Broadway veterans, performers and musicians are spearheading a fundraiser for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). This production - which is packed with Tony winners, nominees and Broadway stars - will take place at the Syosset campus, 239 Cold Spring Road, at 7 p.m. on March 14th. For more than 40 years, LIHSA has been a training ground for public school students who want to pursue a career in the arts. Most recently, LIHSA gained national attention when Billy Joel held a master class for students and pledged $1 million to help support the program. An Afternoon with Billy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shuffle – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post. It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists. Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity

to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime. In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.

As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint. Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns. Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them. Oh, to have that feeling once again…

Legacies That Last The Suffolk Y JCC has announced a new program for adults who have experienced a significant loss designed to assist in moving the healing process forward. Using the book “The Living Memories Project: Legacies That Last” by Long Island natives Arthur Fishman, Meryl Ain and Stewart Ain as a starting point,

the participants, with the assistance of a trained facilitator, will create a tangible tribute to honor the memory of their loved one. Tributes may take any manner of expression including, but not limited to writing, painting, dancing, scrapbooking, etc. “Legacies that Last was developed to encourage

participants to concentrate on the memories and legacies of their loved one,” stated Eileen Schneyman, the group’s facilitator. “Creating the tribute in a supportive environment will help participants concentrate on the bereavement rather than the raw grief.” The group will meet for eight sessions on

New Appointee

The Hauppauge School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dix Hills resident James Stucchio has been appointed to serve as deputy superintendent of schools of the Hauppauge School District effective February 9th, 2016. In making the announcement, Board of Education President David M. Barshay, Esq., thanked Stucchio for his 10 years of service to the District and his many contributions to the Hauppauge community. Stucchio currently is the assistant superintendent for Business and Operations of the Hauppauge School District. In addition to his existing responsibilities managing the District’s financial component, Stucchio will assist the

superintendent of schools in overseeing all aspects of the District. This includes managing the day-to-day operations as well as the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and initiatives designed to increase the rigor and effectiveness of instruction. As deputy superintendent of schools, he also will assume the responsibilities and duties of the superintendent in his/her absence. “I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to serve in this new role,” Stucchio stated “As Hauppauge begins its next chapter, I look forward to working with all stakeholders to advance the school district to the next level of academic achievement. I am grateful to the Board of Education, staff and community for their confidence in my abilities.” Prior to joining the Hauppauge School District in 2006, Stucchio served as a regional network specialist for the New York City Department of Education. Healthy Habits to Combat Stress asked more than 3,000 participants about their issues with stress. Sixty-four percent said money was a somewhat or very significant source of stress, and that number was even higher for parents (77 percent). Survey respondents also noted that work is a significant source of stress. Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their presentday quality of life.

Fourth-grade students in Susan Rodichok’s class at Smithtown Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District became mini-sleuths on February 11th. Ms. Guglielmo, former Suffolk County Crime Laboratory forensic scientist, created a mock scenario in which

an expensive piece of jewelry was stolen right before Valentine’s Day. Students were tasked with comparing fingerprint cards from four suspects to see if any of the fingerprints matched the print found on the vault, near the item that was stolen. Students also needed to examine animal hair

patterns to see if there was a match to the crime scene evidence. In addition to utilizing their critical thinking skills to solve the crime, students had fun dusting and lifting latent fingerprints and making a tape lift to examine evidence.

Student Artists Shine Sixteen student-artists from Smithtown High Schools East and West took home 31 awards in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The two gold key winners, Anya Beck (High School West) and Brandon Valdez (High School East), will move on to nationals for a chance to compete for $40,000 in scholarships. The Alliance for Young Writers and Artists partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations

across the country to bring the awards to local communities. Students in grades seventh-12th compete in 29 categories of art and writing. Luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients, judge the submissions. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Silver key and honorable mention winners from

Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held a Colonial Day inhouse field trip on February 11th. Representatives from the Smithtown Historical Society were on hand, setting up three different stations in the school library which students rotated through during

their Social Studies period. Students visited the stations – quill and ink writing, candle dipping and wool spinning – while getting a hands-on lesson about what life was like in Colonial times. Games were also set up to play in between stations so students could get a taste for recreational activities

during that era. “This is a nice opportunity for the students to have the Historical Society come here; it’s more engaging for the students to work in this hands-on way instead of going to an outside field trip,” said Accompsett Middle School Principal Paul McNeill.

afternoon in the classroom with them. The first-graders shared a snack together with their special person, worked on a craft and shared in reading their favorite book. Students also

interviewed their special person, gathering facts and information to turn into a story. Students ended the day by reciting a poem, “If You Love Me,” dedicated to their special person.

Help Kids Feel Comfortable at the Dentist Parents may be unaware of the dental health timeline, or they could be reluctant to bring their children for fear of how their kids will behave - especially if parents are harboring their own apprehensions about the dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used.

Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.

Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex

dental issues. Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa. Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you. Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see. Steer clear of negative words. Michael J. Hanna, DMD, a national spokesperson for the AAPD, suggests using positive phrases like “clean, strong, healthy teeth” to make the visit seem fun and positive rather than scary and alarming. Let the office staff come up with their own words to describe processes that won’t seem too frightening. By employing these techniques, kids’ dental visits can be more pleasant for all involved, paving the way for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Team Builds on Win out Longwood School District’s team by just 0.28 points. The competition is part of Mather’s annual Interactive Community Health Fair, which features the da Vinci surgical robot demonstration. Teams of seven students compete using the da Vinci surgical robot simulation. Each member of the team

uses the simulator to complete a series of tasks and is awarded points based on how well they use the robot. The Mechanical Bulls are now continuing their build of their 2016 FIRSTStronghold robot, with which they will compete at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Hofstra University.

Forest Brook Elementary School’s fifth grade students recently participated in a Google Hangout – a Google App that is similar to Skype. The American students were able to see their Spanish counter parts in Barcelona on a large screen in the classroom in addition to having an opportunity to ask each other questions (our students asked their questions in Spanish!) that they had prepared prior to the online meeting. The questions were based on videos about their schools that the students had created and shared with each other prior to the Google Hangout. The

Forest Brook students were amazed to learn that elementary school students in Spain participate in overnight camp stays one night a year beginning at age three. While their native language is Catalán, Barcelona students study both Spanish and English in elementary school. In middle school, they then study Spanish and Catalán and also begin study of a fourth language. The Barcelona students have a 2½ hour mid-day break during which they have lunch, recess and participate in workshops. The Barcelona and Forest Brook students also discovered that they

share several similarities between their two schools. They both have mascots and school colors as well as study multiple subjects with different teachers, including music, physical education, etc. Señora Geronima Maura-Rayó, her sister Señora Antonia MauraRayó and Señora Elena Perelló served as hosts of the Google Hangout. Principal Kristen Reingold and Duane Do, Paul Hyman and Juliette Koronkiewicz from Hauppauge’s Technology Department also provided technical support for this initiative.

Cheer Team Captures Fourth

Hauppauge’s Girls Varsity Cheer Team captured 4th place in the Small Varsity Division at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC), which was recently held in Orlando, Florida. The competition featured teams – comprised of more than 13,000 individuals

from all over the country – which qualified to compete through regional championships. “Congratulations to all of the members of the Varsity Cheer Team and to Coach Laura Candela for this outstanding achievement,” stated Dan Butler, Hauppauge’s director of Athletics, Health,

Recreation and Family and Consumer Science. The NHSCC is the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country. It was held at the Walt Disney World® Resort, and was nationally televised on ESPN and ESPN2 to more than 100 million homes and 32 countries nationwide.

A number of area high school seniors will be given a break on college costs, as the Long Island credit union NEFCU kicks off its annual Making a Difference Family Scholarship program that will award up to 12 students with at least $1,000 toward a college scholarship. The Westbury-based credit union will begin accepting applications from high school seniors

February 25. The deadline for applications is April 29, with the winners announced in mid-June. Those applying must have a four-year overall GPA of 90 or above, and have dedicated a minimum of 50 hours toward community service work and projects. The program is open to any high school senior who is a NEFCU member or has a parent/guardian who is a member.

Anyone who lives or works on Long Island can become a NEFCU member with just a $5 deposit. The application requirement includes an essay, an unofficial school transcript and documented proof of community service. “We’re all too familiar with the rising cost of education, and this is just one way we’re helping ease some of the financial burden for our members,”
