Beware IRS Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco wants residents to be on alert for tax season scammers who may attempt to obtain copies of your W-2 forms, file your taxes and steal your refunds. This may happen in the form of official sounding phone calls asking you or your employer for copies of W-2s, or through email phishing scams that ask for personal and employmentrelated information. If you receive such an e-mail, report it to the Internal Revenue Service by sending a copy to phishing@irs.gov with “W-2 Scam” in the subject line. You can also call the special hotline set up by the Treasury Inspector General’s Office at 800.366.4484 or visit them online at https:// www.treasury.gov/tigta/

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

These callers can be very aggressive and typically threaten to arrest people who do not meet their demands. Here are five tactics that scammers often use but the IRS will not do. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately. If you do owe federal taxes, or think you might owe taxes, simply call the IRS at 800.829.1040. IRS workers will answer any questions. The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card. • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Kindergarten students at Smithtown Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently participated in a teddy bear clinic. Nurses from Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital visited with the

students to teach them about basic first aid, safety practices and help ease the fear of doctors and hospitals. Each student brought his/her favorite stuffed animal to practice and learned ways to stay safe.

Caring for Bears The students enjoyed diagnosing their animals and used a Band-Aid to fix a wound. They also learned songs to help them brush their teeth, wear a helmet and wash their hands.

Good Deeds Project

The students in Ms. Goldman’s fifth grade class at Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack are paying it forward to help others through their “good deeds.” They were assisted and motivated by John Feal and his FealGood Foundation. The children worked in teams to perform their good deeds, planning and soliciting parental support for their projects. Landon, Nick, Ilana, Crystal and Shubhan tied on their aprons and baked goods to sell at a bake sale. They used the money raised to buy pet supplies and donate them to Little

Shelter in Huntington. Emily, Michaela, Julian, Bobby, Lindsay, Talia, Keira, Madison, Billal, and Sebastian also donated money and supplies to Little Shelter, raised by operating a donation station outside of Pet Friends in Commack one cold winter day. Vasili, Luca, Jadyn, Isabelle, and Manik walked their neighborhood collecting non-perishable food items. They then delivered their donation to Island Harvest Food Bank, which is Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. Carson, Emily, James,

Nick, Taylor, and Adriana decided to work with special needs children at Sawmill. They spent every lunch period for three weeks eating and playing with the students in one of our special education classes. Even though the project is over, the friendships forged have lasted! We would like to extend a special thank you to the families of our students who gave of their time to help us contribute to our community and to Pet Friends, Island Harvest, and Little Shelter who helped the students get this done!

Four Commack High School students were named Presidential Scholars Candidates, recognized as some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Congratulations to Zack Abrams, Christine Kim,

Joshua Mann, and Matthew Wu (not in photo), whose academic achievement and exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT exams qualifies them to seek finalist status as one of 161 United States Presidential Scholars. Notification will be made in April of this year.

Since 1964, this unique federal program has honored more than 7,000 students who have demonstrated scholarship, leadership, artistic excellence, and selfless service to others.

Exceptional Achievement

The Commack School District is delighted to announce that four of our students are regional winners in the 2016-2017 Toshiba/ NSTA ExploraVision competition. Ninth graders Louis Viglietta, Kimberly Liao, Christine Kong and Michael Parrinello won for their team project, “Scat Scan: The Future of Microbiome Analysis.” The team was one of 24 Regional winners, chosen from thousands of entries from across the United States and Canada. As regional winners, the school will receive a Toshiba laptop, an engraved plaque, and a banner. Each team member and science teacher and mentor Richard Kurtz receive a portable hard drive and framed certificates. “Having one of the six top teams for the Toshiba Exploravision competition is mind boggling to me,” said science teacher and mentor Richard Kurtz. “These four ninth grade students were totally dedicated, independent,

and creative in developing a method that projects a technology twenty years into the future. The project idea envisions modifying the commonly used toilet to enable it to check a person’s natural internal bacterial populations by analyzing human waste, allowing the information to be used as a strong indicator of a person’s health.” While the subject may be a bit off-putting, the idea relies on the study of DNA and genetics. The device envisions a retractable arm that sends a sample to a miniature glass microfluidic computer chip, which will extract DNA, then isolate the prokaryotic 16S ribosomal RNA gene using PCR amplification and sequencing. Results are sent to the user’s smartphone, providing “fast, clean, and convenient data about their microbiome health.” The team is advancing to the Nationals, and the next round of the competition requires creating a

prototype of their project and a website for a chance to compete in Washington, D.C. in June for additional prizes totaling up to a $10,000 savings bond. In addition to our regional winners, two other teams at Commack High School also received Honorable Mention (top 10%) in the competition: ninth grade students Theresa Haupt, Sarah O’Conner, and Maheen Naseem for their project: “3D Regeneration of Body Parts and Organs,” and tenth graders Aria Eghbali, and Yeil Kim for their project: “ActiveBrain - A Wearable Device to Monitor Brain Activity.” “We commend our teams of young scientists and inventors for the caliber and depth of the research that went into the creation of these concepts,” said Dr. Donald James, Superintendent of Commack Schools, “and congratulate them on receiving recognition for their work in such a prestigious competition.”

USGA Championship Office to Open Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by local officials, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and representatives from the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club to announce the opening of the USGA Championship offices in the Village of Southampton in advance of the 2018 U.S. Open. The Championship will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on June 14th-17th, 2018. Suffolk County and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club previously hosted the U.S. Open in 1896, 1986, 1995 and 2004. The USGA also recently announced that the U.S. Open will return to Shinnecock Hills in 2026. “I applaud the USGA for having boots on the ground well in advance of the 2018 USGA

Championship,” stated County Executive Steve Bellone. “Charlie Howe, USGA Championship Director, along with other USGA officials have already engaged in planning with the Town and Village of Southampton and the Suffolk County Departments of Economic Development and Planning and Public Works. The Shinnecock Hills Golf Course is one of the best in the world and we are happy to host the U.S. Open in Suffolk County.” Shinnecock Hills is one of the oldest formal organized golf clubs in the United States (1891) and also holds the title of the oldest golf clubhouse in the U.S. (1892). All members of LITF are eligible to participate on an individual basis and are awarded points according to how high their score is in their age group. Suffolk Marathon Set Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced Monday that the expanded Catholic Health Services third annual Suffolk County Marathon will take place Sunday October 29th, starting and ending in Patchogue. The marathon, half marathon, 5K and newly added marathon relay races support organizations serving veterans living in Suffolk County. The race is also a qualifier for the 2019 Boston Marathon. The 2016 race, with 2,677 registered runners, raised $140,000 for veterans’ organizations. “This event is a great opportunity to support the veterans who have sacrificed so much to our community,” the County Executive said. “Because of these races, we are able to bring a spotlight onto their contributions and raise funds that will provide services for veterans in need.” The race will also feature a GPS application that will allow people to

track the progress of their favorite runners. The new relay race will be made up of four-member teams running the full marathon. A Freedom Fest, featuring musical entertainment, and the Taste of Long Island Festival, featuring foods, wines and beers from Long Island, will follow the start of the race. “Catholic Health Services (CHS) is proud once again to be the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor for the 3rd Annual Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon and partner with Suffolk County, Hunter EMS and Progressive Emergency Physicians to provide race medicine for this landmark event,” said CHS President & CEO Alan Guerci, MD. “More importantly, CHS is proud to continue its support of Suffolk County’s veterans.” “The Suffolk County Marathon provides us with another opportunity to showcase our beautiful downtowns along the

Among them was Matt Harbin of Kings Park, who raised $1,500 for research on Epidermolyis Bullosa, a group of inherited connective tissue diseases that cause severe blisters in the skin. Registration to Begin The Smithtown Youth Bureau is now registering for their 8th annual Global Youth Service Day event (GYSD) for Smithtown, Kings Park, Hauppauge and Commack school districts, grades K-12. The event will be held on Saturday, April 22nd, at the Smithtown Landing Country Club. Registration is required for this FREE family program. Students & family members must register by March 31st, and space is limited for this event. No prior volunteer experience is required to participate in GYSD, although there is an option to apply for a Town of Smithtown Outstanding Volunteer Award, when registering. Awards will be presented at the April 22nd

event. Global Youth Service Day is a campaign by Youth Service America (YSA) and is a worldwide event of activism that empowers youth to speak up and take action in their part of the world. Any young person who lives or attends school in Smithtown Township can participate in this local day of family service to celebrate National Global Youth Service Day. At this event, students and family members will have the opportunity to personally thank local Police Officers, Firefighters and other Emergency Responder honored guests, meet other students and families from throughout the township and enjoy a continental breakfast.

Participants will also prepare personalized Thank You Cards that will be sent to local Emergency Responders. Winners of the recent town-wide Youth Bureau Letter Writing Contest will receive awards at the event, as well. Nearly 400 students throughout the Town of Smithtown submitted letters to thank local Police, Firefighters and other Emergency Responders, all of which will be mailed, after judging is completed. Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 1st, at Belmont Lake State Park. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce the family to the sport. No license is needed to participate. Festival visitors can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long

Island and local fishing clubs, try fishing for trout, participate in the casting contest, and more.” Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and is free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and a number of local fishing clubs will have a display and demonstration area, and participants are urged to try their hand at fly casting. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants

are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if they have it. Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m. and include an inflatable slide (weather dependent), the “Spring Fling” casting contest, and hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program, OPRHP, the Fisherman Magazine, and The Natural Heritage Trust. To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics and allowing more New Yorkers to experience

fishing for the first time with increased DEC free fishing clinics throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to enable more people to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, under the 2016-2017 budget, provides $3 million for State land access projects and $4 million for hunting and fishing infrastructure. The Spring Fishing Festival is a designated Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older is suspended for this event. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking

program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC and OPRHP will stock Belmont Lake with close to 4,000 brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, as well as 17 other Long Island lakes, will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
