Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery. Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

District Superintendent of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) David Wicks was February’s guest speaker at the monthly Community Legislative Committee meeting. Wicks presented Advocacy 101 to a room of 50 attendees who included students, parents, ESBOCES staff, and members of the community interested in answers to questions such as ‘What is advocacy?’ ‘Who can advocate?’, and ‘How do we advocate?’

Wicks’ presentation was timely as many of the students and staff in attendance are preparing to visit Albany for Advocacy Day on February 28th, and they want their voices heard. Building relationships, knowledge is power, know the logistics, and communicate effectively were four components of advocating identified and discussed. Students from both the Academy LI and ESBOCES chosen to participate in Advocacy

Day received additional training to help them understand the issues and the importance of speaking to elected officials to address concerns and solutions. Wicks said, “You are the current and future voters of America. Be the expert in the room when you get to Albany. Be courteous; be confident because this is the opportunity for you to exercise your right to give input about the issues that affect you.”

Coastal Navigation Course

Student Support The Long Island Museum announced recently that Sterling National Bank, with headquarters in Lake Success, is the sponsor of the museum’s annual student art exhibition, Colors of Long Island. This annual exhibition affords a chance for hundreds of students from across Long Island to display their artwork in a museum setting. “We’re proud to be a sponsor of this inspiring event, which brings together some of the work of the most talented student artists from across Suffolk and Nassau Counties,” said Brian Edwards, Consumer Banking President, Sterling National Bank. “We are passionate about

educating and sparking the imagination of the next generation, and are committed to helping children from across Long Island use the power of art to positively impact their community.” The museum will recognize Sterling’s support, along with all the participating students and teachers at artists’ reception on March 4th and April 8th from noon to 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend either or both events. Great South Bay Power Squadron of America’s Boating Club is pleased to announce a Coastal Navigation Course for the spring of 2018.The course is scheduled to begin on March 15th, at the West Islip Public Library located at 3 Higbie Lane, West Islip. The course will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday evenings. The course will run around 12 weeks. The course, “Coastal Navigation – Piloting,” covers the basics of Coastal and Inland Navigation. The course focuses on GPS navigation as a primary navigational tool while covering traditional navigational techniques using a chart and charting tools. Upon completion, students should expect to be comfortable charting and navigating courses to new destinations as well as using paper charts should their electronics fail. The course includes many in-class exercises, developing the student’s skills through hands-on practice and learning. Food can be used to fend off the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications — which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms — can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

Safe ways to deal with sinus pressure S

inuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the lowcenter of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. CedarsSinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difﬁcult. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to ﬂushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a ﬁxture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drugfree alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

Tap water is not adequately ﬁltered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

epetitive behaviors, depression, anxiety, compulsions and even phobias are just a few of the mental health issues millions of people across the globe deal with every day. Symptoms of these conditions may range from mild to debilitating.

The World Health Organization says that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lives. Roughly 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, which puts mental disorders among the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide.

The Mayo Clinic says CBT talk therapy is performed in a structured setting, with a limited number of sessions. CBT identiﬁes negative thinking so that challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and perceptions changed. While it is a tool in treating mental health disorders, anyone can beneﬁt from CBT, especially those looking to cope with stress or other hurdles.

Mental health is not something people may feel comfortable discussing. Problems may go untreated for years, and some individuals may use selfmedicating behaviors such as drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs to alleviate their symptoms. Others continue to persist with illnesses when they do not have to. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the more successful methods to address mental health issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difﬁculties.

The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists deﬁnes CBT as a general term for a classiﬁcation of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started. CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

uscle soreness can affect people from all walks of life. While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent ﬁtness fanatic. Those who ﬁnd themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym:

CBT is a balance between placing personal meaning on things and situations as well as the relationship between problems. Many therapists personalize CBT to meet the needs and personality of their patients.

Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly beneﬁt long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aﬁcionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout.

Individuals who prefer a nonpharmaceutical approach to treating their mental health condition may ﬁnd CBT can be helpful. Stress or uncomfortable feelings may arise, but therapists can work to avoid uncomfortable situations. Finding a therapist with whom they feel comfortable can help people make the most of CBT.

Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night..

Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difﬁcult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

The agency currently provides supportive housing for more than 400 Long Islanders recovering from mental illness. “They really helped me to see what’s blocking my progress,” said Options resident Matt about his experience working with Kristen Czelusniak (Farmingdale), Lauren Flicker (Smithtown) and Susanne Haaser (Selden) – first year students in SBU’s Occupational Therapy Program. “We are happy to help each person work on their individual goals

and work toward greater independence,” stated Haaser. As an occupational therapist, “you can build a relationship with your client/patient. You get to see their gradual progression. It’s more personal than seeing a doctor once or twice a year.” This is the second year of the Options for Community Living and Stony Brook University collaboration. As part of their field placement, the Occupational Therapy (OT) students work with groups of residents and engage group members in meaningful activities to improve their skills. “We interview, evaluate and assess the physical barriers to individual success,” described Czelusniak. “We then establish an Occupational Therapy Profile for each person that details what we call their roles, goals and barriers. It takes into account their occupational experience and history,

their interests, routines and environment.” At Options, the OT students focused on skill development helpful to all of the group participants. “Last week, we worked on coping skills. Playing a card game is one way to take your mind away from unhealthy thoughts. The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, has installed its officers for 2018-2019. The “Change of Watch” Meeting was on Friday, February 16th at the RusyBohm Post 411 American Legion, Islip. John P. Pergola, AP, Patchogue, has been installed as Squadron Commander. Installed to serve with Commander Pergola is James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace, who is the Executive Officer; Kathy E. Matheson, P, of West Islip, is Administrative Officer; Marie A. Wallach, S, of Commack, as Educational Officer; James F. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace, as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook, as Treasurer. Commander Pergola is a Squadron Advanced Pilot of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Executive Officer over this last year. His previous Squadron responsibilities include being the Administrative Office in 2016 and was the Co-op Charting Chairman from 2014 to 2016. John has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: grade of Advanced Piloting, Pilot and Seamanship in 2011, and the Basic Boating Course in 2003. He has also earned Educational Proficiency in 2013 and successfully completed the following educational courses: Engine Maintenance in 2011, Weather in 2012 and Operations Training in 2014 and 2017. He

was presented with the Skipper Award in 2013 and the Pilot Award in 2015. He also successfully completed Marine Electrical Systems in 2013, Marine Communications in 2014, Navigation Systems and Electronic Navigation in 2015, Marine Radar in 2016, and Leadership Development, Emergencies Onboard, and Man Overboard in 2017. Commander Pergola has earned six Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. He became a Senior Member of the Squadron in 2017 and has served on the Squadron’s Executive Board for the past three years. Over 125 Squadron members attended the “Change of Watch” Meeting, along with several elected and governmental officials. Several proclamations were received and presented to Outgoing Commander Arthur Wallach, AP, Commack. Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!
