Classroom Postal Lesson

ifth-graders at Branch Brook Elementary School in Smithtown have been writing letters to students in other classrooms and learning how a letter gets to its intended recipient through the Wee Deliver program. Since 1990, the U.S. Postal Service has offered this program to promote reading and writing through letter-writing campaigns in elementary schools. • The Smithtown High School West Science Olympiad Team performed extremely well at the Eastern Long Island Division C Regional Science Olympiad Competition at Brentwood High School, taking home 11 medals. During the Science Olympiad, students participate in events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. Events fall into three

main categories: science concepts and knowledge, science processes and thinking skills, and science application and technology and tasks are either knowledge-based or engineering-based. Students work in teams of two for most categories and much like an athletic team, Olympiad teams require preparation, commitment, coaching and practice throughout the year. More than 6,700 teams from across the country compete in the Science Olympiad each

Buddies By: Jamie Lynn Ryan On February 16th, my “half-birthday,” I decided the time was right to adopt another fish to join the family. As of this writing, “Buddy” – as I dubbed my aqua-colored delta-fin betta fish – is adjusting quite nicely to life in his betta bowl. He swims, he floats, he eats… although not when I’m in the vicinity. I literally found myself crouching down out of sight to see if he was, in fact, eating. Most fish can’t wait for that first flake to drop; Buddy, not so much. Perhaps he’s just self-conscious. But I finally caught him in the act, sucking down a betta pellet and – get

this – chewing it thoroughly. I know, I know… fish don’t have teeth. But his motions mimicked a dog munching on a treat, breaking it down bit by bit until he had fully digested his dinner. That’s my Buddy, pretty and quirky and providing some of the best entertainment this side of the aquarium since my dearly departed finned friends, Harry and Harvey. By all accounts, bettas have a much more substantial lifespan than your average goldfish, so let’s hope Buddy hangs in for a while. Of course, I suppose he could already be pushing 3 years old as we speak, so his longevity remains to be seen. For me, the biggest test will

be the weekly water change / “bath time” process, that unwelcome disturbance of fishbowl tranquility that all marine life seems to detest. Unfortunately for Buddy, he has no shrubbery or decorative toys to hide behind – yet. We’ll see if I can find something appropriate for his little underwater kingdom. For now, he’ll just have to deal with being on full display for all to see. Hopefully, Buddy will still be flitting around come August 16th, and we can celebrate his “half-birthday” along with my “full” one. In any case, he now has a column to officially commemorate his arrival. Just what every fish wants.

Every athlete or coach does his/ her best to win, to earn awards and to be famous. Some people might go farther than they should to achieve this goal. Not only in little leagues or school teams do people cheat, but also in professional leagues. There have been many cases where people have cheated to get what they strived for. Does this mean they should be stripped of their awards? What if it was the coach’s fault and not the athletes? Who should be penalized for it? This year in the NFL, it has been alleged that the Patriots cheated their way into the Super Bowl. They deflated the footballs so it was easier for the quarterbacks and the running backs to hold and the receivers to catch. Every team member had to

have noticed the difference in the footballs, but yet no one did anything. An even bigger surprise is that the coach and quarterback denied any knowledge of it. Did they get what they wanted? Yes. The Patriots cheated their way into winning the Super Bowl. This is not the first time they have cheated to win the Super Bowl. First it was “Spy-Gate”; now it’s Deflate-Gate. However, they weren’t penalized for their actions. They have kept their titles and enjoyed victory parades. Yet, in the case with the Jackie Robinson West team, all the Little League athletes were stripped of their title. In that situation, the team “was stripped of its national title after an investigation revealed that team officials had falsified area boundaries. They did this

to add ineligible players to the roster.” (Newsday) In this case, the athletes couldn’t possibly have been aware of the fact that what the team officials did was illegal. Yet all their hard work had been for nothing. Every win they had was taken away from them. So, why were these children stripped of their titles, but the Patriots got to keep their wins? The Patriots’ wins were the biggest accomplishment in the football industry. Why is it that the little leagues have been stripped of their title but the professional leagues haven’t? Even though cheating in the first place isn’t right, should the athletes be punished if it wasn’t their fault? That’s your opinion to decide.

TWO SENIOR DOGS FOUND TOGETHER On a cold day in January, Little Shelter went out on rescue. This is nothing new; they do it all the time. But on this day, a very special rescue was made. This was the day that Betty and Wilma were given a second chance at life. Betty and Wilma are two senior Labrador mixes. These two ladies were found wandering the streets by a local town shelter. They were aimlessly walking together, in the dead of winter. Of course, Betty and Wilma aren’t their real names; we’ll never know their names. Wilma and Betty weren’t wearing tags and they weren’t microchipped. They simply had to fend for themselves. Wilma is a sweet, sassy Chocolate Lab; and best friend, Betty, is a lively and loveable Black Lab. These wonderful dogs are truly inseparable. Their kennels are right next to each other at Little Shelter, but of course, that’s not close enough. These girls whine and cry for each other and are just ecstatic when then have the opportunity to play together. Betty and Wilma are happy-go-lucky and full of energy. They love people, adore each other and are a pleasure to be with. Because these ladies are so attached, Little Shelter is looking for a family to adopt both of them. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is pleased to announce the names of four students who have been awarded the designation of Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Commended students have earned scores that placed them in the top five percent of all test takers. The Commended Students for 2015 are: • Mary Ferguson of

dedication.” The National Merit Scholarship Program is a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Over 1.5 million students took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. Of all test takers only 34,000 have been awarded the designation of Commended Student.

Scouting’s Good Turn A Scout is helpful. Scouts from the Town’s of Huntington and Smithtown will take part in the Suffolk County Council’s annual Good Turn, Scouting for Food, in the month of March. Armed with paper grocery bags donated by King Kullen Supermarkets, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers will participate in this annual effort to help replenish local food pantries. The area’s Scouts need the community’s support to help feed the hungry

people of Suffolk County. Nonperishable goods (cans and boxes) can be brought to John Glenn High School on Elwood Road, East Northport on Saturday, March 21st, starting at 9 a.m. and no later than 11:30 a.m. Scouts, Scouters, adult volunteers and members of the Huntington/ Smithtown/ Commack/Hauppaugearea communities will assist in sorting and bagging the donated food that is collected. All the food will be distributed to help replenish the shelves

Hoops Star milestone in just three seasons on the team. Ryan, who finished his career with 1,016 points (19.1 avg. per game this season), will represent Brockport State University on the court next winter. He is the second HSE

basketball player to reach the 1,000-career point mark this year. Last month, senior Samantha Delaney achieved this milestone playing for the girls varsity squad.

Mt. Pleasant Elementary School welcomed several guest readers from the school community to read to young children. Administrators from central office, as well as different departments and schools throughout the Smithtown CSD, stopped by to spend some time reading to classes in grades K-5. Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane was among the many guests. Each class appointed students to serve as chaperones to escort their class’ guest readers from the school library to their classroom. Students also engaged in Q&As with their guests about the books they read and other topics relevant to reading.

Tackan Elementary School students created various works of art symbolizing a musical theme. Under the direction of art teacher Claudia Chandler, students studied famous artists and their works, including Pablo Picasso’s “The Violin” and “The Three Musicians.” The artwork of more than 140 students was displayed at the PTA’s Annual Barnes and Noble Night held last month. During PARP, which lasts multiple weeks, activities are planned to inspire students to read with their parents at home, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative.

Dogwood Elementary School held its first Literacy Fair in which students from throughout the building read a book and created visual projects about their books. The Hauppauge High School Wrestling Team was crowned Suffolk County Team Champions on Sunday, February 15th, at Hofstra University. In addition to the Team Championship, Hauppauge put five wrestlers in the Finals and notched seven individual place winners. Jake Silverstein was the Suffolk County Champion at 106 pounds, while Francisco Bisono took home the Championship at 170 pounds. In addition to his victory, Silverstein was recognized as the

Champion of Champions for his performance, which is an award voted on by the other County Champions. Ben Tepperman, Chris Mauriello and Marcus Bisono were runners up at 120, 160 and 182 pounds, respectively. John Donahue took third at 152 pounds, while Alex Donarumma finished fourth at 220 pounds. The Suffolk County Team Champions title is the first for the Eagles since 1999. “Congratulations to all members of the Varsity Wrestling Team as well as to Coaches Chris and

Mike Messina and their staff,” stated Dan Butler, Hauppauge’s director of Physical Education, Athletics, Recreation and Family & Consumer Science. Earlier this year, Coach Chris Messina moved into the record books as the winningest wrestling coach in Suffolk County history. This Suffolk County Team Championship is further testament to the fact that “the impact Chris has had on his wrestlers – on and off the mat – is immeasurable.”

We employ a crew of experienced maintenance personnel who provide a variety of minor home repair services to our senior citizen residents. For example, they repair leaky faucets and running toilets, install locks and make adjustments on doors, replace light fixtures, change hard to reach light bulbs, install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, install bathroom grab bars and indoor railings, clean 1st floor gutters and more! All requests are handled on a first come, first served

basis with preference given to safety related jobs. Emergency services are not provided and “cosmetic” work is not part of our programs. Laura Greif, Program Director explains, “We have two distinct programs. However, the primary objective of both programs is the same. We aim to assist our senior citizen residents with the everyday maintenance of their homes with a focus on the elements that keep them safe and secure.” Our Residential Repair Program assists seniors age 60 and older. While there is no charge for labor, participants pay for, or provide, all materials. Funding for this program is provided by the New York State Office for the

Aging, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and the Town of Smithtown. Our Senior Citizen Home Maintenance Program (SCHMP) assists seniors age 62 and older. All labor and materials are provided at no charge. A brief, annual, financial assessment is required to determine income eligibility. Funding for this program is provided by a federal grant from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Town of Smithtown. teams ahead and fought to gain ground to the bitter end. Keeping her eye on the prize, Cummo also ran a PR with a time of 61.26. The anchor leg, Davis, is the heart and soul of the team. She received the baton virtually tied for sixth, 1.91 seconds out of medal contention. Patience, Patience, Patience. Davis methodically closed the gap, secured a hold on 5th place, slid into 4th, and then made her big move into third. This last move left her missing 2nd place by only 0.55 seconds at the finish line. Following her teammates lead, Davis ran a PR, in a time of 55.94. Of the 24 athletes in the race, Davis had the fastest 400-meter time. Hauppauge won the Bronze medal at the 108th running of the Millrose Games. They broke their old

school record, 4:02.52, by 3.25 seconds, which they set at the Millrose Trails back in January. They also broke the esteemed four-minute barrier, with a time of 3:59.27. Their date with the track on this Valentine’s Day was not a disappointment. “The Bronze medal was the finest looking piece of jewelry the girls had hanging around their necks,” said Dunphy. These four athletes have achieved many great successes while running the 4x400m relay event this season. At the Millrose Trials, they finished first and broke the school record by 3.32 seconds; their time was 4:02.52. At the League #3 Championship Meet, they finished first and broke a two-year-old meet record by 8.95 seconds; their time was 4:13.05. At the Small School County Championships, they finished first and broke a 29 yearold meet record by 2.37 seconds; with a time of 4:06.77. And at these Millrose Games, they broke their school record by 3.25 seconds, with their amazing 3:59.27 performance. According to Dunphy, “this magical season has been full of memories that don’t seem to end.” The team’s Millrose Games performance exceeded the time standard for the 2015 New Balance Nationals Indoor Track & Field Meet. This is the first time a relay team from Hauppauge has qualified for Indoor Nationals. “Even more impressive is that they qualified for the Championship Event in the 4x400-meter relay,” said their coach. The New Balance Indoor Track & Field Nationals are the most prestigious post-season track and field championship meet for high school athletes in the country. More than a million high school athletes compete in Track & Field annually, less than 0.02 percent of those athletes qualify to compete at Nationals.

Hauppauge High School runners Shannon Downey, Nicole Scudero, Casey Cummo and Jasmine Davis placed third in the 4x400m relay at the Millrose Games on Saturday, February 14th. The team finished with a school record time of 3:59.27, shattering their own record of 4:02.52 in the process. The relay team received the bronze medal for their stellar performance. The Millrose Games are the longest running and most prestigious Track and Field Meet in the world. The Games are held at the 168th Street Armory’s New Balance Track & Field Center, which is also home to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. The Armory’s banked track is the fastest track in the world. More than 125,000 athletes compete on the track annually. According to Coach Ed Dunphy, no athlete in Hauppauge’s history, male or female, has ever qualified or competed in the Millrose Games. That changed on Saturday, February 14th, at 2:52 p.m. when the six 4x400 Millrose qualifying relay teams, including Hauppauge, were escorted to the track. The teams represented Nassau and Suffolk’s best of 2015. As their lead off runner, Downey, has set the tone for the girls all season long. Though the day’s race went out exceptionally fast, Downey kept her composure. She didn’t try to do too much on the first lap. A poised Downey ran a PR (personal record). Her split was 60.81. She handed off the baton in a tight pack that included 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place. Scudero, the rookie of the group, brings her Go For It All, hold nothing back right from the start attitude to the field each time she races. However, she promised Coach Dunphy that she would run a controlled first lap, so she wouldn’t run out of steam
