Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for

In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester. “FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state. We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program before the February 20th deadline.” Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP student-volunteer firefighter can pursue either on a full-time or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels

Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called. If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right? So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes. It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

RECESS ROOM - Forest Brook was pleased to launch the Indoor Recess Room this past month. “The Indoor Recess Room was an idea born from the Site Based Management Team,” described Principal Kristen Reingold. “The Team wanted to provide students with an opportunity to have physical activity during the winter months as well as on days when there is inclement weather.” Several of the play items were donated by the PTA and the community. “Forest Brook students are actively using the room on a daily basis and are having a great time while they are expending lots of physical energy,” said Ms. Reingold.

letters from the children that are on display at the hospital from the “Support Our Troops” drive that the Commack School District held in November. “Our letters and cards are displayed at the hospital and we even received some pictures of soldiers holding them,” said Mrs. Gandolfi. “After Mr. Brogan reached out to me and my class to send thanks from him

and all of the military men and women staying at the hospital, I was so touched that we involved the entire school in the Valentine’s Day project. What a tremendous lesson for the students! They are taught that we live in a free and wonderful country, because of the brave men and women who are in our military.”

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. Bretton Woods’ 5th grade students set out to explore and participate in various career opportunities during Career Week – ranging from a doctor, FBI agent and/or rock star, to almost everything else in between. The 5th grade Career Fair offered the students an opportunity to learn about a variety of careers as well as different aspects of college with community professionals as well as with a college counselor. The students explored career paths, responsibilities, likes and dislikes and how

their current education relates to the world of work. The entire 5th grade also worked on career research projects with Librarian Melissa McParland and Library Aide Christine Rapacki. Sixty-nine of the students volunteered to be career ambassadors. Two to three career ambassadors visited each kindergarten through 4th grade class in the school to share what they learned about the career path they researched. Some students dressed the part in uniforms required for

specific careers, while others created elaborate display boards depicting the responsibilities of their dream job. “Dress for Success Day” was another part of Bretton Woods’ Career Week. “We saw future doctors, veterinarians, FBI agents, police officers, professional athletes, rock stars and beyond walking in our halls,” stated Principal George Gagliardi, who shared his desk with one enterprising young man. “What a bright future we all can look forward to!”

Eagle Honoree Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta praised Andrew Oswald of St. James for achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor. Andrew has been an active scout since age six when he was in first grade. For his Eagle Scout Community Service Project, Andrew refurbished the interior and exterior of the Barred Owl cage at

the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. A representative from Sweetbriar attended the ceremony and brought one of the owls with her to show to the audience. “Andrew has demonstrated he is capable of responsibility and leadership by completing the tasks necessary to becoming an Eagle Scout. He received a baseball scholarship to attend the University of Bridgeport

where he is pursuing a degree in Sports Medicine. I am sure that the skills and confidence he acquired during his scouting years will guide him in his future endeavors. I applaud his work ethic and athletic abilities and hope that he will remain committed to the 13th Legislative District,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

On National Letter of Intent Day, 19 studentathletes from the Smithtown CSD accepted athletic scholarships and signed commitments to take their talents to the playing fields and courts of their respective chosen colleges. Patrick Smith, Smithtown CSD coordinator of physical education, health, athletics and nurses, conducted signing ceremonies at both Smithtown High Schools East and West, where each student-athlete was congratulated before their families and their coaches.

Smith emphasized three influencing factors behind the success of these young men and women: community, family and district support. “It’s a prestigious honor,” Smith said. “Most school districts have two to three student-athletes who receive this type of commitment. As a district, we have 19. In addition to their athletic prowess, they have demonstrated a high standard of academic achievement.” By signing a National Letter of Intent, a prospective studentathlete agrees to attend

the designated college or university for a minimum of one academic year. Pursuant to the terms of the National Letter of Intent program, participating institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid to the studentathlete, provided he/she is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules. Although Ivy League schools do not award athletic scholarships, HSE senior lacrosse star John Daniggelis committed to play at Yale University, despite offers from other accredited schools.

Record Breaker allows her to stay in shape while multitasking. In fact, as Rachel was breaking the record, she was simultaneously watching a chemistry lesson on her laptop. Rachel is also a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and member of three honor societies with several AP classes already completed. According to her mother, Janet Rock, she’s also completed a science research program at Stony Brook University, advanced to the semifinal round at the LIU Post Neurology Bee, viewed a stem cell transplant in New York City, created a mural that was displayed at the Sweetbriar Nature Center and recently

scored a perfect 150 on a psychology paper. She has applied to the top research schools in the country including George Washington, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, University of Chicago and Yale. HSW physical education teacher Deron Brown learned of Rachel’s interest in planking and encouraged her to go for the record. Brown, along with Principal John Coady and her family and friends were among the first of many spectators on hand to congratulate Rachel when she broke the record. Guinness World Records will review the recorded footage to confirm the results.

Smithtown High School West senior Rachel Rock is a world record holder. Before a small audience of family, friends, staff and schoolmates who gathered in the school gymnasium on February 6th, Rachel set the women’s world record for the longest time holding the abdominal plank position. Her time was 2 hours, 13 minutes and 5 seconds, breaking a record previously held by Eva Bulzomi of Boise, Idaho. Life Jacket Loaners The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the

mission of promoting safe boating practices. To help promote life jacket use, the Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 250 life jacket loaner stands nationwide where boaters may borrow life jackets for free for a day of safe fun on the water. The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been

loaned to boaters through the program. “Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,” said Sea Tow Foundation Executive Director Gail R. Kulp, CAE. “These new life jacket loaner stations will be open in time for

the 2015 summer boating season so that boaters around the country can have the opportunity to borrow a life jacket for a day out on the water.” Life jacket loaner program applications now are being accepted through March 1st, 2015. Basketball Tournament Set Students - more than 50 in all - from Suffolk County Community College’s Radio and Television Production program are gearing up and practicing for what amounts to their Super Bowl Sunday of broadcast production, the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XV Basketball Tournament that will be hosted for the second consecutive

year at the college’s Ammerman Campus in Selden and livestreamed via SharksTV on the College’s website to hoops-hungry fans. Student camera operators, stage managers, switchers, audio and video technicians are preparing and practicing for the Friday, February 27th to Sunday, March 1st tournament when they will present eight live

games over the three days from five camera positions throughout the Brookhaven Gymnasium; including four instant replay angles. Alan Bernstein, Assistant Academic Chair, Department of Communications said the experience garnered by the students is invaluable. “This is an all hands on deck production and tremendous opportunity for our students to acquire

real life production experience,” Bernstein said. Bernstein said that alumni of his program will also be involved. Among those alumni will be Eric Abram and Rich Ballato, who regularly work on professional sports telecasts in the New York area. Prior to tournament weekend, the students will lay cable, check lighting, conduct sound checks

and create graphics and introductions for each of the tournament’s 16 participating teams. Suffolk County Community College has equipped student-based teams with the skills and systems needed to produce professional, top-quality webcasts, streamed over its website. The college’s remote production van is equipped with state-of the-art Newtek Tricaster

860 production systems and a Newtek 3Play 425 video record and playback system. The student tournament webcast was watched last year by an international audience and by viewers state-wide. This year’s broadcast will be available from the Suffolk County Community College homepage at www. sunysuffolk.edu during the tournament weekend.

Island’s groundwater, bays and estuaries. Pharmaceuticals have been detected at low levels in New York State waterways and Long Island’s shallow groundwater. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said, “We are thrilled that DEC was able to provide this critical service, which benefits all Long Islanders and goes a long way toward protecting Long Island’s drinking and surface waters from pharmaceutical contaminants. Giving health care facilities a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications, and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.” Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products.

Prescription drug take back efforts began in the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater. Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways. Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water. Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested. Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected over 52 boxes of pharmaceutical medications during the first DEC Long Island Pharmaceutical Take Back Day at healthcare facilities, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. Twenty-five long-term healthcare facilities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the program, which collects and responsibly destroys unused or expired pharmaceuticals. “Health care facilities can produce large amounts of expired or unused medications and many have few options for disposal,” said Commissioner Martens. “The success of this collection by DEC is a positive step that will help to protect the environment by preventing medications from entering waterways. We are grateful to all the facilities that enthusiastically agreed to participate in this event.” DEC received funding through the Environmental Fund for $150,000 to expand the program, which already exists in the New York City Watershed. The program is designed to reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are “flushed” by facilities and can end up in Long
