Riding for the sixth year, the Marty Lyons Foundation is calling for 60 cyclists to participate as a team in the Annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 6th, 2018. This, America’s largest cycling event, is celebrating its 41st year, and is presented by REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.). There are 32,000 riders expected to pedal the 40-mile, oneday scenic tour through the five boroughs of New York City on car free roads. Sixty cyclists will be riding for the benefit of the Marty Lyons Foundation with a goal of raising $200,000 toward the mission of granting wishes to children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. As a Charity Rider, each member of the MLF Team will be in the first wave of riders that morning and
will also receive a Rider I.D. Kit which includes a helmet cover, bib and bike plate; access to free bike repair along the route and a support and gear vehicle; a Marty Lyons Foundation jersey (if registered by February 10th); snacks and refreshments at four rest areas; entry to Finish Festival at Fort Wadsworth and more. The Tour, co-produced by Bike New York and the New York City Department of Transportation, provides participants the unique and fun experience to bike on a 40-mile journey through New York City. “Because the route is doable for cyclists of almost all levels,” says Marty, “I encourage anyone looking for a great time to join our team in support of our children.” The Marty Lyons
Foundation grants wishes to children, ages 3 through 17 years old, who have been diagnosed with a terminal or a life-threatening illness. Founded in 1982 by football great Marty Lyons, the Foundation has granted wishes to over 7,400 boys and girls, many of whom reside in the tristate area. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we
see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken
them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

Long Island Fight for Charity, the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2018 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 300 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer. If you ever wanted to do something different and challenge yourself this is the year to make the commitment. The LIFFC 15th Main Event to be held on Monday, November 19th, 2018 will feature 10 or more bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization’s fund, raising goals that benefit local charities, intensive physical training and participation in promotional activities and media interviews. McKay announced the innovative program with wing leadership last fall at a dedication ceremony for a Veterans Plaza at the college’s Eastern Campus honoring Suffolk County Community College student and Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Louis Bonacasa, 31, killed in action in December of 2015 while serving in Afghanistan as a security forces defender. “Suffolk County Community College is committed to assisting our military by helping them achieve their educational and personal goals. In the process, we know we are fulfilling our community mission as well as helping to produce a new generation of lifelong learners equipped with the skills they can utilize both during their careers and long after," said College President Dr. Shaun L. Suffolk County Community College will offer courses at Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard base, home of the 106th Rescue Wing, located in Westhampton Beach this spring. A first for the 106th Rescue Wing and the college. Suffolk County Community College will offer two courses this spring that will enable Air National Guard members to gain credits towards an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). The CCAF degree is mandatory for higher level promotions. Psychology 101 begins on February 1 and English 101 follows on February 6th. The 106th Rescue Wing Command Chief, Michael T. HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND
“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!
There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. Human Connection A project created at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District is showing how each member of its student body is special and unique. The Humans of AMS project aligns with the district’s social-emotional learning standards and is designed to show off the diverse experiences of the student population. To start, Accompsett students write a few paragraphs featuring little-known facts about
themselves. After their picture is taken, they get a sign featuring their photo and personal information paragraph. The signs are then hung around the library, hallways and cafeteria in an effort to learn about each other. Students also create short video segments about themselves. In addition, there’s a social media portion of the project on Instagram with its own account called Humans of AMS.
“The overall goal is to teach the students acceptance of others,” said Accompsett Middle School Principal Paul McNeil. “This is a difficult goal to measure, but it is our hope that the students will come together to respect the differences of others.” So far, 55 students have participated in the project, which will be ongoing throughout the school year.

Volunteer Orientation Westy Self Storage in East Northport proudly hosted General Needs Ltd New Volunteer KickOff & Orientation Event. General Needs Ltd is a nonprofit organization that provides basic necessities to the 5,000+ homeless Long Island Veterans and their families. The well attended event provided much information on the group’s vast services. The Executive Board was present to greet everyone and answer any questions. The General Needs Committees, ranging from Financial, Distribution, Fundraising, Grants, Legal, Publicity, Purchasing, Speakers, Volunteers and Warehouse, were also on hand to describe their roles and offer support
and services. There was a detailed presentation given by Lonnie Sherman, President, General Needs outlining their mission, history and growth. There was also a recap of their outstanding 2017 efforts: 3,832 “Distributions with Dignity,” 1,241 meals served and 26 beds and household “kits” dispersed. “We are deeply grateful for Westy’s support and all that they continue to do for us. Thanks in part to Westy, we had a very successful evening with many new members joining our group.” said Lonnie Sherman, President, General Needs Ltd. “It’s hard for many people to imagine living without the everyday necessities. Our veterans deserve more. Help us to help
those who have served our great nation,” continued Lonnie. It’s never too late to get involved. General Needs appreciates every volunteer for their unique skill set, availability and commitment to the efforts to support the homeless veterans and veterans in need in our local communities. Fifth-graders at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently enjoyed a special “dining” experience at the library’s bistro book tasting.
After confirming their reservation, students were seated at tables with checkered tablecloths, vases of colorful flowers, flickering candles and trays full of books. Each student was able to “taste” different
books for each course: appetizer, entree and dessert. The fifth-graders recorded their thoughts about each course in their menus as Italian music filled the air.

Sheriff Visits
Camaraderie is non-existent on our planet, and distrust and failure are in view. I think we’ve lost our way in our values; we don’t love each other like we used to do. Left to right now has a different angle; nothing is straight anymore, and we’re caught in the middle of what is and what was, and the way our children are now being taught.
Blindness, dark and dreary days now; rosy glasses won’t help us see the light. If we don’t stop this madness now, then it will be too late to set things right.
It was a first for Commack Middle School when newly elected Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. came to town. Thanks to his friendship with a Commack family, the Catuoscos, whose son showed his social studies teacher a coin from the Sheriff’s inauguration, the wheels were set in motion for this special visit. Sheriff Toulon met with Commack Middle School teacher Christine Mankes’ social studies classes on
January 25. He explained the responsibilities of the Sheriff’s office, and talked about his 53 day campaign when the person originally running for office bowed out. He impressed upon the students the importance of helping others and making the right choices. Sheriff Toulon told them to “Protect each other and let someone know if there’s something wrong.” He expressed his concerns about opioids and bullying, and vowed to keep people
safe in their schools and in their neighborhoods. The Sheriff answered all the student and staff’s questions in a personable and friendly way, and plans to visit middle schools throughout the county during his four year term. Thanks to Sheriff Toulon and Deputy Sheriff Rich Tedesco for taking time out of their busy schedules to speak frankly to our teens and pre-teens.

Two Commack High School students, Daniel Lee and Anoop Singh, are among 300 high school seniors named as scholars (semifinalists) in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search. Daniel and Anoop’s projects were chosen from 1,818 applicants from high schools across the nation, Puerto Rico, and internationally. The competition is sponsored by the Society for Science & The Public, formerly sponsored by Intel. Anoop’s project is titled, “A Multilinear Approach to Forecasting the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO).” Anoop’s work combines nonlinear, chaotic and linear modelling approaches in four climate systems
to accurately predict the ENSO phenomenon. Understanding ENSO is a critical resource in the effort to deal with climate change, and his efficient procedure could potentially be used to predict all ENSO seasons up to one year in advance. Daniel’s project is titled, “Sensor Network-based Wind Field Estimation using Deep Learning.” Forecasting of solar irradiance is significant for planning the operations of power plants which convert renewable energies into electricity. Daniel’s study focuses on improving short-term irradiance predictions by utilizing wind field information that commonly includes wind speed and direction. He developed a robust sensor
network-based prediction model which takes into account various factors such as topology of sensor placement, wind speeds, cloud cover moving rates, and the number of irradiance sensors deployed. “We are extremely proud of these two young men and our team of educators,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Donald James. “It takes a colossal amount of dedication, effort, and time to complete the research and prepare their projects for such a rigorous competition. These young science researchers are shaping the future.” Each scholar receives a $2,000 cash prize, and the high school will also receive an equal amount.

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recently congratulated Joshua Witt of Boy Scout Troop 125 for achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout. He is also the fourth scout on his street to become an Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout Project, Josh designed and constructed four picnic

Bag Fee Donation Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta and Charlie Reichert, owner of several Suffolk County IGA markets announced that Mr. Riechert will donate the five cent bag fee from his Fort Salonga and East Northport IGAs to Huntington Hospital. In addition, the bag fee collected at his Greenport and Southold stores will go to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. “This idea came to me when people were complaining about charging a nickel for a plastic bag and that the money was going back to the retailer. I asked what they thought if the money went to a local charity and everyone liked the idea so that is what I am doing,” said Charlie Reichert, owner of five IGA stores. “As a local businessman, I think it is so important to give back
to the community where you do business,” added Mr. Reichert. According to Mr. Reichert, “Instead of a retailer, like me, keeping the bag fee, it is my contention that we should donate it to a worthwhile organization that provides programs and services that benefit the residents of Suffolk County.” “This is a terrific program and I encourage other retailers to donate the five cent bag fee to a local charity or community program,” said Legislator Trotta who represents the district where the Reicherts live and where two of his stores are located. “I have known Charlie and his family for a long time and I applaud him for coming up with this idea as he is known for always giving back to the communities where his stores are located,” added Trotta.
“I am reaching out to Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, Ace Hardware and other stores to see it they will support local charities with their bag fee. Furthermore, if a member of the community has a serious illness than a fund like this might help the family,” said Legislator Trotta. “I think businesses can better spend the money than government and I don’t want government officials sticking their hands into this money. I have no faith in the way county government would spend this money. In my four years as a Legislator, I have seen enough wasteful spending for a lifetime,” stated Trotta. Legislator Trotta and Charlie Reichert hope that other retailers will join in this endeavor and support their local charities and/or institutions.
Goldilocks on Trial Fifth-graders at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District put Goldilocks on trial for the crimes of criminal mischief, trespassing and petty larceny on January 29th. More than a dozen witnesses were called to the stand to testify about what they saw happen at the home of the Three Little Bears. Learning about the
workings of the legal system, students played the part of the defense and prosecution, while the fourth-grade classes and teachers served as the jury and judge for the case. The courtroom was filled with popular storybook characters who testified about their whereabouts on the day Goldilocks was charged with entering the Three Little Bears’ house, eating
their porridge, breaking a chair, rummaging through Mama Bear’s clothes and stealing $100. Characters such as Chicken Little, the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Blind Mice and the Wise Owl – as well as Goldilocks’ parents and cousin Dreadlocks – were all called to the stand. The ninth annual “Souper Bowl” at North Ridge Primary School in Commack was a huge success! The children collected a whopping total of 7,188 cans and bags of soup. The soup was donated to Long Island Cares,
which is Long Island’s First Food Bank and one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger action organizations. Long Island Cares serves individuals and families in need, and much of their success is due to the support they receive from people like the children that attend North Ridge Primary School.

Grant Program Call for Entries WHAT: TangerKIDS Grant Program, an initiative designed to award grant money to schools within the communities of Tanger Outlet Centers nationwide, has officially opened its call for entries within the Deer Park, NY community. The TangerKIDS Grant Program was designed to satisfy the specific funding needs of local schools – from the implementation
of school-wide programs, to rebuilding equipment and academic materials inventories, to supporting athletic or band programs. In 2017, Tanger awarded 1,034 individual grants to schools in need.
