HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Collaborating to Create Fifth-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District had the opportunity to be hands-on engineers using Tinkering Labs on February 8th. Tinkering Labs are individual kits that come with 10 basic engineering challenges, and more than 50 pieces that can be used to complete the challenges. The pieces include an

electronic motor, gears, safety goggles and more. These exercises help reinforce the principles of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) with a fun and engaging twist. Students in Mrs. Janine Sena’s fifth-grade class were challenged to create a machine that could scramble an egg, and groups excitedly got started right away, bouncing ideas

off of one another. “There’s so much value in students truly collaborating and problem solving together,” said Mrs. Sena. “We give them virtually no direction, and when they finish the task, it’s all them. And they’re proud.” By the end of the session, every group had created a working machine, and the students were beaming with pride.

year, the collection of photos has grown around his classroom walls. Over the years, he has amassed more than 1,000 student photos. “Many of the students come back to my class to see the younger version of themselves or a sibling, friend or neighbor,” Stapleton said. This helps him to reconnect with his former students.

Some former students have even followed in Stapleton’s footsteps and found a career in education. This year, a couple of his former students have positions as a teacher assistant, coach and student-teacher in Smithtown Central School District.

INTERFAITH CELEBRATION - A Scout is Reverent... Boy Scout Troop 888 (Nesconset) participated in the scout interfaith weekend celebration. Scout Shabbat was held at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge on February 9th. Services were led by Rabbi Rhonda Nebel. Scout Sunday was held at St. Andrews Lutheran Church (Smithtown) on February 11th, 2018. The mass was led by Pastor Jonathan Pryer. Troop 888 enjoyed learning about other’s religions and all that we have in common with each other.

America’s Got Talent Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU), a music school that teaches children and adults of all abilities, recently had two of its students audition for the 13th Season of America’s Got Talent (AGT). AGT held auditions in the New York City area as part of its 2017-2018 Tour of the United States. Taylor Trebing, 16, of Smithtown and Giuliana Gallone, 11, Fort Salonga,

joined thousands of AGT hopefuls as they began their journey towards stardom. “I’m proud of how the girls performed that day,” said Jessica Gallone, owner RNRU. “It was a long, but fun process. The girls learned a lot about themselves, and I believe the whole experience was worth it,” she continued. Taylor and Giuliana hope

to hear back from AGT by the end of February. RNRU supports inclusionary participation within their performance groups. Children and people of all abilities perform together on the same stage; with each child performing in one, or more, bands. RNRU supports a positive social atmosphere for children, and their families.

The Fashion Foundation A Unique Boutique with a Selfless Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. From January 29th to February 9th, Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District is celebrating literacy by participating in the Parents As Reading Partners program. Each day, the school joined together for different activities, such as “Read My Shirt” day, “Be A Character” day, game day and drop everything and

read day to make reading fun. On February 7th, students went to school dressed in their pajamas, ready to listen to stories from special guest readers throughout the day. Outstanding musicians from Catholic schools across Long Island performed in the 37th annual Honor Band Concert last weekend. This unique music event was presented by Paul Effman Music Service and included students from 46 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese.

Seventeen students from Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park had the privilege of being selected to perform in the concert. It was a wonderful evening of thrilling music and the theater at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington was filled with cheers of “Bravo!” and “Encore!” as

the final strains of John Philip Sousa filled the hall. Congratulations to all of the dedicated performers from SSCM and all Long Island Catholic Schools and many thanks to Miss Wilke for sharing her time and talent with SSCM and enriching their lives with the love of music!

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. A random sample of Grant campus students were sent an email inviting them to participate in the survey that will be conducted three times over the next five years. The results of the survey will give the coalition a better understanding of current substance use issues and in turn will guide their prevention efforts.

Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus Chemical Dependency Counseling (CDC) Program has launched a community coalition to reduce underage alcohol use, tobacco and other drug consumption on the campus as well as in the surrounding Brentwood community. The effort is being funded by a $690,704, five-year, New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) - College Environmental Prevention Grant awarded to the college last year and unanimously adopted by the Suffolk County Legislature on February 6th. A newly formed campus community coalition is the driving force behind the effort and will implement strategies to reduce availability and problems associated with drinking,
