The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! This year marks a full decade since School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) began presenting FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. to students across the region. What began as a small (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) STEM-focused initiative for students age six to 10 has now grown into a powerhouse program aimed at igniting the creativity of children on nearly 100 teams. Each year, FIRST reveals a new and exciting challenge, dubbed this year as AQUA ADVENTURESM, for which students will have to do research and present their findings at one of three FIRST LEGO League Expos. During this year’s Expos, which are slated to take place Saturday, March 3rd at Mineola High School and Sunday, March 4th, at Longwood High School, students are asked to navigate the uncharted waters of the Earth’s most important resource. Specifically, they were tasked with discovering from where everyday water

A wise sentiment indeed. If only we could manage to harness these apprehensions and redirect them into positive motivation and drive to move forward, we would all be in much better position to succeed. Easier said than done, as with most things; but still, worth the effort in changing our mentality. Perhaps in the spring. ’Til then, stay warm and dry and enjoy these last few weeks of winter. Musings on March intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it flows, and with

Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Westy Self Storage continues its support for the 10th consecutive year of the Prom Boutique sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center. Westy Self Storage in East Northport is pleased to host this drive as a designated collection site for donations of new and gently-used prom gowns, bridesmaid dresses, special occasion dresses, shoes, handbags and costume jewelry. Parent Workshops Smithtown Elementary School held two information workshops for parents of English language learners on February 8th and 12th to help them better understand community resources and the support services that Smithtown Central School District provides them. “We felt the need to get more information to parents so that their children can become actively involved in sports organizations, library

programs, and for the parents, gain a better understanding of our adult education opportunities,” said Smithtown Elementary School Principal Janine Lavery. The workshops were a collaborative effort led by the Smithtown Elementary School faculty, with support from the ENL department, community resources, ParentTeacher Association and translators. Parents learned about the schoolfamily connection and

parent portal. Attendees could sign up for PTA notifications regarding events and volunteer opportunities. The Smithtown Library issued cards to families, and the St. Patrick’s Youth programs spoke about some of their offerings. “I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. Schools Recognized All seven of Smithtown Central School District’s elementary schools have been recognized as Project Lead The Way Distinguished Schools for the 2017-2018 school year. Smithtown’s elementary schools represent seven of the 22 New York State schools identified. “This recognition is certainly representative of all of the hard work that has gone into our successful implementation on the part of the many staff and faculty members involved,”

said Paul Strader, executive director of curriculum at Smithtown Central School District. “It is one of just 97 elementary schools across the U.S. to receive this honor.” The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, schools must offer at least two PLTW Launch modules at each grade level and have

more than 75 percent of the student body participating during the 2016-2017 school year. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers. PLTW empowers students to develop in-demand, transportable knowledge and skills through pathways in computer science, engineering and biomedical science.

Going for the Gold The competition was fierce as Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District held its annual Winter Olympics on February 27th in the

gymnasium at Smithtown High School West. The evening is sponsored by the school’s ParentTeacher Association and facilitated by the physical education teachers. The

teams – divided by colors – participated in different relay-style events while working on their teambuilding skills.

Songs of Learning Kindergarten students at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had a special visit from Joe Guida, aka “The Singing School Bus Driver” on February 27th. As part On February 15th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner met with Rocky Point High School Life Skills students at Brookhaven Town Hall. During their visit, the students had the opportunity to speak with

First Lego League Championship Following a series of six qualifiers, 40 FIRST® LEGO® League teams from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties are set to compete at the SBPLI Long Island Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. During the event, presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), students (ages nine to 14) and their mentors from the program will present their LEGO robots that best address the “Challenge” set forth in this year’s theme – FIRST HYDRO

DYNAMICSSM. Throughout the season, these teams were among the more than 190 that worked hard to research, design, build, program and test LEGO robots that address a problem within the human water cycle. Students were first tasked with identifying the problem - it could be something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem

was identified, the students then evaluated current solutions that add value to society, developed an innovative solution, and subsequently presented their project to the Judges. In addition, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, they designed and built a robot to solve missions on the competition tables. FIRST LEGO League introduces young people to the excitement of learning with its partner The LEGO Group. Students are encouraged to explore and pursue science, technology, engineering, and math

(STEM) fields both within the FIRST program and in their future education and careers. Students presented their solutions during one of six different Qualifier tournaments that were held at Great Hollow Middle School and Mineola High School in late January and early February. Teams that competed at the Qualifiers worked to earn an opportunity to advance to the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. The full list of 40

teams that earned the chance to compete in the Championship tournament are noted below. These teams will work to earn the chance to advance to the FIRST World Festival in Detroit on April 28th. “We had a great FIRST LEGO League season on Long Island and we are looking forward to our final event at Longwood,” says Stephanie Stern, CoProgram Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “Every year, we are amazed at the skills that our students acquire from this program

– be it teamwork and sportsmanship or science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Spring Into Safety The days are getting longer and the temperature is warming. This means that Daylight Savings Time will soon begin, and New Yorkers will set their clocks forward one hour on March 11th. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to take this opportunity check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure their homes are properly protected. If alarms have removeable batteries, those batteries should be replaced. Alarms equipped with sealed-in batteries should be tested to ensure they are in proper working

condition. Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. At the end of 2015, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removable batteries that last for at least 10 years. The new law will take effect in 2019 and marks an important step in improving New York’s fire safety. According to research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working

smoke alarms, and the vast majority of smoke alarm failures are due to dead or missing batteries. Ten-year smoke alarms require little maintenance, and unlike alarms with removable batteries, they are nearly impossible to deactivate. Regardless of the type of alarm in one’s home, FASNY urges everybody to take some time and ensure their alarms are in proper working order. “Smoke alarms are the single most importance appliance found in every home,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “FASNY urges all New Yorkers to conduct routine,

simple maintenance to ensure these lifesaving devices are in proper order. We strongly encourage New Yorkers to install 10-year smoke alarms, which cannot be easily deactivated. Equally important is installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms, which are also critical in protecting life.” FASNY smoke & CO alarm tips: • Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button. • If you have an alarm with a removable battery, be sure to check the batteries
