To all you high school students out there: we did it! The school year is officially half over. Midterms are done, and the third quarter has begun. As we are in the home stretch, it is crucial for students of every grade level to start - or finish - looking at colleges. Freshmen, although still young, should focus on maintaining a solid grade-point-average. Sophomores should be preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Juniors need to be primarily concerned with creating a list of schools that they wish to apply to. Seniors, like myself, are now waiting to hear back from different colleges.

Although underclassmen may feel like they have all the time in the world, it is crucial to get an early start. Trust me, that time goes quickly. In addition to keeping up one’s grades, it is also important to set up interviews. For many borderline students, these interviews give them the opportunity to convey their passions more effectively. A student gets to speak directly with an alumnus of the specific institution. An interview is a valuable asset in making your interest known. For instance, just a few weeks ago, I had an interview with Dr. Vitagliano, the proprietor of Smile With Style

Orthodontics in West Islip. As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Vitagliano is still heavily involved in the happenings both on campus and in the admissions office. During my interview, I made it known that Duke University was one of my first choice institutions. Hopefully, Dr. Vitagliano saw my interest and conveys it to the admissions board. This process can be inﬂuential in affording a student access to a specific institution of higher learning, but grades bear much more weight! Make sure to keep your grades up, take standardized tests, apply to college and schedule an interview!

The Eve Of Excitement? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what? Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy. Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,

don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching

the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

Hauppauge High School students recently lived and attended classes at the Gymnasium Neu Wulmstorf in Germany for the School’s annual German Student Exchange Program. Each fall, Hauppauge students visit Germany, and then the Hauppauge community hosts the German exchange students in the spring.

Launched in 1976, Hauppauge’s German Student Exchange Program is thought to be the longest same-school to same-school partnership in the National Association of Secondary Schools Principals (NASSP)/ German American Partnership Program (GAPP). “In our increasingly

global world, the German Student Exchange Program offers our young adults an invaluable opportunity to expand their global horizons through firsthand immersion in the daily life and culture of another country,” stated Lillian Carey, director of Languages Other than English and Integration of Instructional Technology. Kings Park and AnneMarie Lowry of St. James celebrated 40 years, Linda Schombs (Kings Park) 30 years, and Patricia Corradengo (North Babylon), Deborah Ellis (Brentwood) and Charlene Zimmer (East Northport) were recognized for being at St. Johnland for 25 years. Also honored were four retirees: Diane Bosco of Lake Grove, Arlene March of Levittown, Joyce Reyes of St. James and Sharon Rogers of Mastic. In addition, 36 other

employees were awarded pins and certificates for their service to the residents of St. Johnland. Seventy-two percent of all employees have been at St. Johnland for at least five years and 28% more than ten years. St. Johnland provides skilled nursing care with specialties in head injury rehabilitation and Alzheimer’s/dementia care and subacute care. They also provide home health care and adult day care.

In assembly line fashion, four Commack classes joined forces to make lunches for the homeless. North Ridge Primary School students in Mrs. Nichols, Mrs. Sandak, Mrs. Povey, and Mrs. Krug’s classes filled lunch gift bags with “hearty” food for the homeless as part

of their monthly Service Learner program. The lunches were delivered to a local church that is part of the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI), which hosts homeless men each night in the winter. The children made the sandwiches and

Service Learning Initiative added snacks,homemade cookies, and water to the gift bags. A representative from HIHI came to Commack to visit and thank the children for all their helpful efforts and said, “All the men were so happy and asked me to say Gracias!”

The Pre-K Program will be located at the Whiporwil School, 495 Hoffman Lane, Hauppauge, NY 11788. A third grade student at Burr Intermediate School in Commack, Vincent Baldi, suffers from Dystonia, a painful neurological movement disorder, in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. According to his teachers, “Vincent is an inspiration.” In the fall Vincent’s teachers organized a Thanksgiving pie fundraiser and partnered with Copenhagen Bakery in Northport to support Vincent and his family

with their battle. The fundraiser afforded Vincent some assistive technology for use at home. The staff at Copenhagen bakery went the extra mile, and have shown the Commack community that they are more than just an outstanding local bakery. The bakery anonymously adopted Vincent through the holiday season. Its collection was in addition to the initial fundraiser and quite a surprise. Vincent and the staff at Copenhagen recently met Vincent and his

family. Vincent presented a certificate from Burr School, signed by Principal, Rhonda Pratt, to the staff at Copenhagen acknowledging their kindness. The Baldi family continues to struggle to find answers for Vincent’s condition, but is constantly grateful for the support they have received from everyone in the community. This was certainly a sweet act of kindness for a sweet young man.

Students who are enrolled in the business course Introduction to Financial Management - a personal finance class take a test at the end of the course, which tests their knowledge in the areas of money management, banking, budgeting, credit, identity theft, insurance and investing. This award indicates that they have met the New York State Standards based on the Economics, the Enterprise System, and the Finance curriculum of the New York State

Education Department. Over 10,000 students took this certification test nationally. Smithtown classes scored well above the national average. Two and half percent of the group score in the scholar range of 96 or better and half of percent score a perfect score nationally. Smithtown students were well above the national average. Twenty-five percent of the class scored financial scholar status of 95 or better. These students will be honored in June at a

ceremony at the Museum of Financial History on Wall Street in June and at the Business Awards Ceremony on May 21st.
