Westy Self Storage continues its support for the 12th consecutive year of the Prom Boutique sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center. Westy Self Storage in East Northport is pleased to host this drive as a designated collection site for donations of new and gently-used prom gowns, bridesmaid dresses, special occasion dresses, shoes, handbags and costume jewelry. Donations are accepted through March 1. Westy has also provided free storage space for the items collected and will assist in transporting them to the Prom Boutique. The Prom Boutique distributes all dresses and accessories free of charge to young women of families across Long Island who cannot easily absorb the expense of a new gown to attend their prom, graduation, sweet
sixteen or other significant occasion. Now in its 26th year, the Prom Boutique has helped thousands of deserving young women feel confident at their special event in the gown of their choice. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike, across from Barnes and Noble. “In addition to high school graduates who would not otherwise have been able to attend prom, the program has benefited entire families who are given relief from the financial burden and stress associated with planning for a special event such as prom,” said Simone Solz Leo, Executive Director of Long Island Volunteer Center. “We are overwhelmed by the amount of support Westy continues to provide. In 2015, a local grandmother suddenly had to take on full-time care of her young granddaughter and for this, she was not prepared. Debbie Loesch and her daughter Brittany turned to social media to simply ask random people if they had the items that were needed and if they be willing to donate them to this woman in her moment of need. Various people within certain Facebook groups did not take well to these requests and the motherdaughter duo caught some very negative backlash. Believing that there would be many people willing to help if they knew of the immediate need, they created a new Facebook Page: Angels of Long Island. With the purest of intention, neighbors helping neighbors, once again they asked friends and family “Can you help this woman, a neighbor, in need?” Quickly about 200 people connected to their page and within one week the woman’s needs were meet. And so it began, Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Knowing there were so many others in need, Debbie and Brittany started collecting whatever people were willing to donate. They stored it throughout their house and yard. As the
stockpile grew, they used a trailer, sheds, tents and tarps to not allow anything to go to waste knowing at some time, someone may need it. They were now consistently matching up many people to what they needed and knew they were on to something big. In 2017 Angels of LI opened a 3800 square foot thrift store located at 350-23 E. Main Street in Patchogue. Now they have all their donations displayed in a store setting. When someone is in crisis or moving from crisis to something more stable, they can come in and simply shop for what they need. Bed linens, furniture, pots and pans, clothes (within some guidelines of course) but all for free! The thrift store is open to the public to come purchase items as well. The money raised from sales directly supports the many other services their outreach program provides. With the help of their now over 60,000 followers, the Patchogue location hosts a few annual events all in line with their mission. The Angels, who are run solely by volunteers, turn their entire parking lot into an extension of the store. They set up a system for families during their “Back to School” event to go through and choose many items such as backpacks, school supplies, clothes, and shoes.
As the cold sets in, they host a “Warm Coat Giveaway”, where hundreds of coats are beautifully displayed and those who need one can shop freely to choose which one is right for them. No questions asked and no one gets turned away. This past Christmas, the set up what was that of a toy store, both new and used toys were on display and many parents were able to come in and shop. To meet other immediate needs for its neighbors throughout the year, a back corner of the store serves as a food pantry. The shelves often have bread, cereal, baby food and snacks. Brittany and Debbie, however, don’t stop there. They have proactively and aggressively gone to many of our school districts to find the underserved, the hungry and those in need of assistance. They’ve teamed up with some districts to join various programs and are utilizing these opportunities to feed hundreds of hungry children each month. Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) was named a Finalist in the Social Impact category in The 8th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Board Of Education Honors Student Accomplishments
In an effort to engage community members and parents from throughout the district, Smithtown Central School District held its Jan. 28 board of education meeting at Mills Pond Elementary School. To start the meeting, the Mills Pond fourth grade chorus performed two songs for the audience and board members: “Lean on Me” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Afterward,
members of the Mills Pond Cares Club, a community service group, presented a check for $785 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation from money raised at their healthy snacks sale. The board of education recognized two students who were named Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars – Stephanie Lin from Smithtown High School West and Caitlin Wilkinson
from Smithtown High School East. Following the recognitions, Kira Conte, a science research student from Smithtown High School East, presented her social-emotional learning research and findings conducted at Mills Pond Elementary titled “Think Positive! The effect of Growth Mindset Training on Academic Attitude.”
