uring the February 2014 break, Hauppauge High School’s IB Spanish, AP Spanish and Spanish 4H classes – led by Senora Aigen and Senor Kraft – traveled to Costa Rica to immerse themselves into the rich culture of Costa Rica. The students also had an opportunity to visit one of the local Costa Rican public schools to get a glimpse into how students learn in other cultures. HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

Two Smithtown students were honored by our local chapter of the Daughters of the America Revolution on March 9th, 2014. Ashley Volz, from High School East and Allison Kamel from High School West were both nominated by their teachers as

students who demonstrate the qualities of a good citizen. The students then submitted their transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal essay and a written response to an essay prompt regarding the role of one’s personal heritage

to the Daughters of the American Revolution Anna Smith Strong Chapter. Ashley Volz was selected as the winner and Allison Kamel, along with two other students from neighboring districts, received a pin, certificate and recognition.

There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, cheerful… Boy Scouts from Troop 125 were out in force on Sunday, March 2nd, participating in national call to service through the annual food drive, Scouting for Food. Canned and boxed goods were donated by community members, as the scouts requested donations shoppers at Commack’s King Kullen (Vets Hwy) and ShopRite (Crooked Hill Rd). An impressive 2,073 pounds were collected that day, which, in addition to other food collection

efforts throughout the year, made for an annual total food collection of 3,496 pounds by the scouts. The food variety included staples such as soup, tuna, assorted canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, rice, olive oil, sauces and cereals. The peanut butter and jelly collected helped restock the shelves for the Commack United Methodist Church’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang, whose customary sandwich making takes place on the first Saturday of every month and is open to anyone who wishes to help the hungry in the

This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals. The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville. Sponsored by the Islandia-based Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI), the show is open to the public and the trade. Admission is free to the show and for five public

seminars. This year marks the show’s 24th year. A seminar on energy efficiency envelopes for building and real estate industry professionals offering CEU credits is limited to the trade and will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of this seminar is $40, which includes lunch. “This year’s expo is designed to introduce residents of Long Island to our local homebuilding and contracting community in a manner that will strengthen confidence in working relationships and in knowing the best contractors on Long Island are the ones who are on the job,” said Lois, Fricke, director of operations

Hauppauge High School competed in the annual New York State DECA Career Conference in Rochester from March 4th through 7th. Brian Logan, Quick Serve Restaurant Management; Erin Stitt, Full Service Restaurant Management; and Josh Linden, Business Services Marketing, placed in the top 10 statewide in their respective categories. In total, 12 Hauppauge students competed in

various categories designed to analyze situations or problems encountered by business professionals and to react to these problems by providing recommendations or solutions using creative marketing and management skills in a role play setting. They also attended informative leadership workshops about “Dressing for Success” and “Ethics in Business.”

DECA has impacted the lives of more than ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals since it was founded in 1946. Valentines For The Troops Bretton Woods Elementary School students created special Valentine’s Day cards, which were sent to Navy Division 400 based out of NAS Lamour, California. Their Command is “Fleet Readiness Center West,” and they are the only unit that can tear down and rebuild jet engines for

the Navy in addition to supplying the entire Naval Fleet with all S414 jet engines. The Navy Division 400 spokeswoman said that it was nice for her unit to receive the Valentine’s Day cards because packages typically go out to the units that are on ships and not to those on land. So

Photo Contest Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest. Now in its 21st year, the contest offers amateur photographers an opportunity to enter photographs in ten categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student. A maximum of five entries per photographer at $5 each will be accepted. 1854, James Wickham got into an argument with one of his workers, Nicholas Behan, after Behan harassed another employee who refused to marry him. Several days after Behan’s dismissal, he crept back into the house in the dead of night. With an axe, he butchered Wickham and his wife, Frances, and fled to

Understanding The Circle Of Life

Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,

because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Essentially, the point that I am trying to make

is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good. As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for nonprofits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. The funding will also be used to coordinate non-profit and volunteer efforts - such as mucking, gutting and debris removal - and operate the disaster recovery and housing facility. The center will serve as the command center for rebuildingrelated activities by Long Island long term recovery groups, and will include a kitchen, warehouse, office spaces and meeting rooms. “Over the past year, the American Red Cross has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to helping the most vulnerable on Long Island recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy,” said Gwen O’Shea, president/ CEO of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. “With its latest efforts, the Red Cross is also reaffirming its confidence in the nonprofit sector to harness the power of volunteers to assist storm survivors. Quiz Bowl Champions Team members Daniel Lee, Samuel Petruzzi, Anoop Singh, Muzaffer Tasoglu, and Amay Varaganti will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl on April 24th-28th. The entire competition and travel expenses are funded by the Department of Energy. The U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl® tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics.

During the February 2014 break, Hauppauge High School’s IB Spanish, AP Spanish and Spanish 4H classes – led by Senora Aigen and Senor Kraft – traveled to Costa Rica to immerse themselves into the rich culture of Costa Rica. Over the course of nine days, the students traveled from the mountainous urban sprawl of San Jose, to the bright Arenal Volcano Area, to the lush Cloud Forest, and even to

the beautiful white sand Pacific beaches at Manuel Antonio National Park. “From horseback riding, to zip-lining, to preparing traditional Costa Rican food, there was never a dull moment in this beautiful country,” described Hauppauge High School Junior James Bie. The students also had an opportunity to visit one of the local Costa Rican public schools to get a glimpse into how students learn in other cultures.

The Hauppauge students bonded with their Costa Rican counterparts by engaging in their daily school activities as well as playing a friendly, competitive soccer game. “Between the wonderful food, people, countryside, and the friends made along the way, this learning experience has been an unforgettable journey into a bold and familiar, yet different, culture than our own,” stated Bie.

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta presented proclamations to the three newest Eagle Scouts of Troop 301: Spenser Jamison Ochs, Thomas Dennis Harrington and Zachary Alexander Zwergel. Spencer Jameson Ochs of St. James did his Eagle Scout Project at the St. James Lutheran’s Church, where his troop meets. He converted an unused room at the preschool into a nursery and was responsible for cleaning it out, painting and installing new cabinets and a countertop. He also replaced the dropdown ceiling and installed new moisture resistant

floor molding. It is now a functioning nursery and multipurpose room. Thomas Dennis Harrington of Smithtown was asked by Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown to improve their “Outdoor Discovery Area” for his Eagle Project. Thomas built a new storage unit to store items that are used in the outdoor programs and also installed new directional signs at the Center. Thomas held a carwash to raise money for his project and donated the remaining $636 to Sweetbriar. Zachary Alexander Zwergel of Centereach is a third generation Eagle Scout. For his project, he

constructed and erected four new weather proof outdoor announcement boards for the Cornell Cooperative Farm’s showgrounds in Yaphank. He raised the necessary funds by selling Yankee Candles and presented the Farm with a check for $266 for the excess funds he earned. Legislator Trotta said, “This is a very proud moment for these young men and their families, as well as their troop leaders and fellow scouts. I extend my congratulations to all of them for being outstanding community leaders and hope that they will remain active in their respective communities.”
