Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in Long Island Cares’ 7th annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters. Legislator Trotta pointed out that, according to Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “Pets keep many

people going, giving them comfort and a reason to survive in difficult times so I am pleased to use my office as a drop off site for this important drive, “said Legislator Trotta. Boy Scout Troop 5 volunteered to help Legislator Trotta as one of their community service projects by collecting cash donations and pet food at Petco in Commack and they used that money to purchase over $300 worth of pet food and toys for the drive. The scouts who participated from Troop 5 were: Karl Schluter, Joseph Baker, Jack Nixon, James LaReddola, Kevin

Krumenacker, David Baker, Ryan Starzee, William Washko, David Washko, Matthew Baldwin and Michael Lombardo. “I am very thankful to the boys for giving up their Saturday to help with this event and really appreciate their efforts,” added Trotta. Legislator Trotta will be holding the drive until March 31st. Donations may be dropped off at Legislator Trotta’s office, 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, Smithtown. Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the ﬂuctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. The Art and Pleasure of Meditation Before getting into the subject, let’s divide our readers into two categories. The first are those who are faithful followers of yoga, who practice meditation regularly and find deep layers of inner peace within themselves. The second group are the many folks who have never tried meditating simply because they never had the opportunity (or desire) to pursue it. It is this group that today’s column is for. As a starter, let’s take a look at what is happening around the world today. Tensions are rising among many countries, trade wars are a real possibility, inﬂation is starting to come into play, the Federal Reserve may soon raise interest rates; that, plus the wild gyrations of the stock market, leave a host of uncertainties for many of us. Being affected by all of this, wouldn’t it be nice to have an outlet to channel these negative thoughts and events into a more calming, soothing state of mind? If so, welcome to the art and

pleasure of meditation! First off, by doing this at home, one does not need special equipment or any type of meditation room. What is necessary is a quiet room or a place in the home where you will not be interrupted. As you progress further into this skill, you will be able to take a few minutes to meditate anywhere you might be. The time spent in meditation could be as little as 5-10 minutes or up to an hour. As a starter, many people find that sitting cross-legged on the ﬂoor, both thumbs lightly touching, with hands outstretched, palms facing upward and eyes closed, is a good start. One should begin with deep breathing, inhaling, holding it for a few seconds, then slowly exhaling through the mouth. With practice, one can easily take in deeper breaths. I have found that this type of deep breathing, done 10 or 15 times, starts the cycle of relaxation and release of tension. {As a side note, I use this frequently when faced with

stressful situations, such as driving in heavy traffic. You can easily do this, keeping your eyes on the road at all times.} To aid in this process, many people prefer quietly repeating a special word that has meaning to them. Having spent much time in Asia, I chose one that I learned while studying there. A key point to remember about meditation is that, by going through the process, one insulates him or herself from everyday problems and nagging worries. Like most other things in life, one gets better with concentration and practice. At this point, let’s make one thing clear. Campuses Awarded The Arbor Day Foundation recently recognized Suffolk County Community College's three campuses as 2017 Tree Campuses USA, a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Suffolk’s 192-acre Eastern

Campus, in the core of Long Island’s pristine Pine Barrens preserve was also recognized with the award in 2016. “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as a Tree Campus USA,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “We have beautiful campuses due to the commitment to care for and nurture the diverse collection of trees on our

campuses,” McKay said. Garnering pledges from friends and family for each lap they ran, the students completed between 3035 laps around the gym. In total, Mills Pond Elementary School raised close to $15,000 to help benefit the programs and activities provided by its

PTA. Dressed in their fun run shirts, the students had teachers and staff members cheering them on as they completed each lap. After each time around the gym, they received a check mark on the back of their shirt to show their lap count.

Celebrating 30 Years For 30 years, Habitat Suffolk has empowered hundreds of families to achieve their dreams of building affordable home ownership opportunities for lower income working families on Long Island. Habitat Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 10-12 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a place to live and call home. In 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk formed by pulling together resources and congregants from the Mt. Sinai Congregational Church to start construction of the first Habitat affordable home in Riverhead for a single mother. Soon after, the Habitat Suffolk founders began developing relationships with municipalities, corporations, churches, schools, and individuals to form the organization as it is known today. The organization has built over 190 homes with five currently under construction in East Quogue, Mastic, Mastic Beach, Bellport and Bay Shore. To help celebrate

Brittany’s Baskets Brittany Schiavone, who runs the local nonprofit Brittany’s Baskets of Hope, visited with National Junior Honor Society students at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District on March 14th. The organization assembles and donates baskets for newborns around the country with Down syndrome. Schiavone, who has Down syndrome, said she started the nonprofit to welcome babies and their families to the Down syndrome family. Schiavone spoke to students about her

mission to make a change in the world and not be attached to the stereotypes that come along with different disabilities. Her organization brings information, support and guidance to families who have given birth to a baby with Down syndrome. During the last 18 months, she has sent more than 600 baskets around the United States. The baskets are filled with baby items such as onesies that read “downright perfect;” rattles, headbands, hand knitted blankets, sweaters,

hats and booties; resources and information for the parents; and a message from Brittany’s parents about the journey of raising a child with Down syndrome. Sheri Fallacaro, National Junior Honor Society adviser, was one of her former teachers and organized the presentation for the middle school students. The National Junior Honor Society members also donated items to help fill up more baskets.

Ecosystem Exam SCOPE educator John Shiels visited with fourth-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District on March 14th for a hands-on learning experience. After completing their unit on energy in the ecosystem, the students learned about food chains as

part of SCOPE’s outdoor environmental education program. Students learned about energy, different consumers and producers in the ecosystem and had to work in groups to create their own food chain. They also examined plankton using digital microscopes and tablets.

The fourth-graders viewed the microscopic ecosystem of a water droplet and learned about the food chain using plankton. The students recorded their observations and worked together to identify the different organisms found in the ocean water.
