Eight High Schools Advance Teen entrepreneurs from 72 local high schools competed in the seventh annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition. Ten of those teams will advance to the semi-finals next month. Student business leaders from across Long Island won the top spots during an event held at Farmingdale State College and move on to compete at semi-finals hosted by American Portfolios in Holbrook, next month. Each high school class was represented by a student team in the form of a business. · VE Connected, East Islip High School “Congratulations to everyone who participated,” said Ellen Palazzo, LI VE Regional Director and LI Field Associate for the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. “This program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain real-world experience and practice their business skills.” The LI VE is funded through the Perkins Consortium. The collaborative effort includes Nassau BOCES, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Technical Assistance Center of New York. “Over the last six years we’ve grown from six teams to over 70 on Long Island,” continued Palazzo. “It’s a vibrant, problem-solving learning experience that students really take to and enjoy while learning real-world skills.” The Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) National Business Plan Competition is one of the most prestigious annual competitions for public high school business students. Student entrepreneurs from across the country must demonstrate their global business expertise through written

business plans and oral presentations. According to VEI, “The competition showcases best practices, rewards excellence, and trains high school students to apply sophisticated knowledge and skills attributed to business professionals and college students.” “The Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition is made possible as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Career and Technical Education and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County, by giving them real-world workplace skills while still in high school.”

Prominent labor leader, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO will be honored by The Suffolk Community College Foundation at its annual Salute to Excellence Gala, whose proceeds will be used to fund need and merit-based scholarships, emergency student loans and quality academic enrichment programs. I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Senior Rebecca Proscia was named a National Merit Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC). Approximately 15,000 high school seniors in the United States are identified as National Merit Finalists. Each year, about 1.5 million juniors take the PSAT, and just 50,000 of those students with the highest Selection Index scores (or total PSAT scores) qualify for NMSP recognition – meaning roughly the top three percent of 11th grade testers qualify for merit recognition. According to the NMSC, approximately 15,000 Finalists are selected each year out of a pool of more than 1.5 million high school seniors from across the country due to their exemplary performance

on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Beginning in April through July, NMSC will notify approximately 8,000 of the remaining 15,000 competition Finalists that they have been chosen as winners of the competition and thus will gain access to three types of National Merit Scholarships available to competition winners. Those scholarships include: 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships; approximately 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships; and about 4,500 college-sponsored scholarships. Proscia was named a National Merit Semifinalist in September 2016. Merit Scholar designees were selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard

to gender, race, ethnic origin or religious preference. To reach the Finalist designation, Proscia submitted a scholarship application in which she provided detailed information about her academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and employment as well as honors and awards received. “It is an impressive accomplishment to be recognized as a National Merit Finalist! Rebecca’s selection is a prestigious honor and a testament to all of her hard work and dedication to academic excellence,” said Hauppauge Deputy Superintendent James Stucchio. “Hauppauge is proud of Rebecca on receiving this welldeserved honor.”

Forest Brook hosted an assembly to reveal to the school’s fourth and fifth grade students that they won the First Place Elementary School and First Place Student Reader in the nation in the LightSail 25 Challenge. Bretton Woods Elementary School also was the proud winner of 10th place among all the elementary schools in the nation that participated in the Challenge. The LightSail 25 Challenge was held from January 9th to February 10th. It was open to fourth and fifth grade students in classrooms across the United States – uniting them with the common goal of reading as much as possible during each day of the Challenge. Approximately 126 fourth and fifth grade Forest Brook students participated in the contest, logging in 173,004 minutes of reading – a whopping average of 1,373 minutes (nearly 23 hours) of reading per student to secure the School’s first place win! Bretton Woods Elementary School students logged an impressive 125,335 total minutes of reading during the Challenge period to win 10th place in the nation. Forest Brook Fifth Grade Student Max O. was the top individual reader in the LightSail 25 Challenge with 5,662 total minutes of reading. Reading Celebration

Fourth-grade students at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in a Sweet Reading Celebration on Valentine’s Day. Dressed in their pajamas, students brought sleeping bags, stuffed animals and their favorite books to school.

St. James Elementary School Principal Mary Grace Lynch kicked off the festivities as the guest mystery reader. Throughout the day, the students spent time reading and sharing their favorite books with their classmates over hot cocoa and homemade cookies and cupcakes. At the

end of the celebration, the fourth-graders used their Chromebooks to create a heart using the programming language of LOGO. The festivities ended by sharing Valentine’s Day cards and reflecting on each student’s favorite part of the celebration.

NEW HEIGHTS - Smithtown High School East student-athlete Daniel Claxton has been named the leading high school high jumper in the United States this year. On January 28th, Claxton beat his own record by jumping 7 feet at the Ocean Breeze Invitational, setting a new meet record, school record and Suffolk County record. Claxton has been named league champion, large school champion and was the top finisher at the state qualifier meet. He will be competing in the state championships on March 4th. Social-emotional learning is a top priority for Smithtown Central School District. To that end, the students at Dogwood Elementary School engage in different practices throughout the school day to help keep them connected and focused. Some classroom teachers

The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has installed its officers for 2017-2018. The “Change of Watch” Meeting was on Friday, February 17th at the RusyBohm Post 411 American Legion, Islip, New York. Arthur K. Wallach, AP, of Commack, NY has been installed as Squadron Commander. Installed to serve with Commander Wallach is John Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, who is Executive Officer; James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace as Squadron Educational Officer; James F. Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer. Commander Wallach is a Squadron Advanced Pilot of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Executive Officer over this last year. His previous Squadron responsibilities include being the Administrative Office in 2015. Arthur has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: achieved the grade of Pilot and Seamanship in 2011, and the Basic Boating Course in 1998. He has also earned Educational Proficiency in 2002, the Pilot Award in 2003, and became a Senior Member of the United States Power Squadron in 2005. He successfully completed

Engine Maintenance and Marine Electrical Systems in 2001 and Weather and Instructor Development in 2016. Arthur Wallach has earned eight Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. Over 125 Squadron members attended the “Change of Watch” Meeting, along with several elected and governmental officials. Several proclamations were received and presented to Outgoing Commander Suzanne Mora, Oakdale, New York. Proclamations were presented by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Vincent Belfiroe for New York Senator Tom Croci, Great South Bay Power Squadron Member Alexandra VanDerlofske – who is the Director of Community Outreach for the Suffolk County Executive’s Office, who presented a proclamation for Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Ed Wiggins for New York State Senator Phil Boyle, and Sgt. Tim McCaffrey from the Nassau County Marine Bureau. Other letters and proclamations presented to Outgoing Commander Mora were from United States Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New

York State Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino, Suffolk County Proceeding Officer Dwayne Gregory, the Town of Islip and Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, Deborah Henley, and from President Jimmy Carter from The Carter Center. Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is the world’s large private boating organization. The national organization is comprised of over 40,000 members in over 450 local Squadrons across the country. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational boating, boating safety, and education. As a public service, the Power Squadron offers Safe Boating Courses. Through this course, over three million students have already learned how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. Author Visit As part of its Parents As Reading Partners initiative, Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District hosted an author visit and workshops with Tracey Delio throughout February. Delio is the author of the

book series “The Secret Adventures of Louie V.” Delio spoke to students about how even everyday happenings can be turned into an adventure by just using your imagination and creativity. With the younger students, Delio hosted workshops on

sharing ideas and working those ideas into a story. In the workshop sessions with older students, Delio worked on the writing and editing process and students even wrote a blog post based on a photo. Delio chose a winning post to be featured on her blog.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.
