The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

A Saint Who’s Not A Saint

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

Getting Acquainted With Native American Ways Fourth graders at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in a day of hands-on learning activities thanks to a program from Journeys Into American Indian Territory. The lessons were a perfect pairing with the fourth grade social studies unit on the Eastern

Woodlands. After a grade level assembly, students broke up into different learning stations for the hands-on portion of the day. The students examined Native American artifacts, walked through a longhouse and learned about the hunting ways of the men in the tribes. They also learned the role of the women and

children, and about the tools they used for making clothing. The Native American children had a bit of fun. The Accompsett students listened to different tales of the tribe while sitting on deerskin rugs and also tried some of the different Native American games.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone invites residents who have pre-diabetes or are at high risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate in Suffolk County’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The program is based a study led by the National Institutes of Health that showed that making modest lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent in people at high risk for diabetes. The program, conducted by the Department of Health Services, will meet one hour per week, for 16 weeks, followed by monthly follow-up sessions.

In addition to the main event at each station there was a secondary activity to entertain as well as instruct. On Sunday morning, following the “Scout’s Own” interfaith services, the Troops pushed their wheel-mounted “Klondike” sleds in hopes of receiving the best time. These “machines” are colorful, Troop-personality vehicles that are outfitted with skis (just in case there is snow) as well as wheels. Top winner for the Sled Race were Troop 343 (Hauppauge) “Billy Goats. After the Great Sled Race, everyone gathered in the Mess Hall for presentation of ribbons to the top six Troops at each station. A half dozen Boy Scout Troops hosted the annual Matinecock District’s 2020 Winter Camporee at Baiting Hollow Scout Reservation over a weekend in mid-January. The Winter Camporee (formerly known as the Klondike and Polar Bear) is a winter event for Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews in the district. The competition covers scout skills and scout spirit. This year’s theme was “Many Slices, One Pie” Participating as 27 different patrols from 17 Boy Scout Troops, there were three Girl units (“troop#G”) at the 2020 Polar Bear Camporee. With 265 Scouts and their scouting volunteer leaders participating, the six event stations were hosted by Boy Scouts of Troop 539 (Kings Park), Troop 218 G (Huntington, Girl Troop), Troop 218 B (Huntington, Boy Troop), Troop 106 (Melville), Troop 125 (Commack) and Troop 360 Greenlawn). This program offers those who are at risk for diabetes an excellent

opportunity to learn more about preventing diabetes and living a full life.” The classes cover lifestyle changes, including increasing physical activity and improving food choices. Participants work toward goals that lead to the prevention or delay of a diabetes diagnosis. A trained lifestyle coach will facilitate the class in a

small group setting. According to the New York State Department of Health, diabetes is the most rapidly growing chronic disease of our time, affecting one out of every 12 adults in New York. Minority populations are at high risk, especially those who are African American, Latino, Native American and Asian American.

Diabetes puts the body at risk for many serious health conditions, including heart disease, eye problems, kidney disease, poor blood flow, amputations and complications of pregnancy if it is not properly controlled. “The good news is that moderate changes in lifestyle can help you to restore your blood

On Wednesday evening, February 26th, representing more than 25 troops, more than 60 Scouts, their parents, and volunteer scouting leaders gathered at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport for a 90-minute seminar on achieving Eagle Scout rank. The seminar was entitled “Life to Eagle” and was provided by the Matinecock District, Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America. Life Rank is the immediate rank before Eagle Scout rank, and most of the Scouts attending had already worked for years to achieve Life Scout rank.

The seminar was led by Matinecock District Advancement Chair David Hunt, who himself is an Eagle Scout. Assisting were Advancement Committee members, Joe Pokorny, John Napoli, and Mark Guadioso, as well as District Commissioner, George Smith. Participants were led through the Eagle Scout Service Project, a community service project that takes an average of 9 to 12 months for an Eagle Scout candidate to complete. “Nationwide, only 4% of Boy Scouts achieve the lofty rank of Eagle Scout, “ explained Mr. Hunt.

SYJCC offer programs and community classes to the special needs communities 7 days per week to ages 5 through adulthood through its Butler Center. The Butler Center has been providing respite care to families of children with special needs since the early 1990â€™s. Since then, the Center has expanded to offer weekend programs, such as but not limited to respite programs and community classes where individuals attending can learn a variety of innovative skills. Servicing approximately 250 children and adults throughout the year, the SYJCC is a place where such children and individuals are able to

participate in multiple programs through the department. As an allinclusive environment, the SYJCC is thrilled to be hosting such an incredible event in support of the Butler Center.
