Collaborative Effort

nder the direction of Art teacher Erica Lewis, fifthgrade students at Smithtown Elementary School created a school art exhibit titled Leaders Of Peace. Striving for detail and consistency, students honed their illustrative coloring skills in a collaborative graphic portrait of leaders for freedom and civil responsibility. According to Lewis, student-artists learned the reprographic technique of using dots to simulate tonal imagery.

Souper Bowl Of Caring Students in the Mills Pond Elementary School Cares Club organized the school’s annual “Soup-er Bowl” food drive, collecting just under 1,400 cans of food that were donated to Long Island Cares Food Bank.

Soup-er Bowl is a national effort to capitalize on the hype created around the NFL’s Super Bowl as a time to mobilize youth to fight hunger in their local communities. Mills Pond’s Cares Club, a group of fourth-graders

dedicated to activities that benefit charitable causes, donated, collected and assembled the food over several weeks. Diana Lanze, Kristin Quail and Melissa Taylor are the club’s advisers.

String Performers String students from the Port Jefferson School District were selected to participate at the Long Island String Festival on January 17th at Smithtown High School West and on February 1st at Ward Melville High School. All of the students were selected on a competitive

basis with NYSSMA scores as the main criteria, along with teacher recommendations. The district extends its congratulations to the following students: Kasumi Layne-Stasik (grade 5), Jack Reilly (grade 6), Grant Samara (grade 6), Lucas Welinder (grade 6),

Blood Donations Needed

our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

Certified Kind All students at Commack Middle School were invited to participate in the Great Kindness Challenge, which celebrated a week of kind acts from January 26th-January 30th. The Great Kindness Challenge is presented by Kids for Peace, in a global effort devoted to perform as many acts of kindness from a checklist of 50 kind deeds. More than two million children in 45 countries participated this year. Commack students were encouraged to complete all 50 to “rock the school with kindness.” The school was awarded

a seal to proudly display (above) as a “Kindness Certified School.” A panel of CMS faculty and students, all members of the schools Social Emotional Development and Learning Committee, were instrumental in making preparations for this building-wide event. They also helped to host “Kindness Stations” during all lunch periods, where students created kind messages to present to the middle school community. A bulletin board outside of the cafeterias highlighted student made messages of kindness, including, “Be-

YOU-tiful,” “You Matter,” and, “No matter how hard life gets, always have hope.” Although the weather that week was cold and snowy, the warm acts of kindness were seen and felt throughout the building. Nurses received thank -you notes on Band-Aids, quotes of kindness filled the air during homeroom announcements, and students wrote notes of appreciation to their friends, teachers, and administrators. Cafeteria workers and main office staff proudly displayed the messages of kindness they received for all to see.

It may be cold here, but that didn’t stop youngsters at Tackan Elementary School from appreciating life in the tropics. Third-graders recently visited the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, participating in “The Treasure of the Tropical Rainforest”

program. Students discovered the diversity of life in the rainforest and learned to appreciate the wonders of this ancient ecosystem. They also walked through a mock rainforest, met live animals and took a visual journey through the life of the rainforest in its layers:

During these assemblies and meetings, students have the opportunity to review the Peaceful School Bus rules, get to know their fellow students in their bus groups, learn more about their bus driver, review appropriate bus behaviors and discuss what they see happening on their bus on a day-to-day basis. “The Peaceful School Bus program provides our students with a forum to be an active and integral part of the effort to create positive, peaceful bus experiences,” described Pines Elementary School Principal Dr. Claudine DiMuzio. “The students are given an opportunity to have their voices be heard and their ideas put into action!”

Hauppauge School District launched the Peaceful School Bus Program at its Forest Brook and Pines Elementary Schools in fall 2012. King instituted a mastery model in his current physics classroom that is modified to allow for self-pacing within a unit of instruction. Mr. King is also a coach for our Science Olympiad team, he is a Senior Class Advisor, the coach for our Science Quiz Bowl Team, and the coach of our Physics Olympics team. Jeanne Suttie is in her fifteenth year at Commack Middle School, teaching Regents Living Environment and the STEM elective. She has pioneered the work in the STEM class,

collaborating with the technology department, to create the most popular elective at the middle school. Pines Elementary School 3rd graders sent 100 care packages to U.S. troops stationed in Africa. The students chose to send the care packages to Africa because Pines third grade student Nick LaFamina’s father is stationed there. “I am very excited because my dad will get packages from my 3rd grade for himself and to give out to the other people that he is with,” said LaFamina. They are risking their lives for us and helping us, so we should help them.”
