At the event, families can watch the robots compete, as well as check out the demonstrations from some of the Junior FIRST® LEGO League, FIRST® LEGO League and FIRST® Tech Challenge teams, visit the FESTO traveling exhibit about engineering and try out the da Vinci® Surgical System robot. “We are extremely excited to bring back the FIRST Robotics Competition this year,” said Debra Winter, FRC Co-Director, SBPLI. “This event is an important stepping stone for those students. For some, it’s a chance to take part in making a vision become a reality. For others, it opens the door to

possibilities that are few and far between these days, like scholarships or job opportunities. We also have some interesting demonstrations that we urge the visiting team members and their families to visit. Both SBPLI and FIRST are showing that, through the Long Island Regional, they are stepping up to the challenge of increasing awareness of STEM on Long Island.” This season, students participating in FIRST robotics are eligible to apply for more than $20 million in scholarships from 150 providers. Over a six-week timeframe, students work with professional engineering mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness

of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students. The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition’s sponsors and volunteers come from some of the most highly regarded organizations and businesses in the area, including FESTO Corporation, BAE Systems, Cablevision, Estee Lauder, NorthropGrumman, North ShoreLIJ Health System, PSEG Long Island, SCOPE Educational Services, Park Shore Country Day Camp and School, Pepsi-Co, Schenck Trebel

Now in its 26th season, the FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates close to 2,548 teams from every state in the U.S. and 16 countries worldwide to compete in 58 Regional Events and 17 District Competitions. More than 2,000 students will compete at the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition to be eligible to earn a spot at the Championship, to be held April 22nd-25th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. This year’s challenge, RECYCLE RUSHSM, is a recycling-themed competition played by two alliances of three robots each. Of Snow & Spring & Savoring It All By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has arrived. Sort of. As I write this column, snow is accumulating at quite a pace, ushering in the start of the new season in much the same manner as the last one began. I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms. It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme

fluctuations, from 100º days to 8 feet of snow at a clip. I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you. Of the four seasons, I would have to say spring is my favorite. It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now. Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s

the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh. It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise. So, to all, enjoy the season. All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws. Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner. Everyone has a preference. Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

On Sunday, March 8th, a group of Commack Middle School and High School students represented Commack School District at the Long Island regional competition for National History Day, held at Hofstra University. National History Day is a competition that helps students see connections between the past and present over time. This year’s theme, “Leadership and Legacy,” provided a focus for the History Day projects, and increased students’ understanding by developing an historical point of view that helps

students place information in the correct context. We are proud to announce that Elizabeth Jacobs received 1st place honors for her performance depicting “The Leadership and Legacy of Chief Joseph.” Elizabeth also received recognition from the Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center for “Best Long Island Project depicting Genocide, Bias or Intolerance.” Julianna Jacobs and Rachel Forman received 1st place honors for their exhibit illustrating “The Leadership and Legacy of Abraham Lincoln.” Commack High School

The students went to the medical, mental and legal stations to determine their qualification for entry into the United States. The students then visited other stations, where they learned about other aspects of immigration, including: “recent immigrants” (students and a teacher) who spoke about their experiences; the citizenship test; political cartoons on immigration; reader’s theatre; virtual tour of Ellis Island; virtual tour of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum; Steps

to American Citizenship; political reasons for immigration (refugees and asylum); video clips; racism/segregation and immigration; ethnic foods; memoir station; and the Statue of Liberty. Theatre 3 also presented Voices from the Fire about the Holocaust, which demonstrated persecution as one reason for immigration. Each student also wrote a short essay on the essential question of the day: How has immigration impacted the United States? Immigration Day concluded with a lively debate where groups of students were assigned to take a stand for or against immigration.

Hauppauge Middle School 8th grade students recently “became immigrants for a day” as they immersed themselves in the immigration process and took away thought-provoking details about the history of U.S. immigration during the school’s Immigration Day program. As the middle school gymnasium was transformed into the “Great Hall of Ellis Island,” students learned about the reasons people immigrated to the United States. Prior to the Immigration Day event, the students created an immigrant profile for themselves in their Social Studies classes. The middle school students were divided into 22 groups –

MESOPOTAMIAN INNOVATION

SUBMITTED BY: CHRISTOPHER DAMONE, 9TH GRADE • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL The Mesopotamians have created many inventions that have influenced our lives today. Without the Mesopotamians, many of the things we use on a daily basis would not exist. One of the many inventions of the Mesopotamians was the creation of the wheel. The wheel was invented around 3500 B.C.E. The Sumerians used the wheels so that they could construct wheeled carts. By doing so, they were able to create extremely efficient ways of transporting goods. Clearly, the wheel plays a significant role in our society today. Without the wheel, cars, trains and even airplanes could not function. The wheel helped the Sumerians tremendously thousands of years ago, and it continues to help us today. Another major invention of the Mesopotamians was the creation of iron metallurgy. By 3000 B.C.E., the Mesopotamians attempted

to create iron. When they first started, the iron was too weak to be used for anything beneficial. However, this all changed when one group of people fixed the problem. The Hittites, a group of people who lived in modernday Turkey, created extremely durable iron weapons and tools. The iron they used quickly spread throughout the Middle East. Not only was iron durable, but it was also inexpensive. It is evident that iron has a tremendous influence on our society today. Iron can be found in fences and buildings. Additionally, the Mesopotamians are responsible for shipbuilding. Shipbuilding enabled them to have long-distance trade. The group of people in Mesopotamia who were responsible for shipbuilding was the Phoenicians. One place they went to for trading was Harappa, which is located by the Indus River, Egypt, Lebanon and Persia, which was

located in modern-day Iran, Arabia and Anatolia, which is located in modern-day Turkey. In our society, we clearly use ships to facilitate trade as well. Shipbuilding is still a very important part of our society today. One major invention of the Mesopotamians was alphabetic writing. The Phoenicians, by approximately 1500 B.C.E, created alphabetic writing. The Phoenician alphabet consisted of 22 consonants. Their system of writing was much more efficient than the earlier cuneiform writing because it was difficult to remember many different symbols. With the Phoenician alphabet, you could build words with letters, which made it much easier for the population to learn how to write. Many of the languages spoken today have Phoenician roots, including English.

To continue a school tradition, students, faculty and staff at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District dedicated a day to support the district’s anti-violence policy with special assemblies, student artwork and performances. Each year, the school’s Character Education Committee selects a theme rooted in the message against violence. To

commemorate this year’s theme “OMS Imagines…” everyone was encouraged to dress in 1960s inspired costumes and accessories. Throughout the day, each grade level attended an awareness assembly that featured student artwork, homemade movies and a presentation by the school’s Tornadoes Listening and Caring Club. Sponsored by the committee, students entered an art or writing

contest that addressed this year’s theme and were shared during the assemblies. “We hope that by asking the students to dress up, create artwork, and participate in the assembly, we can carry this theme throughout the school year,” said OMS AntiViolence Day coordinator Jennifer Klein.

Unit Of Success Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District hosted its annual eighth-grade science fair where students let their scientific creativity come to life. Students in physical science, life science, earth science and science and engineering classes entered the school’s science fair. Awards were given to the top students in each class category along with first-, second- and thirdplace awards to students who entered in science and engineering subcategories canned heat and

windmill weight lifting. The district congratulates the following students for their outstanding work. Spreading Symphonious Sounds grade student musicians have demonstrated their musical talents at local fundraisers and charitable events including the community Variety Show and the Global Justice Concert. Members of the music society have also performed for residents at the Atria in East Northport and participated in the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs’ Special Needs Respite. Each year, a number of

students from Harborfields are chosen to participate in prestigious local, state, regional, and national music honor performing ensembles. In addition to numerous school performances, these talented 11th- and 12th-

Ingenious Inventions Coordinated by the district’s Shared Decision Making Committee, James. H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District hosted the 2nd Annual Invention Convention event on March 10th. Assuming the role of “inventors,” more than 92 students in third- through fifth-grade demonstrated their creativity with cleverly crafted inventions.

The event featured invention ideas from the minds of students showcased by presentation boards, prototype models and lots of enthusiasm. In addition to the inventions, a representative from the company Mad Science Group provided students with a hands-on science experiment activity where they observed the transformation of a liquid substance to a rubbery and

stretchy state. To conclude the event, students received a certificate of participation in the convention. “We wanted the kids to think of a problem they encounter everyday or very frequently and we told them to be creative in solving that problem,” said third-grade teacher and member of the Shared Decision Making Committee Lisa Friend.

Study Abroad Scholarship Nicole Gendjoian, a Spanish teacher at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, was recently selected through the National Spanish Exam, a division of the American Association of Teaching Spanish and Portuguese, for a study abroad summer scholarship program in Spain. To apply for the

scholarship, Gendjoian was required to create a blog with photos of her teaching, a video explaining why she wants to study in Spain and a post with her reaction to winning the scholarship. Gendjoian is among four educators from across the nation who was selected for the scholarship program. While aboard, Gendjoian

will complete six graduate credits at the Universidad Compultense de Madrid. The scholarship will cover the cost of her tuition, room and board for the four-week program. Upon completing her college credits, Gendjoian plans to spend an additional two weeks to travel in Spain.

Astounding Artwork

Shannon O’Reilly, a senior at Harborfields High School, was presented with an Award of Excellence for her artwork in the High Arts Showcase exhibit at the Huntington Arts Council. In its eleventh year, the High Arts Showcase features 11th and 12thgrade high school student

artwork from six local participating schools in the Huntington Arts Council’s Journey Program. As part of an AP art class assignment, O’Reilly took a still life photograph of an egg yolk and a glass of spilled milk. With her art teacher’s assistance, O’Reilly submitted her artwork to the Huntington

Art Council. Along with other student artists, O’Reilly’s artwork was displayed at the exhibit from February 13th to March 2nd. “For my photo I wanted to explore the contrast in color and do an interesting still life,” said O’Reilly.

Prevention Program Underway Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that they have received a grant from the Office of Mental Health (OMH) for the development of a suicide prevention program aimed at supporting young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 who are at high risk for suicide. Through collaborations with youth agency staff

and youth groups, the suicide prevention program will reach high risk subpopulations, such as youth aging out of foster care, youth with disabilities, GLBT youth and youth living in high risk communities on Long Island. In addition, the project will use a referral service to connect youth to mental health providers, thus increasing

access to services. FREE will launch an anti-stigma marketing campaign, an online support group to help youth in distress, a website, and publications of resources. The project aims to create a safe and supportive environment where youth and young adults watch out for each other and get help if needed. The website, freespli.

org, includes a toll free number to call, 1.800.273. TALK (8255), if you have had thoughts of suicide or are thinking about suicide. Help is available, free of charge, 24/7. The website also includes a Suicide Prevention Resource Center for youth, friends and families and a list of websites to get help for crisis situations. FREE will partner with

several well-respected youth organizations to implement the suicide prevention program. Partners include: Adelante, Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk County, Inc. (EOC), Family Life Center (Wyandanch Youth Center), and Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. (YES). In addition, FREE will work with the Suicide Prevention Coalition of
