North Shore Land Alliance, a local land trust, is seeking high school students, retirees, educators, nature enthusiasts, youth groups and community-minded businesses to help protect and steward the beautiful areas in our communities. These areas safeguard our air and water supplies, provide wildlife habitat and create places for people of all ages to play, learn and connect with nature. The Land Alliance is very fortunate to work with more than 200 volunteers who contribute 1,000 hours of community service annually. That time, valued at approximately $30,000, provides support for land conservation projects and educational programs. Volunteers assist with a variety of efforts including trail restoration, invasive species management and plant and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. They also assist with community outreach, fundraising events, office work and membership mailings. Local educators and naturalists share their expertise with the Land Alliance community by leading their guided the Walks in Woods and helping to educate more than 3,400 school children through their Long Island Water Education Program. Additionally, volunteers, such as Sue Simon, an avid photographer and nature lover from Smithtown, help capture beautiful images to be featured in various Land Alliance publications and on their website. In essence, the Land Alliance cannot do their job without the important contributions of volunteers. The Land Alliance is excited about their most recent purchase of the Humes Japanese Stroll

Giving a gift card is an increasingly popular way to show you care. While they may be great for the giver and receiver, they are not a great gift for the environment. Each year over 75 million pounds of recyclable PCV enter our landfills as a result of gift cards. Commack Middle School’s Nature Explorers and Earth Protectors Club initiated a Gift Card Recycling Drive. With the help of Starbucks locations
in Elwood, Commack, and East Northport, the students collected over 2,000 empty and used cards. A local Dunkin’ Donuts also got involved by saving the cards. Club members repurposed approximately 500 cards into guitar picks and offered to staff, the music department, and clubs. The remaining cards were sent off to be recycled and used to create hotel keys, other gift cards, signs or luggage tags.
So when you use the remaining balance on your gift cards and they ask, “Do you want the card back, or should I throw it out?” think about recycling or repurposing the card. CMS Nature Explorers and Earth Protectors will always accept your empty gift cards. As Club Advisor Debra Lindquist stated, “We are making a change one store at a time. Please do your share to help save our planet.”

SONGS OF SAFETY - On March 8th, Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District hosted a cultural arts assembly promoting Project Lead the Way education, safety and creative movement. Joe, the Singing Bus Driver, visited the activities traveled to outer school’s kindergartners to sing about the importance of bus safety and the many space when technology different ways to count to 100. The seventh-graders were tasked with designing a vehicle that could travel
on Mars from base to base using just a few materials found at their base station. Powered by a balloon, the students worked in groups over a week’s time to develop a rover that could travel the straightest and furthest path to the next base station. The rovers had to take into account the
gravitational pull on Mars and must weigh in at less than 0.35 ounces. Equipped with balloons, straws, tape, rubber bands, wood skewers, wheels and styrofoam trays, the students tested their vehicles’ functionality on March 9th.
ARROW OF LIGHT - On Saturday, March 11th, Congressman Lee Zeldin attended a Cub Scout Blue and Gold Ceremony for Pack 589 of Smithtown. I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met
with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,
a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

Commack Middle School, Long Island’s first and largest MiddleLevel International Baccalaureate World School, demonstrated its dedication to holistic education, global mindedness, service, and community spirit when it hosted its tenth annual International Culture and Cuisine Night on Wednesday, March 8th. Hundreds of students and their families gathered to celebrate culture and learning, through myriad activities led by representatives from several departments, including World Languages, math, social studies, art, and music. Through games, demonstrations, food sampling, and musical performances, attendees discovered the history, language, geography, and traditions of our neighbors
throughout the world. Members of the Global Citizens elective class promoted the United Nations Global Goals - 17 goals developed to put an end to poverty, to protect the planet, and to ensure prosperity for all, as part of a the UN’s Sustainable Development Agenda. Each of the Global Goals has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.” For the goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and people like us,” said World Language Coordinator LauraAnne Weiss. Students shared several of the important Global Goals identified by the United Nations, such as: Affordable and Clean Energy, Clean Water and Sanitation, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Peace, Justice and
Strong Institutions, and No Hunger. Joseph Rodichok of Smithtown East High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2017” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like Mr. Rodichok offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.” Mr. Rodichok will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 30th, along with 11 other teachers from across Long Island. Following the award ceremony, Professor Annette Gordon-Reed who holds chairs in Legal History at Harvard Law School and in History at Harvard College, will lecture on “The Hamilton Image in the American Mind.” Gordon-Reed has won numerous awards, including the MacArthur Foundation (“Genius”) Award and the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. Mr. Rodichok, who teaches AP and Regents Physics at Smithtown East High School, has taught for nineteen years, twelve of them in the district. An advisor to the Physics Club and assistant coach for his high school daughter’s travel soccer team, he has written more than
200 recommendations for his students to colleges, summer programs, and internships. Beginning his working life as Mechanical Engineer, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Hofrstra University, Mr. Rodichok so enjoyed training other engineers that his wife Susan suggested he consider full-time teaching. He then earned his Master’s in Secondary Education from Dowling College. His wife Susan, who teaches 4th grade at Smithtown Elementary School, and he have two teenage daughters. He enjoys cooking, golf, going to the beach, and family travels. Active in the school and community, two years ago Mr. Rodichok participated in the school musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Trying,” as he has in a variety of fund-raisers, including Dancing with the Teachers (2010-2015) and the Smithtown East Fashion Show Fundraiser (2005 - 2016). His awards include a 2006 Technology Grant from Western Suffolk BOCES. Nominated by Jackie Cuccurullo, a former Smithtown East High School student who is currently a freshman at Harvard College, Mr. Rodichok was described as, “A fun-loving and brilliant teacher who taught one of my most memorable classes I’ve ever had.” “Rod demonstrated the laws of the universe with the most interesting gadgets,” Ms. Cuccurullo continued, “creating entertaining, yet educational, experiments that made physics enjoyable. From the egg-drop experiment, to attempting to pull a tablecloth out from under dishes, to dressing up as the Joker on Halloween, Rod made learning enjoyable.” “He had a student-first mentality from day one, when he let us know that he was available for extra help during any ‘free’ time in his day,” his former student concluded. “Mr. Rodichok had a significant effect on my high school experience and, most
importantly, he showed me the importance of loving and being passionate about your profession.” When Jennifer Bradshaw, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, learned of this award, she described him as “an outstanding teacher who motivates and challenges his students both inside and outside the classroom.” “Mr. Rodichok’s professionalism and dedication to teaching, particularly in the subject of physics, has made him an inspiration to his students,” Ms. Bradshaw continued, “This is a welldeserved achievement for a remarkable professional who truly exemplifies the mission of the Smithtown Central School District.” At the ceremony on April 30th, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teacher of 2017 who will also receive a scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s 12 Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach economics, English, history, math, physics, and science research. The winners teach in the Baldwin, Farmingdale, Herricks, Lynbrook, Manhasset, Mt Sinai, Sayville, Sewanhaka, Smithtown, and Syosset school districts. The Harvard Club of Long Island has previously honored Smithtown math teacher, Brucce Kahn with this award in 2005.

On Saturday March 12th 2017, the Suffolk County Council (Boy Scouts of America)’s Honor Guard from Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge) participated in the New York State Congressional Youth Award Ceremony at Hunter College. The Honor Guard presented the Colors at the start of the ceremony. New York State Congressman Joe Crowley (14th Congressional District: Queens and Bronx) presented the awards. The recipients were from all around the State of New York and ranged in age from 14 to 24 years. The young adults who earned these awards
worked hard in their communities on projects and spent many hours volunteering in their communities. The goal for the

Hauppauge High School’s Theatre students brought the 1920’s Jazz Age to life in a charming production of Sandy Wilson’s musical comedy The Boy Friend. This light romantic spoof is set at the Villa Caprice where Maisie (Meghan Smith); the girls Dulcie (Emma Casey), Nancy (Hannah SchwackTrovitch), and Fay (Danielle Gerardi); the maid Hortense (Emily Pandal); and Madame Dubonnet (René Kozlowski) live at Mme. Dubonnet’s School for Young Ladies. Set against the backdrop of the French Riviera, the play tells the story of English heiress Polly
Browne (Evelyn Beltrani) who is longing for only one thing: a boy friend. Polly’s widowed father Percival (Rob Podmore) – convinced that any boy who isn’t wealthy will court Polly strictly for her financial situation – forbids her to engage any potential suitors. Honoring his wishes, Polly explains to Tony (Francesco DiFlora) – the messenger boy with whom she’s fallen in love – that she is not a rich girl. Tony, in reality, is the missing son of the rich Lord and Lady Brockhurst (David Fresolone and Rebecca Proscia). This is just the tip of the mistaken identity iceberg, as love
proceeds to find its way charmingly through nearly every member of the cast and brings them all to a happy ending. Film Screening & Discussion Westy Self Storage in East Northport, NY, along with the Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club will be hosting a film screening for “Under Water” an antidrug short film, followed by a facilitated community discussion of addiction and recovery. There will be two viewings at Westy: Thursday, March 30th and Sunday, April 2nd, both at 7:30 p.m. “Under Water,” based on a true story, was written and directed by local resident Bryan Fitzgerald. This program is designed to increase awareness of parents, educators, atrisk youth and their loved ones for signs of alcohol and drug addictions. The forum will cover reducing the likelihood of addictions through family and community based education, as well as the variety of available resources for the
prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of addictions. Join the members of the Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club along with professionals from the treatment community, local school districts and various support groups dedicated to those who are addicted as well as the loved ones who are adversely affected by addiction.
