Volunteers Needed from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Investigating Electrons

Hauppauge High School students in Carolyn Heck’s AP Chemistry and Dennis Petercsak’s AP Physics C classes recently were invited to perform laboratory investigations at Stony Brook University (SBU). The AP Chemistry students completed a five-hour, college level lab in which copper was

transformed into different compounds with various color changes before ultimately returning back to solid copper. According to their teacher, “this laboratory investigation was directly correlated to the AP Chemistry Curriculum and will aid the students in their preparation for the AP Chemistry exam.”

The AP Physics C students worked with the SBU’s high-tech equipment to calculate the mass of an electron. The Physics students also had an opportunity to tour the tandem Van de Graaff accelerator, which is located in Stony Brook University’s Physics Building.

The cards will be distributed to Memory Care residents during dressed up as “Star Wars” their annual Valentine’s Day party, which will be held on February 11th. characters and performed for Mills Pond Elementary School students. Their performance helped illustrate the excitement of reading and how books can awaken an imagination.

As a culminating activity for their unit on Arctic animals and penguins, kindergartners at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District rotated through different Arctic centers on January 27th. The different activities helped reinforce lessons learned during the unit. Students went ice fishing for the number of fish labeled on their bins. to predict the number of cotton balls that would cover their polar bear and then cover their polar bear with cotton and compare their predictions. During model magic, they used their artistic skills to sculpt an arctic animal of their choice, such as a snowy owl, walrus, polar bear, arctic fox or penguin. In the drenched and dry station, kindergartners used a crayon to color a penguin and then added water to show how a penguinâ€™s feathers keep it warm and dry. They recorded their observations on a lab sheet.

Hauppauge Middle School recently dazzled audiences, young and old, with an outstanding production of Seussical the Musical. The play weaves together Dr. Seuss’ famous tales and characters in the most unexpected of ways, incorporating storylines from 16 of his beloved books. Throughout the course of the production, some characters fall in love, some go on wild adventures, some save the world – traveling everywhere from the Jungle of Nool to McElligot’s Pool to do so! With Dr. Seuss’s

unique lexicon – and hundreds upon hundreds of wondrous creations – the play conveys all the important messages Dr. Seuss felt strongly about. He believed in helping friends in need, in not giving up, in valuing those around you, in the power of imagination, in preserving the sweetness of the natural world, and most importantly, in working toward peace and harmony at all costs. “Putting on a show is the ultimate learning experience. I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District is not only using technology, but teaching students how technology works. The TECHKNOW Kids Team, made up of 45 fifthgraders, is a new club that gives students the opportunity to explore the more technical side of technology.

The club teaches students how to operate, troubleshoot and maintain the many devices the school district has to offer. Working as a team, the TECHKNOW Kids actively support the technology needs of the school’s faculty and students. Their next big project includes presenting Accompsett’s third-grade
