Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something
larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does
happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Herff Jones executives traveled to Smithtown High School East on February 29th to present a $5,000 check to the school’s DECA program. High School East students and DECA members Ryan Micozzi and Jainee Gabrielsen were recently
named the winners of the Herff Jones Marketing Results Challenge. The pair competed against two other national finalists at the Herff Jones’ International Sales Conference in Palm Desert, California, from January 10th-12th. As the overall winning
team, Micozzi and Gabrielsen will travel in April to DECA’s 2016 International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where they will be recognized.
Poetry Out Loud Smithtown High School East seniors Colleen Haggerty and Kessandra Chisholm advanced to the finals round at the Poetry Out Loud regional competition on February 25th at Stony Brook University’s Wang Center. Each of the 18 students from Nassau and Suffolk county schools recited their poem selections in
rounds one and two, and six finalists advanced to the third and final round. Haggerty and Chisholm each performed three poem recitations but ultimately did not advance to the state competition. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with U.S. state arts agencies to

support Poetry Out Loud, a contest that encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about literacy history.

The Smithtown High School West varsity Whisperettes kickline team competed and placed in the 2016 NDA Nationals HS Dance Team Championships from February 26th-28th in Orlando, Florida. Crowned
the 2016 NDA Small Kick National Champions, the team also placed 17th in large varsity pom and seventh in medium varsity team performance. The West Whisperettes received the superior showmanship and
technical excellence awards for their kick routine. Led by captains Melanie Chonis, Lauren D’Agostino, Richelle Fassler and Melissa Ginex, the team was also nominated for the NDA sportsmanship award.
The Smithtown Youth Bureau Safe Routes to School Program and Wood Park Primary School in Commack hosted a poster contest in February. The contest was a follow-up to “Safety City,” when students were taught pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic safety lessons in an interactive reproduction of New York City landmarks such as the Midtown
Tunnel, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty during physical education classes. Participants were asked to create a poster displaying one of the above themes. Judging was based upon the poster’s relationship to safety, originality, creativity, and visual impact. One winner per grade was selected. Winners received four
tickets to a Stony Brook Sea Wolves Basketball game (donated by Stony Brook Athletics), a goody bag (donated by Stony Brook Medicine), a Smithtown Youth Bureau T-shirt, and a certificate! Over 60 posters were submitted to the contest. All participants received a certificate recognizing their artwork.

Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District placed ninth overall in the Science and Technology Olympiad Regional Competition at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills on February 27th. Led by team coaches and science teachers Rachel Delaney, Katerina Siolos,
Lunne Schiraldi and Kristen Dicpinigaitis, two teams competed against other Suffolk County schools in 18 different science and technology related events. Several team members received medals in their events including: Shubh Thaker and Ike Zhang (third place, anatomy); Jessica Finger and Teresa

First-graders at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central District had a special visit from author Alyssa Satin Capucilli, who wrote more than 75 books in the “Biscuit” series.
Capucilli spoke to the students about the entire process of writing a book – including inspiration, research, writing, editing, and illustrating – and how the finished product is made. The first-graders
took the lessons learned back to the classroom to implement in their writing.

Fourth-grade students at Smithtown Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District took part in an English Language Arts Academy on anti-bullying and learning the importance of always treating others with kind words and respect.

Participating in the opportunity to earn one of the 12 Eagle Scout required merit badges, seven Boy Scouts of Troop 343 (Hauppauge) participated in the Environmental Science merit badge class at Cedar Point Nature Center in Mount Sinai on February 27th. nearly impossible to put it Under the direction back. To celebrate Youth Art Month in March and the value of art education in schools, students at Smithtown High School East are taking part in a school improvement project. Art students, along with Smithtown High
School East art teacher Tim Needles, will paint a mural in the front of the school with famous U.K. artist John Burgerman. Burgerman will be coming to the school to collaborate with the students on the mural
in late March. Needles was awarded a check for $500 from Smithtown Children’s Foundation, which will fund half of the project’s costs; studentartists did their own fundraising to cover the remaining portion.

MOCK SESSION - Legislator Leslie Kennedy was proud to host Cub Scouts of Smithtown in a mock lawmaking session at the Suffolk County Legislature. The Art League of Long Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a professional gallery setting. The exhibit is on view in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through March 13th. An artists’ reception and awards presentation take place Sunday, March 13th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Charlee Miller, Executive Director of the Art League of Long Island, selected the 20 students to receive awards for their outstanding work. Ms. Miller explains of the selection process: “The Go Ape show is always very exciting. The talent and promise of so many of the young artists made it very difficult to select one piece of artwork over another. Scholarships Available A new round of scholarships to encourage high school students to pursue high tech careers in New York State is available. The New York State Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top ten percent of students in New York high schools if they major in a STEM field and work in a STEM job in New York State for five years after graduation. To qualify for a STEM
award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation. HSEC SUNY STEM Scholarship Award Eligibility An applicant must: • be a legal resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months; • be a U.S. citizen or
eligible non-citizen; • be a high school senior/ recent high school graduate who will be enrolled full time at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University, beginning in the fall term following his or her high school graduation; • be ranked in the top 10 percent of his/her high school graduating class
of a NYS high school; • be matriculated in an undergraduate program leading to a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics at a SUNY or CUNY college; • earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher each term after the first semester; • execute a service contract agreeing to reside and work in NYS for five years in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering or
Mathematics; • not be in default on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any state award; and • be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a state award. Students matriculated in these programs of study may be eligible for a STEM Incentive Program award. The program of study must result in an approved occupation.

Big, Colorful Ideas For Small Spaces (NAPSI)—The C(NAPSI)—Making a small room appear larger can be as simple as using color creatively. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
