This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

Suffolk Presiding Officer Calarco, Legislators, County Officials, Families Mark Opening of COVID-19 Memorial Project Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, alongside his colleagues and county officials, stood with families on Monday, March 1st, 2021 to mark the opening of a memorial project dedicated to Suffolk County residents who have lost their lives to COVID-19. The Suffolk County COVID-19 Memorial is currently located outside the legislature’s William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. Ribbons with the names of Suffolk County residents who have died of COVID-19 will be tied to the memorial. Those who have lost a loved one to COVID-19 are encouraged to visit w w w. s c n y l e g i s l a t u r e . us/CovidMemorial for information on how to include their loved one’s name and tie a ribbon in that person’s honor. County officials and families marked the start of the project by tying the first few ribbons onto the memorial in honor of four county employees who lost
their lives to COVID-19: Investigator Sergeant Keith Allison from the Sheriff’s Department, Suffolk County Auxiliary Police Captain Anthony DeNoyior, Parks Supervisor II Russell E. Shive and Suffolk County Police Lieutenant Robert Van Zeyl. Those who have lost a loved one to COVID-19 may add their loved one to the Suffolk County COVID-19 Memorial by filling out the form at w w w. s c n y l e g i s l a t u r e . us/CovidMemorial. The website offers an option to share a photo and a story about the person. After the county receives a submission, staff members will write the loved one’s name on a ribbon and tie it to the memorial. If family members prefer to write their loved one’s name on a ribbon and tie it themselves, they can fill out the online form and then visit the memorial in Hauppauge. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar Donates $12,091 to Toys for Tots Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar representatives present a check for $12,091 to David Fox, sergeant, United States Marine Corps Reserve and Nick D’Andrea, chief warrant officer 4, Toys for Tots Coordinator, on Wednesday, February 24. The funds were raised during Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar’s 22nd annual fundraising campaign in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys
for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season. This year, Applebee’s also introduced its own “Tots for Tots” program, offering guests an additional way to donate by adding tater tots to any order for just $3, with each sale going directly to the organization. Since
its inception, Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises have raised $4.9 million through its Toys for Tots fundraising campaign to benefit local communities in Florida, Georgia, Long Island and New Jersey. In just 2020 alone, Toys for Tots distributed 20.2 million toys to 7.4 million children.
