Heading to LI Championship The FIRST® Tech Challenge season – dubbed FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm) – will culminate this weekend with the SBPLI Long Island Championship tournament. Presented locally by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), FIRST® Tech Challenge inspires students age 12 to 18 to pursue an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Twenty-four teams (noted below) from across Long Island will compete in the event at Smithtown

FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world were asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponent-colored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” During the FIRST Tech Challenge events, students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Teams work to score

large number of additional activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 1/2 foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and many classes provide valuable information. Exhibitors include schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, and college planning. Some of the many classes that children can share with their parents and

grandparents are drama, robots and a Boomers! Birthday Bash. Ganimet Brija of Coram, who attended the event in 2017, enthusiastically shared “My son had a blast, and everyone was so helpful and friendly.” Noshina Amhad of Valley Stream added, “I really love this event…already waiting for [the] next event.” Attendees who like to “pay forward” to charitable groups are encouraged to bring used and new books and money for donation to The Book Fairies, who will share them with children in need. Those who do will receive raffle tickets to win a variety of donated prizes. Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meetand-greet. The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a

High School West on Sunday, February 11th. The participating teams earned the opportunity to compete during one of five regional qualifying tournaments that took place at Lynbrook, Center Moriches and Sewanhaka High Schools throughout the month of January. Working alongside adult mentors, more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries have spent the last several months designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season,

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. This analysis is based on expected weekly attendance of over 200,000 people, which include players, fans, volunteers, vendors and media. There will also be approximately 8,000 hotel rooms booked along with an average of 3,500 temporary job opportunities, with many more to be unveiled in the coming months ahead. The

championship is expected to be viewed by more than 80 million people in over 150 countries, creating additional tourism exposure for Suffolk County. Even before half the adults in America had their information stolen from a major credit-reporting agency, there were about 178 million personal records exposed in 2015 and it’s estimated that number rose to more than 200 million in 2016. The technology you use every day—computers at work or home, printers and your mobile phone— needs to be protected. By 2020 there are projected to be 20.8 billion Internetconnected things—and they’ll all need protection. Fortunately, however, you can go a long way toward protecting your data with seven simple steps. 1. Back up all critical data saved on your personal machines.

2. Keep dynamic and different passwords across applications; consider using a password manager. 3. Be very diligent whenever clicking on a link or attachment in any e-mail—don’t get phished. 4. Be very cautious about entering data into a pop-up window. 5. Review your privacy settings on all social media tools. 6. Shred your bills, medical records and the like before discarding them. You can also have them shredded at a trusted retailer such as Staples. 7. Get your electronic devices professionally reviewed and updated. Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School came together to support its Parent-Teacher Association while having fun and staying healthy on February 1st by participating in a Boosterthon Fun Run.

In an effort to raise money for the PTA’s Cultural Arts program, students garnered pledges and sponsors from family members and friends for each lap they ran. In total, Dogwood Elementary School raised more than

During the Matinecock District (BSA)’s monthly Roundtable meeting held at Burr Intermediate School in Commack on January 11th, Edie Pulizzotto (Asst. Ms. Pulizzotto is one of the first volunteer scouting leaders (and the first in Suffolk County Council BSA) to be recognized with this award for her service to scouts with disabilities or special needs. Brian Morse (an Assistant Council Commissioner and the previous Special Needs Commissioner for Suffolk County Council BSA) designed this award and Suffolk County Council petitioned National Boy Scouts of America to make it a national award. The Special Needs Scouting Service Award was established to provide clear and visible recognition to adults, volunteer and professional, who serve the community of members with disabilities/special needs of the Scouting movement. This award is

earned by direct action on behalf of members with disabilities/special needs and by spreading the ideals of inclusiveness, diversity, and disability awareness in Scouting. The award is intended to create enhanced visibility of the resources available to serve these members and to ensure their success in Scouting. Serving as the Assistant District Commissioner for the Roundtable for Matinecock District for three years and a Commissioner for five years, Ms. Pulizzotto has been a member of the Huntington School District’s SEPTA (Special Education PTA) for many years as well as serving on their board for 3 years. She explained, “I have used the RT forum to encourage leaders to take special needs youths into their Cub Scout Packs or Boy Scout units and have done this via speakers to general discussions. Our Pack had boys with special needs in it as does our Troop. Again, I have encouraged our unit leaders to get in touch with their SEPTA’s to seek out additional information on working with the special needs population and to

see how to include their kids into our program.” Said Ms. Pulizzotto, “I am truly touched and honored to receive this award, especially as it was presetned to me by the founder of the award itself. Brian Morse has worked tirelessly for the Special Needs Scouts.” Mr. Morse explained that “Edie Pulizzoto was instrumental in connecting me with the FDR Division and Lauren Vlachos. PULLING THEIR WEIGHT - Even during the winter months, Smithtown Elementary School physical education teacher Kurt Margraf knows how to get students to stay active. As part of his weekly before school sports program, Margraf is teaching his students about the Iditarod sled dog race. The two-week race takes place annually each March in Alaska. Fourth-graders were taught facts about the race, and necessary clothes they need to wear before trying to mimic the race by pulling one another on sleds. Jake Nieto, a senior at Commack High School, just had his second scientific research paper published, a very rare accomplishment for someone at any age. His research and manuscripts “laid the foundation for other students to continue Jake’s work,” said his mentor Dr. Prakash Narayan, Vice President of Preclinical Research & C.O.O. at Angion Biomedica Corp. Jake’s latest paper, titled, “A Modified Elliptical Formula to Estimate Kidney Collagen Content in a Model of Chronic Kidney Disease,” is “An important contribution to science and medicine” said Dr. Narayan. “His formula will most likely lead to a decrease in the need for painful kidney biopsies.” Through the high school’s mentoring network, Jake teamed up with Dr. Narayan in the summer of 2016 to

work on two projects relating to kidney disease. “Jake is a precocious young man, who brought exceptionally strong skills in applied mathematics, advanced biophysics, and deep data analysis.” Jake’s work during that summer resulted in two peer-reviewed first author publications. The first one published in 2016 describes a formula for estimating the amount of cysts in a model of polycystic kidney disease. The second publication (in January 2018 describes a novel method to evaluate the amount of scarring in kidneys based off just two linear measurements. The salient features of this second body of work are a modification of the commonly used elliptical formula to estimate renal dimensions and potentially, in the future, reduction in the number of painful and sometimes risky biopsies performed

to determine the amount of scar tissue in the kidney. Each summer, Angion, a small business biotech engaged in developing therapeutics in areas of unmet medical needs such as kidney and liver disease, opens its doors to interested STEM students from Long Island, New York City, and New Jersey. The students spend about two months getting handson experience with basic and applied biomedical research conducting experiments, testing hypotheses, gathering and analyzing data while sharpening their presentation skills with the help of one of Angion’s principal investigators in a state-of-the-art research facility. Jake spent last summer studying the biochemical processes of THC through the Simons Science Research Program at Stony Brook University, and credits his interest in physics and engineering to his grandparents. “He loves to solve problems, and his quest for answers drives him,” said science teacher and mentor Richard Kurtz. Jake has many other interests besides science and math. He competes on the school’s Science Olympiad and Mock Trial teams, is president of the Spanish Honor Society and the Science Honor Society, and is vice president of the Gardening Club. Jake is also a musician, and a tutor. He has not made a final decision on which university he will attend next year, but plans to study physics and engineering.
