Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think? Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt
and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere. Like I said, is it spring yet? So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?
Awesome, sign me up! Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel! Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes. Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week. Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

Ms. Murdock’s sister has suffered with postpartum depression and psychosis. Mr. Ronayne served in the U.S. Navy from 1979-1983. He has conducted operations including the evacuation of hostile forces in Beirut, Lebanon as well as part of the United Nations Multinational Peace Keeping Forces and anti submarine warfare operations around the world. The Mental Health Association in Suffolk is an advocacy organization devoted to improving the mental health of the community through education, workforce training, and information and referral services. MHAS is a local chapter of
a statewide and national and network association of local MHAs. Its mission is: “To promote mental wellness by means of support services, education and advocacy.” MHAS is in the process of a full merger with Suffolk County United Veterans and Clubhouse of Suffolk. SCUV provides emergency, transitional, and permanent housing to at-risk and homeless veterans along with case management, education and vocational services, a food pantry, and a Countywide peer support program, the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran PTSD Peer Support Project. Clubhouse offers psychiatric rehabilitation, treatment, support services and care management for adults affected by mental illness. We Are All Destined For Something
Last week, with the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in full swing, I made the realization that, much like those athletes, we are all destined for something. Whether it is a Gold Medal or last place, we are all put on this Earth for some reason. We may not always come out on top, but it is crucial to acknowledge that everything happens for a reason. This same idea can be applied to our everyday lives. Although we may not be Olympians, we are crusaders in our own right. Each day, we are training ourselves to excel much like Shaun White and Shani Davis; we are trying to attain perfection.
There is, however, no such thing as perfection when it comes to humanity. As demonstrated by these two stars, even professionals are mortal. When we do succeed, it is essential to recognize that we may have gotten lucky. There will always be someone just a little bit faster or a few inches taller. Nothing is certain, and we must earn what comes our way. It is all part of the master plan, and sometimes things work out. There is no such thing as a guarantee. Even Gold Medalists don’t get perfect scores. With this being said, it is perfectly understandable that we may fail in our
everyday lives. There is no guarantee that practice will lead to greatness. We can still fall short of our goals. I try to implement this mindset into every facet of my persona. With college decisions steadily flowing in, I realize that I am not perfect. It would be irrational to think that I would be accepted to all of the colleges that I applied to. Rejection is an essential part of life, as losing is a key element of the Olympics. Much like the Olympians, I know that every failure occurs for a reason. Although on a much smaller scale, my futile pursuit of excellence is a model of their determination, perseverance and trial.

Event honorees Sonia Murdock, Executive Director of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York; and Thomas Ronayne, Director of the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency gave passionate speeches to business executives and
non-profit leaders, friends, family, and politicians on the healthcare strengths and needs of people living on Long Island, New York. Sonia Murdock, an international advocate and educator on mental health related to childbearing, eloquently spoke about the gap in education, treatment and support services regarding postpartum depression/psychosis as well as the support and resources available to mothers and families who are experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, to include postpartum depression. Thomas Ronayne spoke about the need for advocacy and casework services for our Veterans, to include housing, career assistance, and academic opportunities. As administrator of the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program, Mr. Ronayne spoke on

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on teenagers. Help is available at most public libraries in the form of a DVD. Some libraries have an older video format. “It’s meant to encourage teens, to tell them that there is hope out there,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of three nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. David Wilkins, a high school student who stutters, narrates the DVD. It features students from junior high school through college talking about their experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and how their stuttering affects their lives. “We really try

Urging Action
DuWayne Gregory, the first person of color to be elected presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, called on those attending the Town of Huntington’s 27th Annual Black History Month celebration to continue working hard to promote equality and to lead the fight for safer neighborhoods. “Racism is indeed not a race at all. There is no finish line, there is no victory lap and we cannot allow there to be winners and losers,” Leg. Gregory said in delivering the keynote address during the February 6 program held at the recently-reopened Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School in Huntington Station. “We must not permit the complacency of our past gains to allow our future generations to lose the pathway to hope and prosperity because if we do, we are no better than those who sought to enslave, disenfranchise and sacrifice us just in order to get there.” Legis. Gregory singled out as a call to action the fight for safer neighborhoods – an effort, he said, that needs to be rooted in community involvement. “I want to call upon the leaders of our communities, many of whom are familiar with the efforts of the civil rights movement, to use the same energy and passion to push back against what we are seeing in too many of our communities today,” he said. “There is too much violence, too many gangs, plaguing our communities…We have to stand up to it. We can’t let it exist any longer. It can’t be somebody else’s responsibility any longer.” Legis. Gregory, who has served in the Legislature since 2008 and who was the majority leader before being chosen as presiding officer earlier this year, represents a district that includes the diverse communities of Wheatley Heights, Wyandanch, North Amityville, parts of Amityville village, parts of North Lindenhurst, West Babylon, North Babylon and the portion of Farmingdale which lies in Suffolk County. His remarks headlined a program that included comments from all the members of the Huntington Town Board, dramatic readings and musical performances.
In his remarks, Supervisor Frank Petrone told the audience of about 300 people, “Tonight, we as a community join together to celebrate a very rich history, a history that is imbedded in all our communities throughout this great land, and especially in Huntington. You came to help build this great Town, and stayed to continue those great contributions. Tonight, we celebrate those contributions.” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said, “What we have accomplished in Huntington Station in reopening a school is something to celebrate. It is in the same vein that we come together tonight. We celebrate how much has been accomplished in our country, but we know that we have to be vigilant to maintain what we have and to continue progress ... We have to have goals for the future
so we can truly realize that dream.” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland cited a favorite quote from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. “I ask you all, what grounds could be broken if we all heeded those words, how many mountains could be moved?” Councilwoman Berland said. “What darkness could be overcome by refusing to bow down to injustice
and hatred. Our histories can’t be changed, but we can work together in harmony, celebrating our common humanity and making a better future for all of us.” Councilman Eugene Cook noted the listing of inventions attributed to persons of color in the printed program. “These are great things that these people have done, and it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, we all have to go forward together,” he said. Councilwoman Tracey Edwards, who last year became the second person of color to be elected to the Huntington Town Board, spoke of the personal reaction upon seeing her name on the cover of the printed program, which included pictures of Dr. King, Nelson Mandela and Pres. Barak Obama: “My goal is to ensure that all of those children who are here have the same opportunity that I had, the same opportunity that you have given to me,” she said. Also on the program, Ronald Worrell, a Town Department of Human Services employee with classic dramatic training, read a selection from the play “The River Niger” and Huntington High School graduate Kim Hallman performed a poem she had written called “Rejected.” The musical performances were highlighted by Walt Whitman High School junior Kalif Omani Jones. The 16-year-old, who is a member of the New York City Collegiate Chorale and who has performed at Carnegie Hall, with the Metropolitan Opera and on HBO, sang the National Anthem and the song, “I Believe I Can Fly.” The L.W. Smith Youth ensemble, under the direction of Minister Timothy Flythe, led the singing of the Negro National Anthem. The Huntington Outreach Ministry, led by the Rev. Jerry Artis and co-directed by Pastor Bernadette Watkins, sang a tribute to the late Nelson Mandela. The Bethel AME Church’s tabernacle choir also performed. Bishop Dr. Lionel W. Smith of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church delivered both the invocation and the benediction.

Winter Survival Tips Many hazards come with winter driving, but the possibility of being stranded may be one of the worst. If you get stranded while driving, here are some tips geared at helping you survive: Plan Your Route: Don’t use back roads to avoid traffic or save time. Take heavily traveled routes where more people can spot you. Also, main roads are the first areas that rescue workers will reach in emergencies. If you must drive, travel during the day and don’t travel alone. Tell family or friends where you are going, the route you will take and when you expect to arrive. Stay With Your Vehicle: While it will get cold,
your vehicle is your best protection against wind and exposure. Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Abandon your car only as a last resort. A single person walking through the snow is much harder to find than a stranded vehicle. Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is winterized and in good driving condition. Keep your gas tank full. This will keep the fuel line from freezing and allow you to run the engine for heat for a longer time. Pack A Winter Survival Kit: The kit should contain non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, blankets, tea light candles (for warmth), waterproof
matches, flares, tools or a multi-function knife, a small mirror (for signaling), brightly colored cloth/plastic (for visibility), tow chain/ strap and a small pot for melting snow (to drink). Use The Heater Sparingly: Running your engine and heater for ten minutes every hour is enough to keep you warm while also conserving fuel. While the engine is running, slightly open a downwind window for fresh air. Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Keeping Moving: At least once an hour, vigorously move your arms, hands, legs, feet
and toes to improve circulation and keep warm. Important: Don’t exercise enough to get hot or sweaty. Wet clothes lose insulation value, making you susceptible to hypothermia. Also, avoid use of cigarettes or alcohol as these will reduce your ability to stay warm. Stay Hydrated: The keys to winter survival are to stay dry, hydrated and warm. Drink fluids sparingly over time to avoid dehydration. Don’t put snow in your mouth as a source of liquid, always melt it first. “Eating” snow will lower your body temperature, increasing your risk of hypothermia. Make Your Vehicle Easy
To Find: Tie a piece of brightly colored cloth or plastic to your antenna or hang it out of a window. When running the engine at night, turn on interior lights if you hear rescuers nearby. Rescuers can see a small glow at a considerable distance. To reduce battery drain, use emergency flashers only if you hear approaching vehicles. If the snow has stopped falling, open the hood of the car as a distress signal. Keep the roof of your car free of snow so it’s visible from the air. Communicate: Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged. Call 911 and describe your location as precisely as possible. Keep calls brief
to save your battery. Sending text messages for help has the best chance of getting through while minimizing battery loss. Don’t Expect To Be Comfortable: The goal is to endure until you’re found. Remember that the keys to survival are to remain calm and patient, and to be prepared.

With support from the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth), 25 organizations across New York State are ramping up their efforts to prevent diabetes. Grant awards totaling more than $400,000 will help community-based organizations from local health departments and health systems to community health centers and YMCAs - implement and expand the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP). This 16-week program, which focuses on lifestyle changes to improve healthy eating and physical activity, uses a well-tested model that could help the 4.5 million New Yorkers with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing the disease by 50%. “New York State is facing a serious and costly health crisis, with nearly 25%
of the population already living with diabetes,” said James R. Knickman, President and CEO of NYSHealth. “We need to focus energy and resources on preventing the onset of diabetes and a whole host of other health problems related to obesity. The NDPP model is the most well-tested diabetes prevention program out there, and pushing it out to more New Yorkers in some of the hardest-hit communities across the State will be an important component of curbing the diabetes epidemic.” With this more than $400,000 investment, the Foundation will reach communities with high rates of diabetes and prediabetes, and make the NDPP available to New Yorkers in places where they live, work, and worship. The grantees selected have the potential
for large-scale statewide or regionwide impact on spreading and sustaining the NDPP, which has been lauded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an effective, evidence-based public health program. The NDPP is a community-based program conducted by trained lifestyle coaches to teach people with prediabetes how to modify
their eating and physical activity habits, and to sustain those changes over time. Each one-hour class includes lessons on diet, exercise, staying motivated, overcoming stress, and other behavioral changes, all in a supportive group setting. The goal is to help people reduce their weight through a healthy low-calorie, low-fat diet and by engaging in at least 150 minutes per week
