Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women.For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red

For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about the importance of taking care of your eyes. The risk for vision loss and related complications increases with age. Some type of sight-threatening eye problem affects 1 in 6 adults 45 and older and Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Protecting your eyesight is vital to maintaining your overall quality of life and preventing the onset of glaucoma. AgeWell New York encourages members to make their eyes a priority by following these few tips: Know your risk. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, nearsightedness, farsightedness, eye injury, or eye tumor, place you

in a high risk. Be aware of your family history and get yourself screened regularly. Early onset of cataracts or glaucoma can be hereditary and early detection is key. Regular eye exams. Adults 40- 65 should have their vision checked every one to two years; after 65, at least once a year. Comprehensive dilated eye exams detect problems early, when they’re easier to treat. An eye exam also ensures your eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription is up to date. Look for changes in your vision. Be cognoscente of noticeable changes such as double vision, hazy vision, difficulty seeing in low light conditions, red eyes, frequent flashes of light or eye pain and swelling. Speak with your doctor immediately about these changes. Exercise. According to the American Academy

of Ophthalmology, regular exercise - such as walking can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70%. Be cautious of heavy lifting or bending activities, especially if you have a chronic illness or disability. Protect your eyes from harmful UV light. Always wear sunglasses or a brimmed hat that shields your eyes from the sun. This may help reduce your risk of cataracts and other eye problems. Maintain a healthy diet. Studies have shown that antioxidants can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. Load up on fruits, vegetables and omega-3. Dark green, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids, which may defend against several medical conditions, including glaucoma. Speak with your doctor about

supplementing with eye vitamins to ensure you are getting adequate amounts of nutrients to keep your eyes healthy. As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Close to 250 students displayed inquiry-based research projects at Hauppauge School District’s Fourth Annual History Fair. Taking a Stand in History is the theme for the 2017 National History Day (NHD) Competition in which students participate on the Middle and High School levels. The projects presented included historical papers, individual and group exhibits, documentaries, websites and performances on a diverse variety of interesting topics. The top three projects recognized in each category will represent Hauppauge School District at the 2017 NHD Long Island Regional Competition (LHD) at Hofstra University on March 19th, 2017. From there, students who place in the top two or three of their categories will advance to April’s New York State History Day (NYSHD). Earning Badges

Members of Boy Scout Troop 343(Hauppauge) attended a merit badge session at the Commack branch of the Smithtown Library on January 21st. The session was led by Mr. Joe Costello, an 11th grade social studies teacher at Eximius College Preparatory Academy in the Bronx. Mr. Costello volunteered his time and the nine scouts in attendance were appreciative of his knowledge and experience. In order to earn a merit badge, a scout must fulfill all of the requirements of the badge. There are so many different merit badges and each one provides a Scout an opportunity to learn a lot of new things about a topic. The boys worked on earning three merit badges: Scholarship, American Heritage, and American Culture.

After Mr. Costello introduced himself, everyone got down to work. For the Scholarship badge, Mr. Costello taught the Scouts how to best use the library and all the different types of sources it contains, explained how to select the proper research material for a project and reviewed the pros and cons for using books, periodicals and the internet. For the American Heritage badge, Mr. Costello shared his vast knowledge of American History to teach the Scouts about the importance of the Declaration of Independence, and how the ideas expressed in it were unique for that time period. There were no other nations that recognized the idea that each person should be treated equally and had rights that could not be taken away. Finally, as part of the

session for the American Culture badge, Mr. Costello led a discussion about the different nations from which people have emigrated to live in America. The Scouts talked about the different ethnic groups, religions, cultures and traditions that make up American culture. Most interesting was the knowledge he shared about three different religions and the social customs of each, specifically: Christian religion and talked about the many different denominations, Judaism, Hinduism, and the religious practices of Ancient Egypt. Not only is Mr. Costello an excellent teacher, but he is also an excellent Boy Scout badge instructor for Troop 343. Due to his willingness to share his knowledge, the nine Scouts were able to earn these important badges.

Named a Finalist Smithtown High School East senior Emily Anne Peterson has been named a finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search program. Peterson is one of 40 student finalists invited to Washington, D.C., in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for awards, including the top award of $250,000. She is one of just three finalists on Long Island. “This is a well-deserved honor for Emily Peterson and we couldn’t be more proud of this amazing accomplishment,” said Smithtown High School East Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons. “Emily’s quiet and unassuming demeanor masks the brilliance of a seasoned researcher that is

well beyond her years. Her success has been realized due to her steadfast approach, insatiable work ethic, and her unparalleled inquisitiveness.” Peterson’s project is “Lecithin-Retinol Acyltransferase in Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The Relationship Between Oncology and Wound Repair.” Squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, is lacking in the expression of LecithinRetinol Acyltransferase (LRAT), a protein involved in both wound healing and cancer. She explored the role of LRAT in both wound healing and cancer progression by completing tissue culture, skin sheet formation, and analysis of the regulation of the genes involved with invasion, intercellular cohesion and

coagulation. Additionally, she explored the genetic sequence homologies of LRAT to other proteins of interest utilizing computer coding. Peterson worked with Dr. Marcia Simon at Stony Brook University. Under the direction of Smithtown High School East research coordinator Maria Zeitlin, Peterson submitted her research for recognition. “I am so proud that Emily has been selected as a Regeneron finalist,” Zeitlin said. “She has an intuitive sense for scientific investigation and a tremendous work ethic. Her selection does not surprise me as she has demonstrated keen insight into the mechanisms of wound repair and skin cancer cell mechanics.”

Following the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Kick Off Event that was held at Stony Brook University on Saturday, January 7th, the FIRST Long Island build season is officially underway. Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), the event hosted students, mentors and parents from 48 FIRST Long Island teams, who gathered in anticipation of learning the official rules for FIRST STEAMWORKSSM. Described by FIRST as a competition that “invites two adventurers’ clubs, in an era where steam power reigns, to

Spreading Kindness As an example of the Smithtown Central School District’s focus on social-emotional learning, fourth-grade students in Mary Kate Snak’s class at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School recently worked together to create a kindness board.

In forming a positive classroom environment, the students talked about how kindness always wins. They also learned words can hurt, so you should always choose them wisely. The students were asked to write kind words about each of their classmates.

The kind words are now on display on a bulletin board in hopes of spreading kindness to others. Students learned how they were viewed among their peers. The kind words helped build self-esteem and a sense of community in the classroom.

DECA Honors More than 70 DECA students from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West either placed or received honorable mention at the Suffolk County Regional DECA Competition at Suffolk County Community College on January 4th. More than 2,000 DECA students from high schools in Suffolk County participated in the competition. Awards were presented to students for categories including accounting, apparel and accessories marketing, automotive services marketing, business management and

administration, business law and ethics, business services marketing, financial services, food marketing, hospitality, hotel and lodging management, human resources, marketing communications, marketing management, personal finance, public speaking, quick serve restaurant management, and sports and entertainment marketing. These students now qualify for the state competition in March in Rochester, New York. Additionally, approximately 35 Smithtown Central School District students are completing their

manuals for the state level competition. The manuals can range from 10 to 30 pages on various business/marketing areas. Students who place in the performance and written events in Rochester will qualify to compete at the International DECA Competition in Anaheim, California, in April. DECA is a co-curricular global program that provides students with experiences and activities in areas such as marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Participation also hones leadership skills, civic consciousness and social intelligence in participants.

Nature Visit First-grade students at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently had the opportunity to visit with some unique animal species.

Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown visited the first-grade classes and conducted “animal interviews.” Students were able to interact with all the different animals while

learning fun facts. Some of the animals that visited the school included a hedgehog, chinchilla, turtle, snake, owl and walking stick.
