Annual Polar Bear Scouting Skills Camporee Weekend, held this year at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in Wading River during the January 29th-31st weekend, followed the theme of “Red, White, and Blue.” The Scouts participated at the “Snowshoes Event” - everyone onto the 6-foot long 2x6 boards - to “walk” the patrol a distance of 100 feet between the buckets, where teamwork and communication were the skills that were focused on. The Birthday Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring. There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have. Here’s to many more!

The recent blizzard did not stop the Hauppauge Middle School students from presenting an excellent rendition of Bye Bye Birdie, directed by Jacob and Simon Pincus. The play follows the stories of two women characters who are notso-subtly manipulating their male counterparts. Although Rosie (played by Katie Dolce) and Kim (played by Kellianne Parrett) are about 20 years apart in age, both experience a sort of epiphany at the same time in the musical realizing that their male significant others have been holding them back. This is an impactful statement from a musical that was written in 1957 satirizing that very

time period in which it was written. Generations and gender roles collide and collapse when rock star, Conrad Birdie (played by Michael Seda), arrives in Sweet Apple in this incredibly relevant musical written almost 40 years before Justin Bieber was born! “While putting up this musical, there was a lot of discussion about working together, the ensemble, community and commitment,” stated Pincus.” The cast gained an understanding of the great amount of effort it takes to put on a musical and work together as a team.” Rehearsals regularly began by playing “keep it up” with a medium-sized green bouncy ball, “so the

students could understand what it means for everyone to contribute and not ‘drop the ball’,” described Pincus. “The students showed signs of leadership and cooperation, and we saw great growth in every student throughout the process. We were inspired by the enthusiasm and hard work that they brought with them every day to rehearsal.” According to Pincus, “The end product didn’t need to be a musical. We had three months to provide 60 middle schoolers with a common goal. The magic comes from the fact that these 60 middle schoolers came together and made something in these three months.”

North Ridge Primary School in Commack held its annual “Souper Bowl” and collected a total of 3,903 cans and bags of soup. Mrs. Esposito, the gym teacher at North Ridge, decided to “sculpt” the cans into the shape of a giant airplane. Each day when the

children came to gym, they were amazed at how well the sculpture was taking shape and this motivated them to bring in more and more soup. All the soup was donated to Long Island Cares, which is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger action organizations.

Long Island Cares serves individuals and families in need, and much of their success is due to the support they receive from donations. Congratulations to Mrs. Eberhardt and Mrs. Povey’s class who won the “Souper Bowl” by donating over 1,000 cans of soup.

Samantha Miller, a senior at Commack High School, was recently named a News 12 Long Island/Bethpage Federal Credit Union Scholar Athlete. A three-sport all-star, Samantha excels in soccer, basketball and badminton. While she won the Long

Island Championship as captain of the basketball team and is a four-year starter in badminton, her true passion is soccer. She is an All-State goalie and holds the school record for shutouts. Samantha also shines in the classroom with an unweighted average of 96

(out of 100) and a 1960 SAT score. She looks forward to attending Lehigh University next fall where she will play soccer. After college, Samantha would like to become a member of the FBI.

Fifth-graders at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District put Goldilocks on trial on February 4th. Goldilocks was accused of trespassing at the Three Bears’ home, eating Papa Bear’s porridge and leftover chicken, stealing money (petty larceny), trying

on Mama Bear’s dresses and breaking a rocking chair (criminal mischief). Goldilocks went on trial against the plaintiffs, the Three Bears. As Goldilocks’ lawyers and the prosecution went toe to toe trying to prove their respective clients’ cases, other fairy tale characters were called

to testify as witnesses including the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Blind Mice, Chicken Little and more. After hearing all the facts in the case, the jury handed down a verdict and sentencing for Goldilocks, which varied from class to class.

The Suffolk County Legislature met this Tuesday for their first general meeting of the year in Hauppauge. Prior to the busy day of law making the Legislature had the distinct privilege of honors David Li, a High School Student from Commack who was selected as an Intel Semifinalist. Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented David Li with a proclamation before the legislature to recognize his hard work. David Li is no stranger to the Suffolk County Legislature having been honored last summer for his

“Wireless Tracking System for At-home Durable Medical Equipment during Natural Disasters.” Many patients are dependent on Life support systems that use electricity; during a natural disaster when the electricity goes out it is very important for these patients to get to a hospital or some designated place with electricity in order to run their life support system. David has developed a radio network that would alert hospitals and “patient refugee centers” when a patient has an outage, this system works without cell

phone or internet access. It was this same project that won David Li a spot as an Intel Semifinalist, which means he is one of only three-hundred students chosen to receive this distinction. “David is a bright student and I am honored to be able to present him with a proclamation, he is an exemplary student and I was happy to see him again this morning, I am confident he will go on to do wonderful work in the field of science and technology” said Leslie Kennedy

Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge) participated in the first ever Brooklyn Nets Scout Night on January 17th held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The NY Islanders game started out with the Boy Scouts serving as the Color Guard at the opening of the 4pm game against the Vancouver Cannucks. Prior to the event and the game, the scouts got a tour of the dressing room where the regular Color Guard changes and practices. “It was cool to be in areas and tour them, in places that we wouldn’t normally be,” explained Life Scout Paul Massa. In addition, the youths with their adult leaders were given a tour of the basement of the building, where the players were practicing before the game.

Troop 343 spent about half an hour in practice to be the Color Guard, where the three tallest scouts were selected to hold the American, Canadian, and Boy Scout Troop 343 flags. Nick Sicurelli was selected to hold the American flag and Matty Kalinsy held the Canadian flag in a vertical direction, while Paul Massa was holding the Boy Scout Troop 343’s flag tipped at a 45 degree angle (so that it was dipped lower than the country’s flags, following proper flag etiquette). During the opening ceremony, the Canadian anthem was sung, followed by the Star Spangled Banner, and the scouts saluted the American flag during the singing of the United States anthem. At the end of the flag presentations, there was a

special exit for all scouts to follow out the American ﬂag. “I didn’t expect it to be as cool as it was, a little bit nerve wracking knowing that approximately 10,000 people in the audience at the Barclay Center were watching all of us,” explained Scout Massa. The Troop 343 Boy Scouts who attended and presented the American Flag during the singing of the National Anthem were James Abruzzo, Kyle Adams, Kevin Caunter, Matty Kalinsky, Liam Maggio, Paul Massa, Chris Parrett, Scotty Peterson, Nicholas Sicurelli and Anthony Sicurelli. They were joined at the game by their parents, siblings, and adult scouting volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 343.

Welcome to St. James The establishment of the Reboli Center for Art and History at the old Capital One building in Stony Brook will provide the public with access to Joseph Reboli’s paintings and artifacts, as well as provide artistic and

historical programs for children and adults that will educate them about his art and its relationship to the history of the local community where he lived, worked and raised his family. Joseph Reboli was a

nationally acclaimed painter from the Three Village area who passed away in 2004. The Reboli Atelier is an extension of the Reboli Center for Art and History. The Reboli Atelier is located in the Flowerfield

complex, Building 2, Suites 6 and 9 in St. James. The school will offer classical art classes for children to adults and ranging from beginners to advanced artists. Classes will include figure painting and drawing, portraits,

still life, plein aire and specialty workshops. They will be taught by such noted and local artists as Christian White, Doug Reina and Jim Molloy, as well as other artists such as John Traynor and Melissa Imossi.
