According to the EYH Network, girls become most interested in these areas of study when they are in middle school. This season, SBPLI had 110 elementary and middle school teams compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments; of those teams, 13 teams were fully comprised of Girl Scouts from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. “It is encouraging to see girls and young women take part in our robotics programs, especially

Mark your calendars! Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center Inc. will be holding its 13th Annual Evening for the Love of Animals Fur Ball 2014 on April 3rd. The event will be held at Flowerfield Celebrations Catering, located at 199 Mills Pond Road in St. James from 7 to 11 p.m. The honorees for this year’s Fur Ball will be Mark Lesko, Executive Director, Accelerate LI; Gail Waller and Wendy Waller. The Fur Ball event was organized to bring people together who share a common bond: an undying love for animals. The money raised will be used to continue SaveA-Pet’s commitment to programs such as saving lives of homeless animals, pet adoption, spaying and neutering, feral cat TNR

(trap, neuter and return), humane education and public awareness. The dress code for the elegant ball is casual, smart attire and will include a silent auction, raffles, open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert, and live music. In addition, there will be a cocktail performance by harpist Ryan Taliercio. Tickets for the event are $150 per guest, $250 per couple, and $1,500 for a table of ten. The Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for everyone to celebrate the arrival of spring by planting trees. Join the Arbor Day Foundation in March 2014 and receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees. “White flowering dogwoods will add beauty to your home throughout the year,” said John Rosenow, founder the chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dogwoods are known for their showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage and red berries that attract songbirds during winter.” The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for Americas campaign. The Hauppauge School District is proud to announce that four students were named as semifinalists of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), which was held on February 10, 2014. They are Chris Giuliano, Allison Lee, Luke Farrell and Sarah Jacobs. The four students will compete in the second round of the LISEF competition on March 13. The semifinalists are listed below with the categories they competed in and the names of their projects. Pygmy Goats Welcomed

On February 22nd, two tiny pygmy goats were born on the grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. They are expected to be a highlight throughout many of the camp’s sessions this summer, due to their irresistible cuteness. The goats’ sexes are yet to be determined and therefore, they do not have names. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck employees are considering initiating a naming contest

to enhance the fun. It has been noted that since they were born on February 22nd, the day we honor George Washington, one may be named George or, if appropriate, Georgie Girl! If you answer yes to both questions the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department may be able to help. “One of our goals is to enable Smithtown senior citizens to remain safely in the comfort of their own homes.” says Laura Greif, Program Director at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department. “We offer a wide variety of home based programs and services to senior residents.” One such program,

the Expanded In-Home Services for the Elderly Program [EISEP] provides homemaker services to Smithtown senior citizens age 60 and older. Homeaides perform light duties such as shopping, laundry and housekeeping. All homemakers serving our seniors are employees of the Town of Smithtown. The Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides case management to all recipients. Fees for EISEP are income based, on a sliding scale, and funding is provided by the Town of Smithtown.

Seniors receiving Medicaid assistance are not eligible for EISEP. As the weather gets warmer, it is easy to let seasonal moments pass us by. For instance, the glory associated with St. John the Baptist’s High School Rowing is heightened going into spring season. Getting on the water is a long-awaited break from the monotony of winter training. Thankfully, our team is bigger and better than ever. With a handful of standouts, backed up by a strong base of rowers, SJB is certainly in the hunt for a State Championship win this year. Although we have not been the most competitive team in recent years, a newfound drive and

revamped training staff seem to be the key to a winning season. For those who don’t know, Rowing is an historic sport that tests both the mind and the body. As a four year Varsity rower, I know as well as any of my teammates just how dedicated one has to be to excel in this sport. Although I am far from elite, Rowing is becoming increasingly competitive. With an abundance of college scholarship money available for top rowers, the race for supremacy is grueling. Long workouts on the rowing machine give rowers the edge that they crave when spring season rolls around.

It is no secret that the basis for a winning team is proper training during the winter. For rowers, this season functions as the offseason. An old adage states that “races are won in the winter.” Essentially, the better prepared group will come out on top. There is no feeling comparable to passing another boat. In that moment, it becomes evident that the faster team simply wants it more. Without preparation, that win could not be possible. As we barrel into Spring, don’t let moments like this pass you by. Make the most out of the season, and life as a whole.

But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Recognition Awards of Hauppauge, the JCOS Religious Adviser. Dirk Smith, the Suffolk County Council (BSA) Executive and CEO, addressed the attendees and praised the involvement and commitment of the Jewish Committee. In addition, JCOS member and SCC Assistant Council Commissioner Andy Calev collected funds as a Friends of Scouting donation by the Jewish Committee and to help with repairs to the Jewish Chapel at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Keynote Speaker was JCOS Chairperson Emeritus Bruce Streger, who spoke about the chapel at Baiting Hollow Boy Scout camp, the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, the upcoming Jewish Conclave (June 6th through 8th) and the North East Regional Jewish Committee Conference on March 23rd. During special

ceremonies, presentations of medals and certificates were made by JCOS Chairman Emeritus Bruce Streger and Cub Scout Religious Emblems Coordinator Jan Rose of the Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council to those scouts who had recently earned their recognitions. The scouts’ parents assisted in the ceremonies by pinning the emblems onto the youth’s uniforms. Presentations were the Aleph Emblem to Cub Scout Maxwell A. of Pack 120 (Port Jefferson Station) and Ner Tamid Emblem to Boy Scout Matthew Finkelstein of Smithtown of Boy Scout Troop 360 (Greenlawn). Each scout was given comic books and scouting patches to take home. All in attendance received a special JCOS Annual Awards and Recognitions Breakfast commemorative patch.

MEDLEY RELAY - The Smithtown Swim Team participated in the swim meet hosted at Webster High School in Rochester, February 28th through March 1st. Smithtown High School East senior Ben Cono won the New York State Championship in the 100 yard breaststroke by shattering the State record with a time of 54.72 seconds. East junior Matt De Vito finished 9th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55:61 and 6th in the 100 Fly with a time of 51.69, both school records. Representing Smithtown in the 200 Medley Relay, the East team of Matt Brennan, Ben Cono , Graham Cono and Matt De Vito finished 7th with a new school record of 1:37:66 in the 200 Medley Relay.

There were 37 Scouts, Scouters and family members in attendance at the annual JCOS of Suffolk County Council’s Awards and Recognitions Breakfast on March 2nd, hosted by Temple Beth Chai located in Hauppauge. A hearty bagel, cream cheese and lox breakfast was served. They were even treated to some pickled herring. Elliot Klugman of the SCC JCOS and the National/NE Region JCOS gave the invocation, opening prayers, blessing over the bread and the closing prayer. Welcome was made by JCOS Chair Barry Kopeloff. After going through the security gates at the facility, Boy Scout Troop 343’s members, adult leaders and parents followed their

host and guide, Deputy Patrick Quinn of the United States Marshal’s Service, for a tour of the Federal Courthouse in Central

Islip on February 21st. The tour of the facility included a visit to the Prisoners’ Holding area, a tour of the surveillance

protection and protecting the Federal Judges and the Federal Prosecutors. The youths had a discussion with the Honorable Judge Leonard D. Wexler, District Court Judge, in his Judge’s Chambers, where the scouts were able to ask questions, get information and learn about the Federal Justice System. Following a group photo with Judge Wexler, he allowed each of them to sit in his seat in the courtroom, in order to get a true view of what he sees when he is sitting on a case. They were invited to sit in the Jury Box during a Bail Hearing, as Judge

Wexler made a decision in this “live action, real live case.” When it was over and the people involved had left, he spoke with the scouts, listening to their responses and answering questions about the participation of the lawyers and the judgment that was made in this case. At the end of the tour, each scout was presented with a binder from the United States Marshal’s Service, which included a pamphlet about the USMS. They also had an opportunity to take a tour of the Court Stenographer’s Museum located in the Federal Courthouse Lobby.
