$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.
When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all.

A Friendly Visit From Officer Allison
Accompsett Elementary School students recently had the opportunity to attend presentations provided by Officer Karl Allison from the Suffolk County Police Department Community Relations Bureau.
Officer Allison discussed
the many roles of a police officer, the dangers of bullying, vaping and cigarettes and also how to stay safe on the internet.
Accompsett Elementary School Principal Timothy Hellmuth says ““It is important that we give our students the tools they
need to safely navigate challenging situations that they may encounter later on in life.”
For some additional fun, Officer Allison joined the 5th grade students in the gymnasium for a game of Matball!
Pink Aid Long Island Celebrates Selection As A Stop & Shop Community Bag Program Beneficiary
Pinkaid.org been selected as a beneficiary of the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program for the month of February.
The Stop & Shop Community Bag Program is a reusable bag program that facilitates community support with the goal to make a difference in the communities where shoppers live and work.
Pinkaid.org was selected as the February beneficiary of the program by store leadership at the Stop& Shop located at 60 Wall Street in Huntington, NY. Pink Aid Long Island will receive a $1 donation every time the
$2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at this location during February.
Cold Spring Harbor High School Senior, Veronica Watkin, has been creating fundraisers, including lemonade stands and tennis tournaments, for Pink Aid, since she was in preschool. She registered Pink Aid for the program early in 2022 after learning about the opportunity through Stop and Shop’s corporate website. Veronica states “Buying a bag when you shop at Stop and Shop on Wall Street will help financially challenged men and women and their families, who have
been diagnosed with breast cancer, to receive support to keep their lights on and to put food on the table, gas in the car for therapy and provide the basic needs to survive.”
Pink Aid is a nonprofit which started in Connecticut and their chapter here on Long Island started in Huntington in 2013.
This year they celebrate their 10-year anniversary. Learn more by contacting pinkaid.org.

Long Island Elite Selects Paws Of War As 2023 Charity Partner
Long Island Elite, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local Long Island business professionals and emerging regional leaders, has announced they have selected Nesconsetbased Paws of War as its 2023 charity partner. The announcement came at Long Island Elite’s first meeting of the year at The Heritage Club in Farmingdale.
Paws of War is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to train and place service animals and companion dogs to support and provide independence to U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war. The non-profit also provides animal rescue for U.S. troops who have befriended an animal while serving overseas. The organization also serves
as a community center where veterans and first responders come together daily to build bonds and support each other.
The funds raised by Long Island Elite in 2023 will give Paws of War additional resources to further its mission of “helping both ends of the leash” by providing services to veterans, first responders and their service or companion animals. These activities will support the mental wellbeing of individuals in Paws of War programs, giving back to the heroes who have sacrificed so much for this country. Having service or companion animals has proven to be an effective way to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce veteran suicides. LIE volunteers and funds raised will also assist in rescuing dogs and cats and pairing them with local heroes in the community.
“This partnership
between Long Island Elite and Paws of War will enhance the lives of veterans and lead to numerous dogs find their forever homes. We will also raise awareness in our community about Paws of War’s important mission.
Our members will see first-hand the challenges that veterans and first responders face, especially those experiencing the effects of PTSD and the positive impact dogs and cats will provide. As a U.S. Marine veteran, I personally understand the challenges and hardships that our veterans and first responders face every day,” said Frank Morizio, Jr, Long Island Elite President.
During the partnership year, members of Long Island Elite will volunteer their time at Paws of War’s events where they will learn more about the organization, including the cost of training service

your community.
“Congratulations to all of those who have received Distinguished Youth Awards for bettering themselves and those around them. I am proud to have such outstanding youth in the Sixteenth Legislative District.”

animals, the challenges and issues related to abandoned and mistreated animals, animal adoption and rescue and the importance of veterans and first responders gathering to share their stories, comradery and mutual support.
Many veterans and first responders are struggling with PSTD and other mental health challenges. The support and funds that
LIE will provide to us will go toward improving the lives of these heroes and at the same time, find homes for so many dogs that need them,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War.
For over 20 years, Long Island Elite members have supported many not-forprofits. The organization has raised over $1 million dollars for charities and charity partners, including United Cerebral Palsy,
ACLD, SIBSPlace, The Safe Center LI, New Ground and Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center. LIE members’ efforts have positively impacted thousands of lives on Long Island.

The Charity of the Month for February is The
Corporate Source
Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?
A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.
As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.
As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”
Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and
a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”
TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.
Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.
TCS is hiring for multiple full and part time positions in the Su olk County area. They are looking for Janitors, Groundskeepers, Landscapers and Foreman. See their website, www. thecorporatesource.org, for career opportunities or call 561-419-5613 for more information.

PUPPY YOGA - Puppy yoga at Smithtown High School East. Photo courtesy of Smithtown CSD
Students at Smithtown High School East took the yoga pose “downward dog” to a whole new level on Feb. 1.
Courtesy of health and physical education teacher Helen Flynn, her lab/mix puppy Bella paid a visit for some “puppy yoga.”
“I figured this would be a great unit to bring to the kids,” said Ms. Flynn. “Yoga has many benefits, and with midterms finishing last week, I figured this
would be the perfect time to introduce my classes to some puppy yoga to help alleviate some of the stress of midterm week!”
The students found practicing yoga with puppies to be fun, joyful and downright adorable. Ms. Flynn added that puppy yoga classes can help students feel more positive about themselves, lower blood pressure and can also lower their stress levels.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Kick-Off Cookie Season
Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) is excited to announce that the Girl Scout Cookie Program is running now through April 17, 2023. For more than 100 years, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has allowed girls to develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills. All proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Season support local Girl Scouts by expanding their opportunities for new experiences and activities.
“Every Girl Scout that participates in our Girl Scout Cookie Program develops invaluable entrepreneurial experience while increasing their confidence from an early age,” said Tammy Severino, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County President and CEO. “This program allows girls to learn professional and financial
literacy skills while earning funds that will go directly to their troops and community to grant new opportunities.”
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girlled entrepreneurial program in the world and helps Girl Scouts reach goals that power endless opportunities and adventures. Within the program, girls can create a personalized page on the Digital Cookie platform— which allows girls to offer an online option to purchase cookies. Throughout the season, local troops and Girl Scouts will also be setting up in-person booth sales held across Suffolk County.
Booth Sales allow Girl Scouts to engage with their community while they gain early business experience and progress in leadership. Each booth is designed
and created by the girls in the troop, using their creativity and artistic ability to construct their unique booth. Girls gain experience managing inventory, handling customer transactions, creating displays, and much more.
Booth Sale season starts February 3rd. To find the nearest Booth Sale, visit the
Girl Scout Cookie Finder to support your local troop.

Long Island Author Brian Heinz Visits Tackan Elementary
Critically acclaimed children’s book author and Long Island native Brian Heinz spent Jan. 24 inspiring the minds of Tackan Elementary students.
Mr. Heinz, who has 20 published books to his credit, visited several classrooms to put on a “writer’s workshop.” He
spoke about the five critical elements of an opening page: character, principal verb, setting, sensory details and a problem. For “character,” Mr. Heinz suggested to provide a name of the main character. For “principal verb,” he said it was important to show the character in the midst of an action. “Setting” allows the
reader to fully visualize the story. “Sensory Details” are provided to immerse the reader in the scene. While “a problem” let’s the reader know something is not right in the character’s world. The students found the workshop very informative and look forward to using it in their writing.

Super Ears - Super Power!
Wood Park’s Speech and Language Department provided a lesson to first-grade students about hearing loss and assistive technologies. The students learned about “Super Ears” or the use of hearing aids. During the lessons, students engaged in interactive activities to learn about
varying levels of hearing loss, assistive technologies and ways to become better communicators and friends to all. The goal of this program is to promote awareness of different abilities, embrace differences and encourage acceptance of others for what makes them unique. Commack is
passionate about educating students, staff and families about communication differences. This program is a continuation of our inclusivity project that began with the addition of the AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) Core Board to our playground last school year.
