From blue displays throughout Main Street in Riverhead to lectures in the community, Northwell Health is making people aware of their colorectal health and colon cancer. The American Cancer Society anticipates that there will be almost 100,000 new cases of colon cancer this year. Men have about one in 21 chance of getting colon cancer in their lifetime and women have approximately one in 23 odds of getting the disease, the ACS said. Throughout the month of March, Northwell Health is promoting colon cancer awareness through:

Students: Put Away Your Smart Phone!

Although quality use of the smart phone is more important than using it for fun. “What the students are reading on their phones isn’t all unimportant content,” said Steven Rothberg, president of College Recruiter, a job placement site. “With well over 90 percent using smart phones and most reading e-mails on their smart phones, students are often using their phones to search for an internship or entry-level job. That type of reading will require more focus on their phones and less on their surroundings than if they were looking at videos of cute kittens.” We decided to focus on the work of Dr. Ofir Turel, professor of information systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, for this issue. “Smart phones are like refrigerators full of surprising foods; it is very tempting for many users to get sucked into checking and updating content,” Dr. Turel told us. “Taken together, the strong psychological rewards people receive from using applications on their cell phones, the inconvenience they feel when they do not use them, and the time it takes to do all this are reasonable possible explanations for the need to spend break time, while walking through university corridors, on the cell phone.” You have to ask yourself, is what you’re doing on social media really all that important? “The concept of a “friend” has changed, from having 10-30 friends when I grew up to having hundreds or thousands of “friends” on Facebook, some of whom you have never met,” Turel said. “Managing so many so-called friends, following their daily, and often mundane, routines and activities, is time consuming. “Overall, the balance between the positive and negative effects of cell phone really depends on the self-control of

users and their understanding that they need to put limits on and control their use patterns. Ultimately, allowing the use of such sites in class assumes a certain level of maturity – students need to refrain from abusing such systems, and use these “re-charging” rights wisely.” So what can be done about this problem, if anything? “First, we need to increase awareness among students regarding potential problems associated with excessive and sometimes addictive use of some technologies,” Turel said. Some universities already include a module on Internet/ video gaming risks for incoming freshmen students, he noted, so adding a seminar on appropriate smart phone use would be easy. “Many causes of dropping out have to do with spending too much time on non-productive Internet activities such as playing video games,” he said. “Teachers can explain the risks to students and discuss their cell phone and social media use policies in class.” Turel added, “Cell phones, Facebook and other technologies are like food – we need them and we do not want to avoid them. When consumed at healthy levels, for the right purpose and properly (for example, around the table and not while driving) they are very useful. However, over- and improper consumption can lead to adverse consequences. We need to be better aware of these risks and teach ourselves to develop the right balance of both food consumption and technology use.” Brooks concluded, “The addiction that students have to their mobile devices has fundamentally changed the nature of interpersonal relationships and communication. The technology has allowed us to communicate and connect easier and more rapidly, but has caused even more distance between people.”

In just the past couple of years, especially, it seems, at commuter colleges, the majority of students in campus corridors seem to be staring down at their smart phones. “In the classroom, cell phones are a major distraction,” said Stoney Brooks, a professor of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. “Many students do not think that multitasking – checking Facebook, texting, watching a harmless YouTube video, etc. – is harmful to their learning. This is not true. Humans cannot multitask – we rapidly task-switch. And whenever we switch tasks, our brains have to refocus our processing to the new task, and we forget some of the information that we had for the first task. There are studies that show that, for example, social media use in the classroom is associated with increased stress and lower classroom performance.” Obviously, this can be a safety concern, too, with no one actually looking up and taking in the action happening around them. But also it can be a quality-of-life concern, as students may not feel they can escape their day-today worries while on campus, instead managing their private lives via the device. What suffers could be the socalled “college experience,” the experts warn us. You may be missing out on enjoying your time on a real, physical campus while you tend to a virtual world. “Cell phones have a great potential for help and for harm. Sadly, the harmful effects are more prevalent than the helpful ones for today’s students, and they are cheating themselves out of the true college experience,” Brooks added. One professor told us an anecdote of another professor who gives his students allotted breaks for their cell phone use. This would be analogous to the cigarette breaks given in the 1970s and prior. The students have trouble keeping focus if they can’t get a fix.

Susan Dowd of Syosset High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2016” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like Ms. Dowd offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.” Ms. Dowd will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 10th, along with thirteen other teachers from across the 150 public school districts and private schools on Long Island. Following the award ceremony, Benjamin M. Friedman, Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, will discuss “Prospects for the US Economy and US Economic Policy.” Ms. Dowd started her career at Syosset High School in 1988 teaching Sequential 1 Mathematics. Over the past 25 years, she has taught every mathematics course at the school, and through her mentoring of independent study students, has taught second- and third-year college Calculus courses. Forever Pals May God always watch over you (me too). Be careful, and always be good. Love You, Your Pal Forever Grandpa P.S. Did not cheat! …An excerpt from the inscription my Grandpa, my “Pal,” wrote in the pages of my senior high school yearbook, after some gentle, goodnatured prodding that, after all, he couldn’t always just leave these things to Grandma. I’m not sure exactly when “Pal” became our thing, but indeed it was, for as far back as I can remember. It was the way we addressed each other – in person, in cards exchanged, in life – a bond that grew ever closer with each passing year. So many memories, from childhood sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, to endless summer (and autumn) nights spent “cuddling” on the couch watching the Yankees, plenty of snacks at hand. I would often call ahead to see if there were any good “tickets” available, and my Grandpa would chuckle on the other end of the phone, assuring me that he had saved two front row seats just for us. There were the countless weekends spent following my Grandpa around the house, out to his shed in the backyard, down to the basement, his “workshop” … wanting to know what he was working on as he tinkered and trimmed, painted and planted – always doing something, but never too busy for his Pal. I can still recall the dozens of bocce ball “tournaments” in his backyard “court,” a perfectly manicured stretch of lawn that only he knew the nuances of, leading to many victories for Grandpa – me, not so much. And cards… I still have a set of playing cards my Pal gave to me, the same ones he had taught me to play “War” and “Rummy” with. (He let me win those matches occasionally.) So many hot summer afternoons running through the sprinklers as a child, “swimming” in my inflatable

Smurfs pool, and of course swinging on the old swing set in the backyard. Once the set came down – much to my dismay – my Grandpa managed to rig a single swing from a sturdy tree branch so that his “big kid” of a grandchild could still enjoy. I can clearly picture my Pal sitting on the patio under the awning watching me fly through the air, laughing silently, his shoulders shaking up and down. There were the days when I would accompany my Pal on his frequent walks around the neighborhood, a route that often took us through the local cemetery around the corner from his house. Occasionally, I would bring my bicycle along and “practice” on the smooth paved paths, eventually begging him to take me to the nearby elementary school where I could speed through the empty parking lot at my leisure while he kept a careful eye on me. As I grew older, my Grandpa would often pick me up from work on the weekends for lunch, where he would make his “famous” pepper and potato and egg pie for me. As we sat down to eat, he would let me sip some of the foam from the top of his beer. Often, we would finish up with a few pretzels or cookies, as you could never leave without having dessert. At Christmas time, one of our most cherished family traditions, we would celebrate Christmas Eve at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Grandma would take care of the menu, and Grandpa would handle all the gift-wrapping, a skill he had perfected from his many years of working at the A&S department store. And, just when the night was nearly over, my Pal would disappear down the basement, only to emerge with “one more gift,” usually the most special one of all. At Father’s Day, it became tradition for me to take my father and grandfather out to breakfast, using the funds that my Pal had given me throughout the year when he would come over to collect my recyclables and cash in the bottle deposits. It didn’t matter if there were two

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan bottles; he always gave me at least a dollar in return. If it was more, five dollars. When I protested that it was too much, he would just smile, saying he was “going to the store anyway” to check out the latest sales and stock up the basement “pantry.” As I grew older, I came to appreciate more and more what a special man this was, how lucky I was to have him in my life. I cherished every message he would leave on our home answering machine, singing “Happy Birthday” to me; and, once my grandmother passed away several years ago, the beautiful cards he would pick out to mark every occasion. Whether we were exchanging funny faces and making cross-eyes at each other across the kitchen table, or I was begging him to let me treat him to dinner at our local diner (not knowing he had already sent his secret signal to the waitress and managed to whisk away the bill before anyone else had a chance to see it), we always had a deep connection. Just last week, my special Pal passed away, leaving a giant hole in my heart. His life was a shining example of what a man should be, to my grandmother, to his children and grandchildren, to everyone. His at-times shy, always humble, demeanor concealed a sly sense of humor that only those closest to him were privileged to see. The laughter and love he brought to all our lives was, and remains, my fondest memory of him. Each time I hear the song “In the Mood,” I will continue to picture my grandparents flying across the dance floor, never missing a step, as they looked adoringly at one another. I can only hope they are dancing together at this very moment. And so, Pal… May God always watch over you (me too). I promise to be careful, and to always be good. Love You, Your Pal Forever Jamie

Karishma Shah, a former Syosset High School student who will graduate from Harvard College in 2017, nominated Ms. Dowd, describing her as “a prominent influence in my life.” “Without her encouraging me to take challenging classes and inspiring me to be more

resilient, I would not have pursued or been able to survive some of Harvard’s most challenging classes.” Ms. Shah added, “I now tutor Calculus and find myself explaining the concepts in the way Ms. Dowd taught me. As a result of Ms. Dowd’s influence and my subsequent work with my tutees, my tutees have not only improved their grades but also their attitudes toward challenges.”

At the ceremony on April 10th, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teachers of 2016 who will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research

laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. When Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante learned of this award, she commented, “Sue Dowd is an exemplary teacher who epitomizes all that is good about education.

Her mastery of all levels of mathematics makes her one of the most sought after mentors in our building.” Dr. Durante further noted, “As a teacher in the classroom her knowledge is only matched by her compassion for the students and an understanding of the many learning styles which are necessary to properly convey the material. Our school is a

better place because of all that Sue Dowd does both inside and outside of the classroom.” “What the Harvard Club of Long Island is acknowledging now, we have known for years,” Dr. Durante continued, “She is indeed a distinguished teacher and deserving of this recognition.” This year’s fourteen Distinguished Teacher

Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach art, biology, chemistry, earth science, English, marine science, math, music and social studies. The winners teach in the Half Hollow Hills, Herricks, Hicksville, Manhasset, Massapequa, Oceanside, Sayville, Sewanhaka, Syosset and Valley Stream districts, as well as St. Anthony’s High School, The Stony Brook School and the Waldorf School. Three Sewanhaka science teachers in prior years have been honored by the Harvard Club of LI: Yvonne Sherwood in 2006, David Sexton in 2013, and Jack Chen in 2015.

Distinguished Teacher Long Island - Ms. Pantorno will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 10th. Following the award ceremony, Benjamin M. Friedman, Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, will discuss “Prospects for the US Economy and US Economic Policy.” Ms. Pantorno , who teaches World History and AP World History at Sewanhaka High School, has taught in the district for eleven of her sixteen years. After earning a degree in history from Adelphi University, she earned her Masters in Secondary Education from Molloy College. Besides having what she describes as “a passion for teaching,” she continues the avocation she began pursuing in high school, volunteering in different capacities at local animal rescue organizations. In

the summers, she travels widely - to Italy, Brazil, Costa Rica, and so on. Nominated by Shahrukh Khan, a graduate of Sewanhaka in the Harvard College Class of 2017. Ms. Pantorno was described as “Incredibly influential” and “eccentric and demanding,” as well as “effective and caring.” “She also fostered an interest in history that stays strong today,” added Mr. Khan “with many of my classmates (and I) going on to major in international relations, economics, and political science.” “Tedious, annoying and hard” were the adjectives the former student used to describe nightly homework, before adding, “but whether they were readings out of a textbook or coloring and labeling countries and empires on a map, they were like going to the gym: everyday I felt stronger, more prepared.”

Nassau BOCES took an innovative step toward instructional collaboration recently by bringing together educators from two different programs. Teachers from Barry Tech, the agency’s career and technical education high school, met with their peers in Adult Career and Technical Education (ACTE) to share best practices and to help each other improve the courses they teach. Barry Career and Technical Education center, so even though Barry Tech operates during the day and ACTE is an evening program, instructors are sharing equipment, supplies and classrooms. It was a natural outcome that they should have a dialogue about how best to utilize their mutual resources.

Educators shared challenges and successes, instructional strategies, best practices, and classroom management. They also discussed industry trends, as a major factor in both programs is job placement. There was a fiscal benefit as well, as the teachers collaborated on how to maximize the use of shared space and equipment. “Many of our teachers have asked for help in improving their programs,” said Laura Holder-Gibbs, Principal of the Adult Career and Technical Education program. “We’re always working to make our courses even more viable and engaging for students, while aligning curriculum with industry standards. We encourage our educators to collaborate on improving instructional delivery by sharing best

practices.” “All of our educators agree that the most important aspect of their collaborative effort is how it improves the education we’re giving our students,” said Barry Tech Principal Laurie Harris. “They have a mutual passion about the work they do. The crucial thing now is to keep the dialogue going on a daily basis.” “This was an opportunity for our experts in the field to come together and discuss how best to improve instruction,” said Michele Cohen, Assistant Principal of the Adult Evening Program, who was a key player in making this collaborative event happen. “I believe that we work better as a group than as individuals. Feedback from the meeting was very positive and we expect to involve even more educators in the future.”

CAREER FAIR - Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and members of his Youth Leadership Caucus sponsored a youth career fair at Brentwood High School recently. Over 500 students and a dozen organizations attended the event, held in partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Labor. The concept of hosting a job fair for teenagers was generated from the Youth Leadership Caucus students, who meet regularly to identify and address needs and issues facing today’s youth. Members were on hand to assist and direct student attendees.

CELEBRATING THE CHIEF - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the installation dinner for the Bayport Fire Department. He was joined by Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino and the members of the department in honoring Chief Bob Fleming, who has been a leader at the department for many years. Councilman Flotteron thanked Chief Fleming for his service to Bayport and the greater Islip community.

INSTALLATION DINNER - On March 12th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Kevin LaValle attended the Selden Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. ECONOMIC FORUM - On March 14th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted an economic forum, which was held at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead. Attendees included several Chamber of Commerce leaders from around the First Congressional District. The discussion focused on recently passed and currently pending legislation concerning taxes, health care and regulations that impact our job creators.

Heading to the Finals Six students from the Nassau BOCES STEM Institute will advance to the Final Round of the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair at Hofstra University next month. LODGE PRESIDENT HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the installation ceremony for the President of the Sgt. John Basilone Lodge #2442 of the Sons of Italy. The re-elected president, Margaret Ripa Maier, has been a leader of the Lodge’s activities and initiatives for several years. Councilman Flotteron thanked her for her commitment to the Lodge and to the Islip community.

Out of the Box Restoration

Students in John Hellmuth’s Auto Body Repair and Refinishing Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center sometimes do “out of the box” projects. The special career education students typically dismantle

damaged cars, straighten metal parts and car frames, hammer out dents, grind, sand and prepare cars for the paint shop. They also learn how to do oxy acetylene welding. Having the ability to weld and knowing the

proper techniques afford students the opportunity to use the skill on things other than cars. Hellmuth likes to offer his students different projects to work on to expand their practical skills and career opportunities.

Recently students used their welding fabrication skills to restore and rebuild a barbeque smoker for Michael Heerbrandt, a volunteer firefighter with the West Sayville Fire Department. Heerbrandt said, “I thought I could fabricate a smoker by myself. I started with a brand new 275-gallon oil tank.” He painted it but the paint began peeling off. He realized he didn’t have the tools and equipment he needed to build the smoker correctly. “When things started to go wrong, I remembered a fellow firefighter, John Hellmuth, was a teacher at ESBOCES doing auto repair. I asked him if his students ever worked on

“out of the box” projects; anything not related to cars.” Hellmuth responded with, “We are up for almost anything.” Several items needed to be repaired, rebuilt, and restored on the smoker. The students took apart the trailer, put it back together again so it sat straight, rewired the lights on the back trailer, took the tank off and welded it back on. They sanded and repainted the tank, cut and welded a steel plate to fit between the food and the fire, and welded shelves onto the smoker for the food. “They did a great job. I’m very thankful for all their hard work. I know that the smoker is safe and sturdy,” Heerbrandt said. A new smoker can cost upwards

of $8,000. “This one is as good or better and it’s a great conversation piece,” he said. Heerbrandt paid for all the parts and supplies and thanked the students with lunch, cooked using the newly-refurbished smoker. It consisted of pulled pork, chicken, and several side dishes. This “out of the box” project was beneficial to the students who are learning skills for postschool employment. “Being able to take a skill and apply it means they can demonstrate knowledge and competency; doing this project for firefighters made the experience even more rewarding,” said Hellmuth.
