And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world. Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps. So begin. And maintain. And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.

Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case
may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or
you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult
immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

Commack High School science research students are working hard to make a difference in this world. The power of their young minds to seek solutions that will help others and perhaps change the future for all us is within their reach. One specific group of young engineers, Dan Cho, Brianna Delgado, Abi Anand, Melike Akoglu, and Annop Singh designed and built a device created specifically for a man with limited mobility, Glen Campbell, who has quadriplegia. Glen, an attorney, needed better access to computers and documents via a voice activated control system so he could work more independently. The students used motors, sprockets, chain, spur gears, an arduino microcontroller, and
customized commands (programmed) to create a customized desktop that is controlled voice activation. Glen can move the computer, book stand, and telephone stand easily now, increasing his independence and calls the “Office Top Project” a “great device and a great tool” that has enhanced his limited mobility in a very positive way. Science research students have been helping create devices for those with limited mobility for the past seven years, under the tutelage of volunteer Gary Shaw, science research teacher Richard Kurtz, and Anthony Pensiero, a Commack graduate now attending Columbia University, along with other science and technology teachers. They have helped children, office workers, and veterans by
Great Results building custom-designed assistive devices to help with the specific needs of many individuals with disabilities over the years. This project won an Honorable Mention in the SourceAmerica Design Challenge, a national engineering competition to design workplace technology for people with disabilities. High school and college students partner with an organization which employs people with disabilities or individual with a disability to invent a process, device, system or software for a more productive work environment. This service learning opportunity develops engineering, communication, writing, math, presentation, and social skills while helping the community and competing for cash prizes.
Just before the midwinter recess, Great Hollow Middle School conducted a blood drive, coordinated by the school’s PTA, to benefit the New
York Blood Center. With student and parent volunteers spreading the word through posters, pamphlets, social media and word of mouth, the

event resulted in the collection of 61 pints to help replenish valuable blood supply.

Pines Elementary School’s Future Corp Club is a community service club provides 4th and 5th grade students with opportunities to work together to make a difference in their community. One of Future Corp’s main activities of the club is the students’ biweekly trips to the Arbors Assisted Living Facility in Hauppauge. The students spend time talking, playing games, doing crafts and puzzles and enjoying singa-longs with the residents. This year, the students had an opportunity to interview several of the Arbors’ residents who are veterans from all branches of the military – many of whom served in World War II. “Every year, Pines students learn about those who serve our country by
reading books or watching a video in school,” stated Future Corp Club CoAdviser Tracey DeRose. “This year was different. The students had an opportunity to interview each veteran at the Arbors Assisted Living Facility. They asked insightful questions and listened to each veteran’s remarkable story.” The student interviews will provide the content for an up-coming book of stories on these American heroes. One legendary veteran that the students interviewed was Lorenzo DeFau, who served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Mason. DeFau was part of the only crew of AfricanAmerican sailors to take a warship into combat during World War II. The Mason’s war record
included its safe escort of convoys across the Atlantic and its exemplary service in the hunterkiller groups that finally destroyed the German U-Boats that had infested Allied waters. Legendary actor Ossie Davis starred in the 2004 movie Proud that chronicled the real-life story of the USS Mason and its predominately AfricanAmerican crew. “From the moment I met Lorenzo, I knew I was talking to a part of American history,” described Future Corp Club Co-Adviser Marie Barry. According to 4th grade student Nicholas LaSpina, “Interviewing these brave veterans was cool. It was wonderful to learn about how they all fought for our country.”

Headed To Championships More than 100 students from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West DECA either placed or received honorable mention at the recent Suffolk County Regional DECA Competition held at Suffolk County Community College in Selden. As a result, these students qualified to advance to the New York State DECA championship competition to be held this March in Rochester, New York. DECA is an international business/ marketing club opened to high school students enrolled in business courses. Awards were presented to students for categories including accounting, apparel and accessories
marketing, automotive services marketing, business management and administration, business law and ethics, business services marketing, financial services, food marketing, hospitality, hotel and lodging management, human resources, marketing communications, marketing management, personal finance, public speaking, quick serve restaurant management, and sports and entertainment marketing. Some worked in teams, while others worked individually. Smithtown students are also very active in Regional DECA; Ryan Micozzi, Jacki Keegan, Victoria Tiranno, Danielle Laurenti and Justina Tenaglia are all Regional Officers who
work with the other DECA chapters in Suffolk County. In addition to the Smithtown students who placed at regionals, other DECA members from both HSE and HSW will make the trip to Rochester to compete in the manual competition. Students create manuals that range from 10 to 30 pages, covering various business and marketing topics. Manuals were submitted to the state in late January and now the students are preparing for their 15-minute oral presentations they will give in Rochester. Students who place in the performance and written events in Rochester will qualify to compete at the International DECA Competition in Orlando, Florida in April.

When the US entered WWII, he enlisted in the Navy and was commissioned in the Intelligence Division as a Japanese translator and interpreter. After the war, he attended the Harvard Business School, receiving his MBA. For the next 45 years Brown worked in the furniture business and worked to create four very successful Ethan Allen stores on Long Island. He retired in 1992 to study art at the Art League of Long Island.

There were 18 Boy Scouts from Hauppauge’s Boy Scout Troop 343 who took part in an educational program run by the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City on Tuesday, February 17th. The scouts left having completed the Energy Merit Badge, and a second trip to the museum (to complete the Robotics Merit Badge) is planned for March. The Energy Merit Badge had the scouts learning about the principles of energy in different forms via classroom instruction and discussions of types and forms of energy followed by hands-on explanations with the use of propellers and voltmeters. The scouts participated in a scavenger hunt (in (in the “Golden Age of Flight” section of the museum), where they had to identify which planes used two, three, or four
blades in the propellers. They took advantage of an opportunity to see “how fast will the ball climb up the rope” at the Wall of Fans and “where does the wind hit the fan to make it go” to see how the propellers create and use energy to make airplanes fly as well as the best use of air and wind for turbines to create electricity. Boy Scout Nicholas Sicurelli explained that the scouts spent time experimenting how energy is used in different ways, such as using a small solar panel to power a toy car. The scouts also had personal tours of the museum by docents and had the opportunity to see Long Island’s role in the history of flying and space. In addition, over 40 family members attended the museum and shared in the day with the boys.
Boy Scout Ryan Martines said “The most interesting thing was all the planes and simulators that we saw and learned about” during the Scavenger Hunt. The attendees, from Boy Scout Troop 343, Hauppauge, participated in the 2 ½ hours programs and a trip is planned to again attend in March, this time to earn the Robotics Merit Badge program. Assemblyman Andrew Raia recently joined the Art League of Long Island at a celebration of Dan Brown, a local artist who has dedicated his life to the arts. The one-man exhibit seeks to capture the very essence of his 91 years of experience on Earth. A classically trained artist, Brown uses pastels, water color and oil paintings to tell a variety of emotional stories and real life incidents that many can only dream of.
