Northport High School had 68 winners during the recent Northeast Regional Scholastic Art Awards. There were many students who receive more than one honor, including some across multiple categories and levels. The seven Gold Key recipients will move onto the National Scholastic Competition. In 2014, more than 255,000 submissions were entered. At the regional level approximately 5-7 percent of the submissions received Regional Gold Keys, 7-10 percent received Silver Keys and 10-15 percent received Honorable Mentions. Gold Key works are included in national-level judging. Approximately 5-7 percent of these works receive national recognition. In 2014, 2,000 National Medals were awarded (Northport had three winners). The district would like to congratulate those honored on their impressive accomplishments.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million
free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free

While the tires and wheels should be visually inspected as soon as possible, you should know there could be damage to the steering, suspension and alignment systems that you can’t see. To help determine if hitting a pothole has damaged your vehicle, watch for these warning signs: • Loss of control, swaying when making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets or bouncing excessively on rough roads. These indicate that key safetyrelated systems—the steering and suspension— may have been damaged. They largely determine your car’s ride and handling. Key components are shocks and struts, the steering knuckle, ball
joints, the steering rack or box, bearings, seals and hub units, and tie rod ends. • Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, and uneven tire wear. These mean an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for safe handling and longlasting tires. • Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls, or dents in the rim. These problems should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road. “If you’ve hit a pothole and suspect that there may be damage to the tires, wheels, steering and suspension, or wheel alignment,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council, “it’s
worth having a professional technician check out the car and make any necessary repairs.” As a general rule of thumb, he advises, steering and suspension systems should be checked at least once a year and wheels should be aligned at the same interval. Motorists who drive in areas where potholes are common should be prepared to have these systems checked more frequently. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. The Diocese of Rockville Centre today announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Education, Diocese of Rockville Centre (the “Education Corporation”). Mr. Christopher Marblo will assume responsibility for Catholic Elementary and High School leadership as the new CEO of the Education Corporation, which provides services, support and guidance to those schools operated in connection with the Catholic-school ministry of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Mr. Marblo brings diverse and deep expertise in education, administration, marketing, fund raising, strategic and fiscal management, leadership, constituent relations and institutional advocacy. The new position will report to the board of the Education Corporation. Ursuline Sister Joanne Callahan will continue to serve as superintendent until July 1st, 2015, when Mr. Marblo will assume his

David Schwidenback, the president of Pedals for Progress, says the collection on April 18th will be sent to FIDESMA, a non-profit, nonpolitical, non-religious development foundation in Chimaltenango Guatemala. Says Schwidenback, “The Long Island Returned Peace Corps volunteers have been integral to the success of Pedals for Progress by effectively recycling the bicycles and sewing machines of Long Island. Of the many organizations that collect bicycles annually, the LIRPCV collections have consistently been the most successful. Their efforts have lifted thousands of people permanently from poverty in Central America, Africa and Eastern Europe.”
“We see this as one way to continue to contribute,” says Kathy Williams Ging. “As a volunteer in Peru I saw firsthand what a big difference having a bicycle or sewing machine can make in someone’s life.” Brian Richardson of Middle Island, who served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, feels that the collection done each year by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Longisland fit in well with the philosophy of the Peace Corps. “The Peace Corps is not about doing for people; it’s about helping people to become their own agents of change.” Bikes should be rust free. Bikes with flat tires in need of some repair are accepted. No tricycles. Sewing machines in working condition are also accepted. Each person who donates also will be asked to donate $10 per bike (taxdeductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles. Volunteers spend the day discussing the successes of last year and preparing goals for the upcoming summer and host recruitment season. Over the course of the long weekend, yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of Long Island yarn shops. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, Dan Gasby, have been named keynote speakers for its 11th Annual Alzheimer’s Education Conference & Expo 2015 on March 26th at the Melville Marriott Long Island, located at 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville. B. Smith was recently diagnosed with youngonset Alzheimer’s disease, which affects those under the age of 65. The couple will discuss her struggles with Alzheimer’s disease and how they are coping and supporting each other during this difficult time. Ms. Smith is a restaurateur, author, and multi-industry businesswoman. She has been heralded by The New York Times as “a Renaissance woman,” by Chuck Scarborough as a “domestic goddess,” and by The New York Daily News as “one of the most important AfricanAmerican style mavens of all time.” She is a broadcast talent, entrepreneurial
spokesperson and multiple award-winning recipient across a wide range of fields. Ms. Smith also earned kudos when she returned to the stage in her Off-Broadway debut in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” the awardwinning play by Nora and Delia Ephron. In 2012, Ms. Smith was inducted into the American Chef Corps, part of the U.S. Department of State’s newly formed Diplomatic Culinary Partnership with the James Beard Foundation. Mr. Gasby serves as the Chairman of B. Smith Enterprises, Ltd., and has an extensive background in television, marketing and production. Formerly, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby were co-hosts at “The B. 500. It’s a pretty big number. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that
it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete. L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana. When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”
SAHIL KAPOOR • LINDENHURST L’Damian and his brothers were automatically forced into adulthood. They decided that they would remain living together. LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home. L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri. In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping
HIGH SCHOOL his family together. Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts. That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins. L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward. If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too. He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

WALK FOR BEAUTY DONATION - Stony Brook University Cancer Center received a donation of $50,000 yesterday, proceeds which were raised from the 21st Annual Walk for Beauty. The Walk for Beauty has raised more than over $1.275 million for cancer research since its inception in 1994. Funds also help pay for wigs and prostheses for cancer patients. The event is an all-volunteer initiative with no administrative costs. All proceeds stay in the community to benefit cancer research at Stony Brook.
Two Suffolk County Community College adjunct professors are recipients of Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching for Academic Year 2014-2015. The award recognizes consistently superior teaching at the graduate, undergraduate, or professional level. Suffolk’s Kelliann Schrage Flores, assistant professor of Foreign Language, Humanities and Women Studies and Krystyna Janicka-Wlodek, assistant professor of Mathematics were among 48 award recipients from 30 colleges and universities state-wide it
was announced by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The Chancellor’s Award confirms what we have known all along,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This recognition is a systemwide acknowledgment of the contributions and dedication to high quality education by our adjunct teaching faculty.” Chancellor’s Awards are presented annually in seven categories: Faculty Service, Librarianship, Professional Service, Scholarship and Creative Activities, Teaching, Classified Service, and

The Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are Systemlevel honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. Principal’s Gala Holy Trinity Diocesan High School will be holding their 3rd Annual Principal’s Gala on April 16th at the beautiful Carltun at Eisenhower Park. This is the school’s annual major fundraising event and as part of this program, the school honors members of their community who live the school’s mission by: inspiring students/staff within the very walls of our school; carrying it with them to the world beyond Cherry Lane; and, perhaps most importantly, around their family dinner table.” Rev. Patrick Flanagan, CM ‘83, will be the recipient of this year’s “Holy Trinity Living Witness & Faith Award.” Fr. Pat reminds anyone who asks that he grew up in Wantagh, “the Gateway to Jones Beach” and first attended St. Frances de Chantal in Wantagh. Following in the footsteps of his brothers Billy ’72 and Jimmy ’74, Patrick attended Holy Trinity and his nephew Matthew Buoneto graduated in ’01. After high school, Patrick attended Niagara University and then Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pennsylvania interrupted for a year of Novitiate in
the Germantown section of Philadelphia. As the Seminary closed in 1990, Patrick continued his formation at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York where he was awarded a Masters in Divinity. Ordained at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Germantown in 1992, Fr. Pat was assigned to parochial work at Immaculate Conception Church in Germantown. After two years, he returned to Niagara University and served as Campus Minister. In 1998, Fr. Pat pursued doctoral studies in theological etherics at DePaul University and was awarded a doctorate in 2007. Fr. Pat was assigned to teaching at St. John’s University in 2003. Since 2003, he has taught primarily moral theology courses in the university’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies and has served as the Superior of the Vincentian community at St. John’s University since 2009. For the past year, Fr. Pat has served Holy Trinity on its Principal’s Advisory Board bringing to the board his experience as a board member of Niagara
University, HeartShare Inc., Vincentian Solidarity Office, and the Society of Christian Ethics. The “Dominican Sisters Award for Parental Commitment to Catholic Education & Mission” will be presented to the Gallant Family of West Hempstead who has supported Holy Trinity since 2009, putting their daughter Brianna (Class of 2013) and their son, Joe (Class of 2015) through the school. During this time, the Gallants have been very active members of the Titan Parent Club and Mrs. Gallant has been actively involved with several fundraising projects for the school. When they sent their children to Trinity Mr. Don Gallant says, “They went in as good kids, for which we were blessed, and they came out as incredible young adults. We could not have asked for Brianna and Joe to receive a better education or experience. As a parent or a child, ‘Once a Titan always a Titan’! We are very proud to be Titans and plan to remain active within the school for as long as they will have us.” English teacher Mrs. Mary Ellen Martin will be
receiving the “Sisters of Mercy Award for Service & Dedication to Mission”. Mrs. Martin’s dedication to Catholic education started during her high school years at Maria Regina in Uniondale. Mary Ellen went on to Pace University to receive a BA in English (theatre arts concentration) and Stony Brook to get an MA in Literature. Her inevitable journey to Holy Trinity came almost 30 years ago as a mid-year replacement in the English Department. Since then, Mary Ellen’s love of teaching led her to co-create Trinity’s esteemed Writing Program. Educational Technology magazine featured the program in an article highlighting the use of computer labs in teaching the writing process. What started as an elective for eleventh graders is now home to writing courses for all grade levels. Other activities that have kept Mary Ellen busy are her duties as co-moderator of the Student Council, oversight of the Holy Trinity Academic Challenge Club and the coordinator of the SMART program, a study skills program for incoming freshmen
students. Residing in Bellmore, Mary Ellen and her husband John are the very proud parents of two children, and HT alumni, Kelly ‘10 and Christopher ‘14. The “Distinguished Alumnus” award will be given to Mr. Emil Rensing, Class of 1992. Mr. Rensing began his professional career in 1995 at AOL beginning as an engineer and later heading a Global Strategic Development Group. His team was responsible for launching AOL service/ AOL.com, Match.com, Moviefone, MapQuest, AOL Instant Messenger and others. Leaving AOL in 2000, he started a media management consulting firm with a colleague and together they developed several major media and marketing transformations. Their clients included MTV, AOL Time-Warner, Victoria’s Secret PINK, and WWE among others. In 2006, Mr. Rensing launched what became the #1 online video company, Next New Networks, that produced the most watched regular “TV” programming online. By 2011, Next New delivered over 4
billion video views to over 200MM viewers globally. As co-founder and Chief Digital Officer of Studio 3 Partners, a joint venture between Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate Films and MGM, he oversees digital products and programming at EPIX, the fastest-to-profitable cable network in history. When not focusing on his day jobs, Mr. Rensing enjoys racing with Scuderia Niosi and Sam Yau Racing in the Italian WRC & Porsche Carrera Cup, flying wherever he has time to go, sailing the Southern Caribbean seas, and enjoying family. On February 12th, the Rotary Club of The Moriches honored the members of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws at its annual dinner at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s dining hall for their hard work in the raising of funds for the camp. The Squaws raised $165,000 for Camp PaQua-Tuck over the past year. The Squaws are a group of more than 30 women who meet once a month to discuss, plan, and execute
fundraisers for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a resident summer camp for children and young adults with special needs, in Center Moriches. They are also responsible for hosting the annual Spooky Walk at the camp. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and young adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum
independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment, even offering an alumni week for campers who have aged out. Throughout the program, campers participate in typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Faces Of The Race Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the launch of “Faces of the Race,” a campaign to highlight runners registered for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon in Support of Veterans on September 13th. “Many of these runners have compelling stories, have overcome adversity or personal challenges to compete,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Some are running to honor members of the military or people lost in the September 11th terror attacks. Others are signed up for this first Suffolk marathon so they can be a part of history. We welcome everyone to join this marathon, which highlights the scenic beauty and the buzzing downtowns of Suffolk County.” The County
Executive also will run the full marathon. The “Faces of the Race” feature will appear regularly on the Suffolk Marathon website at suffolkmarathon.com and on Facebook, www. facebook.com/stevebellone Among the hundreds of registered marathoners so far are Pete Hawkins of Malverne, a wheelchair champion racer who has competed in marathons around the world, and Erin Henderson, a former Long Islander who now lives in Wyoming with her husband and 12 children. Also running are Staff Sgt. Joshua Gravett, an Army recruiter in Selden, and Joi Jackson-Perle of Wainscott, who is running in honor of Lance Cpl. Jordan Haerter from Sag Harbor, who was killed in Iraq in 2008. The races will raise funds
to expand and enhance veterans’ services in Suffolk County. It also is a last-chance qualifier for the Boston marathon. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism toward downtowns along the Great South Bay. The race, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, will begin and end at Heckscher State Park in East Islip with a Taste of Long Island wine and food festival to end race festivities. Suffolk County has partnered with New York State to host this inaugural event. For some race participants, the Suffolk marathon is their first full marathon, while other registrants have been competing in marathons, tough mudder races and triathlons for years.

In recognition of The Fresh Air Fund’s 139th summer of bringing together New York City children and volunteer host families in New York, Governor Cuomo has recognized March 20th as “Fresh Air Fund Day” throughout the state. This summer, The Fresh Air Fund will once again allow thousands of inner-city boys and girls to escape the hot, noisy New York City streets to enjoy the simple joys of summertime fun in the country! Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program open their
hearts and homes to New York City children in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in the Western Suffolk area to celebrate our 139th summer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the starfilled skies.” Volunteers simply want

to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are invited to visit the same host families year after year. First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and all it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million innercity children since 1877.
