Valentines Traditions From Around The World Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the
anniversary of his death. Warm Catholic Hearts Provide Handmade Blankets Department of Education’s ‘Faith in the Public Square’ Initiative Benefits Patients in Catholic Health Services Cancer Care Centers Wednesday, January 29th, Hicksville – As an outward expression of their faith, members of the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic school community coordinated a winter-themed service project to benefit patients in Catholic Health Services cancer care facilities. The project, done by faculty staff, students, Girl Scouts and parents completed and donated over 150 handmade blankets to a team from Catholic Health Services at a ceremony at the Department of Education’s Hicksville offices on Wednesday. The blankets will be used to help keep cancer patients warm and comfortable at various CHS facilities across Long Island. “We hope that the warmth of the blankets, and the prayers and warm wishes of these beautiful school communities brings comfort to all who are suffering.” Said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. On hand at the ceremony representing the schools were Kathy Moran, principal of Holy
Trinity High School with some students, and Maryalice Doherty, principal of Holy Family School along with some of her elementary students. The team from Catholic Health Services included Joseph Lanzetta, Director of Planning and Community Health, Barbara Gibbons, Chief Nursing Officer CHS/ SJH & MMC; Maggie Glier, Nursing Director, Nursing Services, Megan Clark,
Nursing Manager, Cancer Care, and Jeanie Colamussi, RN Navigator. ‘The partnership between Catholic Health Services and Long Island’s Catholic schools enhances what each of us can do for our respective communities.” Said CHS’ Lanzetta. “Today however we are grateful to be the vehicle that delivers these gifts of compassion to provide additional comfort to those battling cancer.”

Smithtown High School East’s Drama and Stage Crew Club students attended the New York State Theatre Education Association’s annual conference in Callicoon, New York. The students participated in the largest conference in NYSTEA history by attending various workshops including technical theater and design, improvisation, acting, stage management and direction, voice and speech, playwriting, Shakespeare and historical theater, dance, theater business and society and audition techniques. In an effort to help the animals affected by the brushfires in Australia, the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District, along with the other FCCLA clubs in the district, sewed joey pouches for the injured and displaced baby kangaroos. France Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic
matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds. Italy Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans.
One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called “Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. The action suggests the couple will be together forever.

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.
Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

Four Eagles Taking Flight The Boy Scouts of America, Troop #349 of Smithtown, welcomed four new Eagle Scouts, having completed the requirements to attain the rank of Eagle Scout at the Cleary School for the Deaf, Nesconset, NY. Matthew Yopp completed the rank of Eagle, constructing a fence surrounding the park entrances at Commerdinger Park in Lake Ronkonkoma along with landscaping and clean-up of the area.
Eagle Anthony D’Amore constructed benches and landscaped the meditation garden at Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson. Christopher Michael Mitchell added new landscaping to the garden area surrounding the Parish of the Holy Cross Church in Nesconset. Matthew Pickow created a serenity garden with a retaining wall, plants and benches by the pet cemetery for the Little Shelter in
Huntington. Legislator Leslie Kennedy, along with other officials were honored to present each new Eagle Scout with a Proclamation highlighting each of their achievements, “to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout exemplifies the development of leadership, self- reliance and other qualities so sought after by young men, these three new Eagle Scouts exemplify such character”, said Kennedy.

Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter. Keep your pet warm.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, pets with thick or long hair tend to be more tolerant towards cold weather. If you bring your long-haired pup to the groomer during the winter, consider a simple trim rather than shaving their hair. Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to insulate
their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy a sweater or coat to help them stay warm. Protect their paws from de-icing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or pawprotectant on their paw pads to help prevent any
redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time outdoors. The American Kennel Club says that like humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold
weather spurts. Emergency preparedness for your pets. Power outages are common during winter-related disasters and can be a threat to you and your pet if the weather becomes severe, says AVMA. Create an emergency kit for your pet in the event of a winter storm or disaster that can lead to a power outage. The emergency
kit should include seven days’ worth of water and food per pet, paper towels, waste baggies, blankets, toys and a flashlight with extra batteries. Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!
