the Summer Skirmish Fortnite Tournaments, Tim decided to take some time off of college and his job at The Hamlet Golf Course in Commack (where he worked since high school) and started playing Fortnite full-time. What drew Tim to Angela’s House was the Millers’ dear family friend, Jerry DeSena. Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

Community Charity Showdown and win money for Angela’s House. I know that this donation will directly help the children at Angela’s House. Being from Long Island, I wanted to play for a local charity and the work that is done to help medically fragile children at Angela’s House is amazing.” The tournament involved incorporating teams with pros select players (a four-man squad) from the Fortnite community based on a qualification process from the week prior. With charity being the main focus of the event, every team was rewarded with a payout to their selected charity. Coming in third place, out of 20 teams participating, Tim received $60,000 and gifted the proceeds to assist medically fragile children in the Long Island community. The contribution from Tim “Bizzle” Miller will help benefit the Angela’s House Everyday Wishes Program which assists extraordinary children and families who have ordinary (everyday), but critical needs. Through grants, fundraising events, corporate sponsorships and other donations, like from the Charity Showdown, the local Long Island non-profit is able to increase their capacity to provide their families with medical supplies, therapeutic equipment, assistive technology, home modifications, respite, counseling, advocacy, service coordination, crisis assistance, alternative medicine, special camps and other resources for their medically fragile children that cannot be funded by other means. Angela’s House received a $60,000 donation as a result of Fortnite gamer, Tim “Bizzle” Miller’s successful participation in the Charity Showdown run by Twitch Rivals late last year. Tim is a 21 year old young man who is a 2016 graduate of Commack High School. He attended Penn State University where he was studying Accounting. After a year at Penn State, he realized that accounting was not for him and returned home and enrolled in Suffolk Community College’s Cyber Security Program. Prior to Fortnite, Tim began his competitive playing with a game called Counter Strike. He started playing Fortnite in 2018 and signed as a professional player with Ghost Gaming in June 2018. Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can! Registration is now open and runs through February 27th. Kindness Shines At St. James Elementary

St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District radiated with messages of positivity during the schoolwide Kindness Week from Feb. 10-14. Each day, students dressed up to show their commitment to kindness with a pajama day, crazy hair day and sports

attire day. The students made kindness trees that featured different ways they could be kind toward their classmates, families, community members or themselves. The trees was constructed out of every students’ handprints in different colors to represent each grade level. To show kindness to

their community, the school collected items for the local animal shelter and the nursing home and rehabilitation center in Saint James. During the Kindness Night celebration, students created Valentine’s Day cards for the residents of the rehabilitation center.

The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith. Lent is a 40-day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Lent is designed to help Christians prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices. Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors. In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and

drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people. Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent. Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to selfdenial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead.

While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christlike during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church. Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.

Due to dangers and lack of food, the two deer need to flee their forest in search of a better place to live. Kiley hopes the book will prompt readers to explore the stories of

people throughout the world who had to leave their homes and face the same challenges his characters face as refugees. Kiley spoke to the students about the writing, editing and illustration processes. He then did a read aloud of the book, followed by a questionand-answer session. ACCOMPSETT ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES CULTURE - The third graders at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District got a taste of different cultures around the world and celebrated ethnic diversity thanks to a visit from author Kathleen Bart on Feb. 4. Based on her book “Global Gourmet,” the program explored multicultural celebrations, holidays, foods, customs and traditions. Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time.

One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous. However, despite the many

proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.
