At Cleary School for the Deaf, Troop 349 of Smithtown held an Eagle Court of Honor in recognition of Alexander Spear’s attainment of the rank of Eagle. Eagle Scout is the highest rank any Boy Scout can achieve, and it is not accomplished with ease. The Scout must complete a number of merit badges, as well as design and complete a community service project.

Alexander Spear is active in his local Lutheran Church, so when planning his Eagle Scout project he wanted to do something to help his community of faith. Alex noticed that the boiler room in his church was being used as a disorganized storage room, so for his project he renovated the boiler room. First, he cleaned up the room and then he built a dividing wall to set aside part of the boiler room for

storage. In order to raise money for the project Alexander hosted a movie night at his church and he raised more money than he thought he would. “I am so proud of Alexander’s accomplishments; it is a wonderful thing to see a young person give back to their community, and especially their community of faith” said Legislator Leslie Kennedy.

I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

book swap, wild hair and hat day, Mad Libs Monday and tech-less Tuesday. Authors visited the school throughout the PARP celebration. On February 8th, author Kathleen Bart presented her program to grades K-2.

Author Brian Heinz spoke to grades 3-5 on February 15th. The culmination of PARP was Comfy Cozy Day on February 17th when students dressed in their pajamas.

National Merit Scholar Finalists St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that two seniors, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack and Dominick Rich of Bay Shore, have been selected as National Merit Scholar finalists. Both Sachin and Dominick were named National Merit SemiFinalists last spring. The selection was based on their performance on the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) test. They advanced to the round of finalists after meeting other rigorous academic criteria and performing at a high level on the SAT test. Approximately 1.6 million students entered the

competition by taking the PSAT exam. Only 16,000 were selected as National Merit Scholar Finalists. In addition to their academic excellence, both Sachin and Dominick are involved with many extracurricular activities both in and out of school. Sachin is the president of SJB’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He is also involved in the Radio Club, Mathletes, Peace and Justice Club, SJB’s Genesis Science Research program, and St. John’s Middle States Committee. He is also a second degree black belt in jiu-jitsu. Dominick is the vice president of SJB’s chapter of the National Honor

Society, competes in both Varsity Basketball and Spring Track, and is involved with St. John’s Catholic Charities and Big Brother, Big Sister Programs. Sachin is considering MIT, Stanford, Cornell and Binghamton University as his college choice. He has not decided what his course of study will be, however, his top two interests are computer science and engineering. Dominick applied for early admission and was accepted to Johns Hopkins University. He will attend JHU this fall and plans to study Molecular Biology.

Students at West Middle Island (WMI) Elementary School are proudly displaying a unique and colorful mural made from recycled bottle caps. After collecting more than 200 pounds of caps from students, staff and faculty, 300 students in grades two through four painted and organized each cap to form a beautiful mural promoting community unity and

drawing attention to the collective efforts required to recycle our resources. The mural is located in the school’s intermediate multi-purpose room. WMI Literary Coach Carol Serrano said her idea for the bottle cap mural came from seeing the same type of mural in a museum in Philadelphia. “The idea for the design of the globe and hands came from the students

as we discussed what we wanted our mural to represent and promote,” said Mrs. Serrano. The project also teaches the students about the importance of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. “Bottle caps are typically thrown in the trash,” said Mrs. Serrano. “Now they form this incredible kindness and tolerancethemed mural.”

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta congratulated Keith E. Pecora at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony. Keith, a resident of East Northport, and a member of the Northport High School Track and Field Team, earned the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout through his journey as a scout beginning in 2010, followed by receiving special awards and holding various leadership

positions and culminating with becoming an Eagle in 2016. For his community service project, Keith designed, fabricated and installed a “Results Kiosk” at Sunken Meadow State Park, which will post the race results of the Section XI NYS High School Cross Country Track & Field race teams. Prior to having the Kiosk, the race times were posted on the side of a van, “You have achieved a distinction that can never

be taken away from you and it will serve you well when you apply for college, as well as for a job. By earning this award, people will realize that every task you undertake that you will go above and beyond to complete it. Your achievement should be an inspiration to the younger scouts as a sign that they can do it, too, and that they should aspire to be the best that can be,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Prestigious Grant Awarded Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to preserve documents that are a vital part of Long Island’s history. The Palmer School is a recognized leader in library science and one of just 62 schools accredited by the American

Library Association. It also offers the only Ph.D. program in Information Studies in the New York metropolitan area and is the only library sciences school in that area to be admitted into membership in the prestigious iSchools Consortium. “Long Island University is proud to partner our nationally recognized Palmer School with the

resources of the Robert David Lion Gardner Foundation to help preserve Long Island’s history,” said LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline. With the Gardiner Foundation’s grant, LIU will digitize and preserve a collection of historical documents currently held by historical societies across Long Island, with a particular emphasis on

Suffolk County. LIU will showcase these documents at an annual Gardiner Symposium, while promoting year-round visibility of these historical societies. The project will be led by Dr. Gregory Hunter, Professor of Library and Information Science who heads the doctoral program at the Palmer School. Dr. Hunter is a

nationally recognized expert who was a key member of the team that designed and implemented the Electronic Records Archives for the National Archives and Records Administration. Dr. Hunter is Editor of The American Archivist, the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of American Archivists. “The Palmer School has

been educating archivists and supporting the local historical community for three decades,” said Dr. Hunter. “The generous grant from the Gardiner Foundation will help preserve Long Island’s history and also ensure that the next generation of archival professionals has the skills to preserve

Fresh Air Fund Conference

The Long Island volunteer committee attended The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference from Friday, February 3rd through Sunday, February 5th at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Over the course of three days, volunteers participated in interactive workshops with The Fresh Air Fund’s staff and community agency partners. Volunteers attended professional development workshops throughout the conference, with topics ranging from children’s safety, to empathy and diversity, to community engagement.

Former Fresh Air child, Inspector Ernest Morales, Commanding Officer of the 42nd Precinct in The Bronx, delivered the keynote speech. Inspector Morales shared with the close to 300 volunteers in attendance how The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program greatly impacted his life. The closing ceremony included inspiring remarks by Fresh Air siblings and concluded with a spectacular performance by the Bronx Theatre High School Step Team. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from

low-income communities since 1877. First time Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 12 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. The special occasion, a century in the making, was the celebration of Mr. Seidman’s 100th birthday. A Northwell

Health volunteer since 1995, Mr. Seidman spends at least 15 hours a week assisting patients and their families in the surgical waiting room at NSUH. He also provides comfort to patients at Northwell’s Monter Cancer Center and serves on North Shore’s auxiliary board (as chairman for the Tribute Fund and the Car Rafﬂe).

Special invited guests were his son, Dr. Steven Seidman, daughter, Jane Krakauer, and granddaughter, Kim. Kicking off the festivities was NSUH Executive Director Alessandro Bellucci, MD, who presented the guest of honor with a gift certificate and read a proclamation from local government. “I’m pleased to announce that Arthur holds the record for time served as a volunteer,” said Dr. Bellucci. “For that reason, and for everything he’s done for this hospital, we are once again naming Arthur Seidman Volunteer of the Month. He is now the only person in our history to receive that designation twice.” The dashing Mr. Seidman is a World War II veteran who was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple
