Career Exploration It’s never too early to start thinking about colleges and careers. To that end, Hauppauge School District’s Middle and Elementary School students recently had an opportunity to learn about different colleges and to explore numerous career paths during College and Careers Week. More than 70 5th grade students at Bretton Woods Elementary School volunteered to be career ambassadors and to present special library research projects on careers to their fellow kindergarten through 4th grade students. Some of the professions the career ambassadors explored included a surgeon, veterinarian, dancer, carpenter, farmer, chef, CSI, marine biologist, astronaut and many others. Some students even dressed the part in uniforms required for specific careers, while others created elaborate display boards depicting the responsibilities of their dream jobs. A Dress for Success Day, College Exploration Day and Career Fair Day also were some of the activities presented as part of Bretton Woods, Forest Brook and the Pines Elementary School’s College and Career Week activities. In the months leading up to College and Careers Week,
Hauppauge Middle School 8th grade students were given the opportunity to select careers that matched their interests and abilities. Speakers from each profession were solicited from the community to present to small groups of students about their careers. This year, more than 30 community members volunteered their time to
participate in Career Day. This allowed for a great variety of careers to be presented, giving the 8th graders an opportunity to learn about the careers they were most interested in. Each group additionally was comprised
of under 20 students to facilitate an ease of interaction between the speakers and the students. Career Day kicked off with all of the eighth graders meeting in the auditorium to review their instructions for the day. The students were encouraged to use a list of suggested questions for the speakers. They then rotated through four, 25-minute sessions where they heard from three career speakers and one college panel. The college panels consisted of a college representative, a college student and a high school senior who is engaged in the college selection/ application process. The panel helped the students understand how they could maximize their up-coming high school experience to best prepare themselves for the college selection process. Students were required to turn in reflection assignment about what they learned on Career Day. All of the students selected one career from the presentations and explained why they believe they could be successful in that profession. “Overall, Career Day ran very smoothly. All of the presenters were highly informative, and the students were engaged throughout,” stated Erik Clark, Hauppauge Middle School counselor.

Sparking Creativity Internationally acclaimed author Todd Strasser visited Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District on January 20th to speak to students about his career as well as conduct writing workshops to help students polish their own writing skills. Mr. Strasser is the author of more than 140 novels, including popular middle school fiction titles such
as “The Diving Bell” and the “Help, I’m Trapped” series. He explained that successful writers show, not tell the story, a technique that helps the reader create pictures in their minds. “Writing is using all of your senses, not just what you see, to add more detail,” he said. Mr. Strasser also talked about the writing process, notably writing, rewriting and revising over and over

again. “Think about what you want to say before you start to write it,” he said. “Don’t worry about the first draft sounding perfect. Reread, edit and revise and keep trying until you succeed.” Mr. Strasser then engaged the students in writing workshops throughout the day, where they volunteered to read their stories to Mr. Strasser and their peers.
Nine students from Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District were medal winners in the annual PTA Reflections contest. Three entries received Suffolk County award

For more than a decade Bretton Woods Elementary School’s Community Service Club members have participated in various activities designed to make a difference in their community. Almost each week during the school year, Teachers and Co-Advisers Barbara Leventhal and Angela Carpinone accompany approximately 60 fourth and fifth grade students from Bretton Woods to The Arbors at Islandia East – an adult home in Islandia – to read, write and converse with the residents. The students are divided into small groups and spend about an hour with the same senior resident or group of residents. “Everlasting bonds are formed, and respect and appreciation between the groups flourish,” stated Leventhal. “Many times the relationship
And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to
say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-
way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs
of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

An Afternoon with Billy Joel Legendary musician and Long Island native, Billy Joel will speak with students at the Hillwood Recital Hall in Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post, on February 8th, 2016, for an “Afternoon of Questions & Answers…And a Little Music” to raise awareness of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School
for the Arts (LIHSA) and encourage enrollment. The students will come from both LIHSA, the only public high school arts program that serves students from across Long Island, and Long Island University. Other attendees will include superintendents and prospective students. Joel, a strong supporter
of the arts in public schools, wrote a letter in November 2015 to the Nassau BOCES Board expressing his support for LIHSA’s continuation. The Syosset-based arts program is funded by student tuition from public school districts. Enrollments have been declining for the last several years due to the
New York State property tax levy cap. Good teachers have made an impact on Joel. “I went to public school on Long Island and I am grateful for the music program and my music teachers for helping provide me the tools for which I have based my career,” Joel wrote in the letter. He hopes that
his support will bring awareness to the need for rigorous arts education options such as LIHSA. The afternoon promises to be freewheeling and fun-loving. Joel will be spinning yarns, playing music and offering snippets of advice to the aspiring musicians in the house. LIHSA instructors,

While it was consistently and heavily snowing last Saturday and many were cleaning up in the aftermath of snowstorm Jonas on Sunday, Southside Hospital cared for 13 women before, during and after they brought new lives into the world. To Southside, Saturday was just any other day; it just so happened to be snowing outside. But in order for patients not to notice any disruption in service or care during a near record snowstorm, it took a great deal of planning from the hospital’s administration and staff. Before the storm began, Northwell Health advised its staff to make the necessary provisions at their homes so that employees who would be working at the hospital during snowstorm Jonas could do so without worrying about their personal situations.

As weather forecasters were making it increasingly clear that this snowstorm would have a big impact on the Bay Shore area, Southside Hospital began planning and executing its emergency management plans which were created for natural disasters and have been utilized during occurrences such as Hurricane Sandy. Southside’s staff stocked up on extra supplies and food to make sure all would be properly cared for during the snowstorm. The hospital’s leadership began making provisions early in the week to ensure the necessary staff would be at the hospital to care for patients. This included creating an area for staff to sleep if they needed to stay over to make it to their scheduled shift or if they were unable to safely travel home on Saturday. Southside employees who slept at the hospital were
given a free breakfast. The employee cafeteria remained open all day Saturday and into Sunday to make sure people were well nourished. Southside, along with all of the hospitals in Northwell Health, regularly updated emergency first responders and other hospitals about their status throughout the snowstorm through an electronic emergency management system. Southside also kept in contact with neighboring hospitals, including Good Samaritan Hospital, to remain a resource in case they needed assistance.
