Applebee’s 5th Annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest Applebee’s to honor two deserving teachers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties

A p p l e b e e ’ s Neighborhood Grill & Bar recently announced the official launch of its 5th annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which recognizes top teachers – as nominated by their students – by rewarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers, one in

Nassau County and one in Suffolk County, with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 20212022 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class*! To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee’s “Teacher of the Year.” As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use.

Essay submissions are limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee’s restaurants from through Sunday March 7, no later than 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 12 and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Sunday, June 27. If end-of-year parties are not viable, class parties will be replaced with two Dinner for Four certificates. “We’re excited to announce the launch of our fifth annual Above and BEEyond Teacher Essay Contest at our

Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau February 2021 Events

The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau announces a variety of upcoming youth and young adult programs planned for the month of February. In partnership with Microsoft-Huntington Station, the Youth Bureau will offer several programs in February. On Wednesday, February 17th, the Minecraft Hour of Code Workshop will be held from 11AM to noon virtually. Students ages eight and older will have fun learning and being inspired by Minecraft, computer science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Using the power of code and AI, students will learn to program a character to prevent forest fires and regrow a forest. On February 18th, middle and high school students are invited to participate in the Black History Museum: Virtual Museum Experience from 3PM to 4:30PM. Students will virtually visit this museum and learn about the Freedom Riders in the 1960’s, and the work they did to protest segregation in public transportation. After the event, students can email the Youth

Bureau and request a Town Certificate of Community Service Credit for participation. The Youth Bureau will have a live virtual encounter with the butterflies and bugs of the Long Island Aquarium on February 19th from 10AM to 10:40AM. This free program is limited to 30 participants. On Friday, February 23rd, there will be a District 7255 Virtual Student Interact Meeting for any students interested in learning more about the Interact Club’s community service and leadership opportunities. This meeting will be held from 7PM to 8PM. Interact Clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community, and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary Club adults sponsor, mentor, and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills. St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Islip Rotary are feeding the hungry while supporting the struggling local restaurants. Called the South Shore Takeout Project, the two groups are conducting a fundraiser of sorts throughout the South Shore communities, asking people to purchase restaurant gift cards so people can purchase a meal for their families. St. Mark’s will then donate the cards to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares, an organization that supplies church food pantries, senior communities and shelters throughout Suffolk County. The program is expected to run through the end of March. “The pandemic has wreaked havoc with our economy,” said St. Mark’s rector, the very reverend Richard E. Simpson." People have lost jobs and can barely feed their families.

A restaurant gift card will either be a much-needed meal or a treat,” he said, adding that February 17 is also Ash Wednesday and pointed to the Bible story of “the feeding of 5000.” He continued: Restaurant business is down to about 30% of their usual income and relies heavily on takeout or curbside pick-up for revenue. Many are either closed or due to close.” Said organizer Irene Ross “We’d like the gift cards to be substantial enough to buy full meals; some restaurants have family or catering packages that could feed an entire family for one night (with maybe even some leftovers for another day’s lunch or dinner). The organization is looking to raise $6,000 to help cover the cost of hay bales. Pal-O-Mine’s herd, which includes 22 horses, eats 10 bales of hay each day. Each bale weighs 50 lbs. and costs $10, making New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS), one of the Nation’s leading oncology practices, announced it will provide full-time Supportive and Palliative Care services throughout their cancer centers on Long Island and New York City. Palliative care, often misconstrued as end of life or hospice care, is a medical discipline aimed at improving the quality of life for patients with a serious, lifelimiting, advanced illness. NYCBS’ expansion in the integration of palliative care seeks to enhance the quality of care patients receive by focusing on what their goals of care and treatment are. NYCBS provides advanced care planning, identifies patient’s wishes, and symptom management in local, outpatient settings helping patients control pain and enhance their quality of life, which leads to better outcomes. Isaac Hardoon, DO, Chief of Division is a renowned physician leading the Supportive and Palliative Care program and providing additional supportive resources and comprehensive care both

in-person and remotely. The program is designed to alleviate some of the physician burdens in managing symptoms and side effects with NYCBS’ team of physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers, and psychologists. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

cancer treatment. Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. Girl Scouts Take Action Girl Scout Troop 1986 Members in the fourth grade at Burr Intermediate School spent four months learning about what stereotypes are, how they limit our choices, how we recognize stereotypes in the world around us, and how we can choose to not accept stereotypes and make our own path in the world. The result of their efforts are displayed on a bulletin board at the school and is drawing a lot of positive interaction by the students and staff at Burr.

Assistant Principal Donna Forbes, a former Girl Scout herself, said, “We are thrilled and thankful that Junior Troop 1986 was able to share this ‘Take Action’ journey project at Burr as they prepare for their Bronze award. The project created a valuable opportunity for Burr students to learn more about recognizing/ identifying stereotypes and the dangers stereotypes can pose by limiting the choices and options open to everyone. The series of posters and artwork are

creatively detailed and it is evident that this group of future leaders spent a great deal of time researching the topic to accomplish this! They have clearly taken action to share what they have learned to make the world around them a better place!” Congratulations to the girls in Troop 1986 and their leaders, Alyssa Saffer and Danielle Cook, for spreading the message, “Don’t let others limit your choices by stereotyping who YOU can be!”

Black History Month evolved from Negro History Week, which was created in 1926 in the United States by historian Carter G. Woodson. Woodson chose the second week in February because it coincided with both the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12)

and Frederick Douglass (February 14). The prominent civil rights group The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, was also founded on February 12 on the centennial anniversary of the birth of Lincoln. Each of these things makes February an ideal time to celebrate black history. Negro History Week continued through the 1960s and ultimately

Black History Month evolved into an entire month of celebrating on some college campuses. However, Black History Month would not receive national recognition in the United States until 1976, when President Gerald Ford officially recognized it as an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of black Americans throughout history. Canada officially recognized Black History Month in 1995.
