout and design. Students have the opportunity to work together in editing tables, where submitted articles are discussed and edited by the students and revisiting their articles if needed. In the coming months, the class will be moving to a multimedia approach,
incorporating video and video production skills into their work. “This is hands-on realworld learning that the students can take with them as they move to college and beyond,” Sagarese said. “It gives them the tools to work in different areas of journalism but also gives them a good idea if this is a career path they want to pursue moving forward.”

The Differences Between Organic And Inorganic Mulches
The benefits of mulch are widely known among lawn and garden enthusiasts. By insulating soil from extreme temperatures, helping soil to retain moisture and preventing weed growth, mulch can help plants, trees and gardens thrive, even during periods when Mother Nature can make that very difficult. Novice gardners may find themselves a little confused when visiting a lawn and garden center to purchase mulch. That’s because there are various types of mulches. One of the ways to simplify that is to break mulches down into two main classes: organic and inorganic. Learning to distinguish between these two classes can help homeowners choose the best mulch for their properties.
Organic Mulch Organic mulches are made up of materials that decompose over time. The experts at BobVila.com note that, because they decompose over time, organic mulches must be replenished on a regular bais. Hardwood and softwood chips are among the most popular and recognizable organic mulches. Evergreen needles, leaves, grass clippings, and compost mixes also fall under the organic mulch umbrella. Many gardening enthusiasts prefer organic mulches because they help soil retain moisture, improve soil fertility and help to deter weed growth.
Gravel, brick chips and crushed stone are examples of inorganic mulches. Homeowners who do not intend to plant after laying mulch may lean toward inorganic mulches, as they won’t require much work, if any, after being laid. However, the Chicago Botanic Garden notes that inorganic mulches do not improve soil quality. In fact, because inorganic mulches like rocks and stones absorb heat, they can be detrimental to plants in areas where weather tends to be very dry and hot. The funds will be used to help our veteran population here on Long Island who are survivors of traumatic brain injuries and dealing with other related issues of war. Pal-O-Mine CEO and founder Lisa Gatti stated, “Thanks to the generosity of The Starbucks Foundation, Pal-O-Mine will be offering military service men and women the opportunity to
participate in days of wellness where they can learn natural horsemanship, as well as participate in our Equine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions. For some, it will be the first time they feel heard, understood, present, worthy and alive. As they build trust in their equine partners they will begin to trust themselves and shed a protective layer that has been holding them hostage for too long.” Instrumental in securing The Starbucks Foundation grant for Pal-O-Mine were two Starbucks store managers, Islandia, NY Store Manager Deborah Gregorio and Nesconset, NY Store Manager Dianne Devinney, who initially requested the grant. What Causes Curled Shingles?
No homeowner wants to look at the exterior of his or her home and see roof damage. Such damage may lead homeowners to think they need a new roof, a potentially costly expense that can quickly throw household budgets into a state of disarray. According to the HomeAdvisor, the average homeowner spends a little more than $7,600 installing a new roof. Various factors, including the size of a home and the type of roof homeowners prefer, will affect the cost of a roof replacement. In addition, homeowners who see roof damage can rest assured that not all roof problems will necessarily require a replacement roof to be installed. Curled shingles are a problem many homeowners have encountered. This particular problem is not
always indicative that a roof is on its way out. In fact, the home improvement resource This Old House notes that as asphalt shingles age, their corners often begin to curl downward or upward. Homeowners who notice this early enough can glue down the curled section of each shingle. Some shingles may be curling because they’re defective. Fortified Roofing, a New Jersey-based roofing company that specializes in the repairing and replacing of various roofing configurations, advises homeowners to contact a local roofing professional to diagnose the cause of the curling. Doing so quickly can prevent curled shingles from contributing to more widespread damage. Moisture and poor ventilation may be contributing to curled shingles as well.
Homeowners with attics in their home may see curled shingles on their roofs because moisture is building up in their poorly ventilated attics. In addition to causing damage such as curled shingles, a poorly ventilated attic allows moisture to build up, potentially contributing to mold growth. Improper roof installation also may be the culprit behind curled shingles. When a roof is not installed correctly, shingles may not be aligned or nailed down in the right way. Curled shingles are unsightly and can pose a significant threat to a home if not addressed promptly. Homeowners can protect themselves and their roofs by working with skilled roofing professionals, who can diagnose issues like curled shingles and offer the right solutions.
Dr. Stephanie O’Brien, Commack High School chemistry teacher, is the recipient of the POGIL Early Achievement Award – The POGIL Peach. POGIL stands for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning, a student-centered, grouplearning instructional strategy and philosophy developed through research on how students learn best. The national award is given to one secondary and postsecondary winner each year, and honors teachers who have distinguished themselves by advancing the goals of The Project and have an exceptional level of enthusiasm for active learning. The POGIL Project works with educators to disseminate its unique
pedagogy at the secondary and college levels through professional development workshops around the nation. Other criteria includes leadership in The Project, active participation in disseminating the POGIL pedagogy, and other contributions, such as workshop facilitation, authorship of activities, and participation in grant proposals. Dr. O’Brien will be recognized at the POGIL Project’s National Meeting in St. Louis in June 2020, and will be presented with a plaque and a cash award. An award winning teacher, Dr. O’Brien has taught all levels of chemistry from inclusion to International Baccalaureate (IB) at Commack High School.
Her pedagogical philosophy is that students need opportunities to experience what it is like to think and act as scientists. As a STEM master teacher in the Long Island region, she has presented at local, state and national conferences on topics such as literacy, flipped learning, inquiry instruction, student misconceptions as well as student technology integration. “Winning this award is the culmination of the efforts of a variety of POGIL practitioners who have taken the time to develop my instructional skills as a POGIL facilitator. It’s an honor to be recognized among such a highly esteemed group of educators,” said Dr. O’Brien.
