Luncheon A Great Success! More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 12th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone

in attendance to “Speak Red” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of the day with women they know. The 2014 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and the North Shore LIJ Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor. The color red was everywhere from women’s dresses to men’s ties. This year’s 13th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon honorees were Carmelina Oliveira, President, Oliveira Contracting, Inc. and Karen Murray, President, VF Sportswear. Stella Mendes, President, First National Bank of New York was chair of the luncheon and Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital and Dr. Stacey Rosen, V.P. Katz Institute

For Women’s Health were the Medical Co-Chairs. The honorees were committed to raising support and creating awareness about heart disease and stroke especially as it pertains to women. Lauren Scala, Reporter for WNBC 4 New York was emcee. Attendees also heard Aime Salazar and Joe Nigro, heart survivors, share their experiences. The networking portion of this year’s luncheon was the most successful to date. Winter Word Scramble

The Suffolk County Community College Michael J. Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team took home seven trophies at the 2014 New England Forensics Championship at Boston’s Suffolk University last week and four team members qualified for the national tournament later this year. Suffolk topped Emerson College and Bridgewater College for the third place overall team title. Debate Team VicePresident Nick Alleyne took first in Informative Speech and third in the Impromptu category, which earned him a spot at the national championships in both categories. Felipe A. Espitia Cetina placed

second in Impromptu and will also be heading to the national event. Cetina is also a Suffolk County Community College Student Trustee. Amanda Koscik, public relations officer, placed first in the Prose category, while teammates President Jacqueline Pusey placed fifth and Treasurer Amanda Yodice, fourth; Secretary Nicholas Krauss - in his first forensics tournament - drew third, and Faseeha Naeem, secured the top spot, and a first place trophy. Krauss and Naeem will compete at the national championship in the Persuasive category. Jaqueline Pusey is making a repeat appearance at the national championships,

this time in the Persuasive category after appearing last fall in the Dramatic Interpretation slot. Assistant Professor of Communications and Faculty Advisor Christopher Holfester said, the Michael J. Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team has won three national championships and twice won the New York State Championship since 1999 and former team members are now college professors and attorneys. The team will compete again on February 22nd and 23rd, at the Emerson/Lafayette Swing at Emerson College in Boston.

Tee-Off Brunch This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Executive Women’s Golf Association’s (EWGA) Long Island Chapter. As the largest women-focused amateur golf association in the United States with chapters in nearly every U.S. major market and corporate center, the EWGA has connected more than 100,000 working and professional women who share a passion for cultivating relationships and enjoying the game of golf. The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island will be offering free eye donation educational sessions throughout the month of March in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced recently. March is the 31st Annual National Eye Donor Awareness month. Since 1961, more than one million adults and children have had their sight restored as a result of eye donations, according to the Eye Bank Association of America. The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, which is located at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and serves the New York metropolitan area, has provided the gift of sight to

more than 12,650 people since its inception in 1986. “We hope during these educational programs to explain how eye donations work and debunk some of the myths surrounding this donation,” said Kenneth Manger, director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island. “Organ, tissue and eye donation are among some of the most selfless things that people can do to change the life of another person.” North Shore-LIJ Health System medical professionals and informational displays will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations: · March 5th: LIJ Medical

Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Cablevision is seeking high school students to participate in the Smithsonian Channel’s Make Your Mark contest, an opportunity to win money for a school or community project. In honor of Black History Month, students can submit a video idea, or mark, that will leave a lasting impression on their community or school. The Smithsonian Channel project grows out of the documentary Breath of Freedom, which tells the story of African-American

soldiers who returned from World War II and made their mark by taking up the civil rights struggle in the United States. Athletes from 16 junior and community college men’s and women’s basketball teams will be featured at the 2013-2014 National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Region 15 Championships hosted by Suffolk County Community College in Selden later this month. College teams representing Division I and III men and Division III women will take to the College’s Ammerman Campus Brookhaven Gym’s hardwood from February 28th to March 2nd. Suffolk County Community College last hosted the regional championships in 1995. “This is a tremendous opportunity for local basketball fans and the community to watch talented junior college athletes in action,” said Suffolk County Community College

Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Kevin Foley. “And while they’re here for the games, they can see all that Suffolk has to offer: 22 different competitive teams in 14 sports,” Foley said. Foley added that both Suffolk men’s and women’s basketball teams are competing in the tournament. “Suffolk County Community College is delighted to welcome the NJCAA Region XV Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “Intercollegiate competition is an integral part of our educational experience and we look forward to welcoming the athletes, their coaches and familes to our College. We are also very proud to to webcast the games utilizing the

expertise and talents of our Radio and Television Production Department here at the College,” McKay said. The Little Cow Harbor Run for HOPE is a 4-mile run through the lovely hamlet of Greenlawn. St. Hugh’s Project HOPE has teamed up with Sleepy’s in organizing this event. The 4-Mile Run will begin at Oldfield Middle School at 9 a.m. Walkers are also welcome. Prizes will be awarded to all the top finishers and all registered runners will be eligible for raffle prizes. In addition, a ½ mile Kid’s Fun Run, for kids 10 and under, will take place at 8:30 AM on the grounds of Oldfield Middle School. ST. JOHN’S SPORTS - Patients in St. Johnland Nursing Center’s Head Injury Rehabilitation Unit celebrated the start of the 2014 Olympic Games with their own version of many popular sporting events. Divided into two teams, they competed in adapted indoor sports including cross country skiing, ice hockey, speed skating and snowboarding. The participants, many of whom are recovering from a traumatic brain injury, were excited to be part of the Olympic spirit. Everyone was a medalist at the award ceremony!

On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore. The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Approximately 100 people participated in a daylong contest to determine who could perform the most sit-ups or push-ups in a given period of time. Dear Little Dollies,

a unique doll collectors shop in Bellmore, was the presenting sponsor for the event. Other groups and organizations in attendance included Molloy College, Kellenberg High School, and Nancy Burner & Associates. Volunteer coaches and Steel Fitness Gym trainers observed participants throughout the competition to ensure that the sit-ups and pushups were completed correctly and counted accurately. The competition was dedicated to the late Dorothy C. Camilleri, a

Bellmore resident who battled Alzheimer’s Disease for several years. Her husband, Louis, who is 89 years old, got out of his wheelchair and did one situp in honor of his late wife. All of the participants will continue to raise funds until June 30th in the hopes of reaching the target goal of $25,000. Over the last several weeks, new and used jeans were collected and dropped off at various donation sites throughout the Town, including the Islip Youth Bureau, Legislator Cilmi’s Office, the Keep Islip Clean office, and Islip, Sachem East, Hauppauge, Central Islip, Sayville, Bayport-

Blue Point and West Islip High Schools. In total, more than 1,400 pairs of jeans were collected, and later sorted by a team of staff and volunteers. The Teens for Jeans program was established seven years ago and has been successful in collecting more than 3.5 million pairs of jeans that have benefitted those in need.
